    Renewing Registration For A Domain

When you register a domain with Amazon Route 53 or you transfer domain registration to Route 53, we configure the domain to renew automatically. The automatic renewal period is typically one year, although the registries for some top-level domains have longer renewal periods. For the registration and renewal period for your TLD, see .

You can’t use AWS credits to pay the fee for renewing registration for a domain.

For most top-level domains , you can change the expiration date for a domain. For more information, see Extending the registration period for a domain.

If you turn off automatic renewal, be aware of the following effects on your domain:

    • Some TLD registries delete domains even before the expiration date if you don’t renew early enough. We strongly recommend that you leave automatic renewal enabled if you want to keep a domain name.

    • We also strongly recommend that you don’t plan to re-register a domain after it has expired. Some registrars allow others to register domains immediately after the domains expire, so you might not be able to re-register before the domain is taken by someone else.

    • Some registries charge a large premium to restore expired domains.

    • On or near the expiration date, the domain becomes unavailable on the internet.

To determine whether automatic renewal is enabled for your domain, see Enabling or disabling automatic renewal for a domain.

If automatic renewal is enabled, here’s what happens:

What If I Forget To Renew My Domain Name?

When a domain registration expires, your options for renewal vary based on when your domain expired. On Aug. 31, 2013, ICANN adopted the Expired Registration Recovery Policy , which requires registrars to disclose important information to Registrants and prospective customers about expiration notices, fees and redemption procedures. The 5 Step Process To Transfer A Domain

    1. Know Where to it needs to be Transferred to

Something you have to know before you go any further is where you are going to be transferring the domain to. If you use ITX Design to purchase your domain or to have it transferred to it will only cost you around $7 to make this happen. When you transfer a domain name with ITX Design you also get a full year of registration as well.

    2. Log in to your Account

If you are using ITX Design you can log in to your account and go to the section that is called Domains. This will have a section that is called Transfer Domains to ITX Design and this is where you will follow the instructions to help you do exactly that. If you are using a different registrar it should be very similar and you will find the Transfer a Domain section in the Domain Management section.

    3. Choose the Domain and Pay

Now all you have to do is type the domain name into the box and select to go forward with the transaction. If the domain name you have typed in is available to be transferred you will be able to proceed to the checkout area, pay for your transfer, and you will get the codes you need to have your transfer completed.

    4. Enter the Transfer Codes

Top Tips To Use When You Need To Renew Your Domain Names

    1. Find a Coupon

Sometimes when you renew your domain names you can find a coupon code and you will be able to save some money when you renew your domain names. This means that you can save a percentage or sometimes it is a flat renewal fee coupon code that you can use. When you can save money like this you may want to renew your domains for more than just one year.

Make sure you know when your domains are coming up for renewal and you look for coupon codes that will work for you when they come up for renewal. When you get your 90 day notice telling you that you need to renew it is time to start looking for coupons. You can use the 90 days you have to find the right coupon for you and save money on your domain renewals.

    2. Renew On Time

If you wait too long to renew your domain names you will end up having to pay more money to get them back. This can get very expensive and you really have to know that when you do this you will not be able to use a coupon code and you will end up paying nearly twice as much to renew your domains. This is not a good way to go about getting your domains.

Plus when you wait too long others have the chance to purchase your domains as well. If this happens you cannot get them back until their registration period is up. You will also have to count on them not renewing them and this means that you pretty much have lost the domain you have worked so hard to establish.

    3. Renew for More than 1 Year

    Expiration Timeline

The day before the expiration: Before the registration expires, the registrar will typically send you a handful of alerts, notifying you that the registration is nearing expiration. You can renew the domain or set the domain up for auto-renew.

Expiration date: If you do not renew the domain by the expiration date, the name will enter a renewal grace period. You can renew the domain or set the domain up for auto-renew.

Day 1 after expiration: The domain will be deactivated and “parked,” indicating that its registration has expired. Other services associated with the domain, such as email, may cease to function. You can renew the domain or set the domain up for auto-renew.

Day 40 after expiration: Auctions will end. If the auctions end with no bidders, the domain will be returned to the registry. During this time , you can pay a redemption fee in addition to the renewal fee to restore the registration.

Day 42 after expiration: If the registry grace period ends, the domain will be returned to the registry with no option for the domain or website to be recovered by the owner. Your last option would be to register the domain again through general registration. More than likely, if the domain was developed or had any sort of value, it would have probably sold in an auction. Obviously, any services it once had associated with it would be gone.

What Happens If I Forget To Renew My Domain Name And It Expires

If you have forgotten to renewyour domain name and it expires – don’t panic, you will still be able torenew it as long as you act quickly.

After the registration of a .com.au, .net.au, .org.au or any other .auextension lapses, the domain name becomes inactive and enters into what is knownas “serverUpdateProhibited” and “serverHold” status for 30days, during which time the website address can still be renewed. However, after this period, an Australiandomain name with this status is deleted from the .au registrar on the next business day and canthen be registered by any eligible party – who could perhaps be a competitor orsomeone with an axe to grind.

The expiration process can be a little more complex for other web addresses.

For example, when a website address ending in .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz expires, it firstgoes into the Domain Name Grace Period , which lasts for approximately 40days during which time you are able to renew the domain by simply paying therenewal fees.

After this period, the name then enters a further 30 day Domain NameRedemption Period . The domain can still be retrieved by the originalregistrant, but it is a costly and complex process taking a few days. If the web address is still not renewed after the DNRP, there is then a 5-day Pending DeletePhase after which time, the domain name will be available for registration byany other eligible party.
