In HTTP, redirections are usually triggered by the server sending a redirect response to a request. These are specific responses that take you to the correct address when you click on a sites link.

Redirect responses have status codes that usually start with three and have a location header that holds the URL to redirect to. When the browser receives a redirect, the new URL provided in the Location header loads.

We feel that its once again worth mentioning that these processes might affect your SEO ranking and credibility. Therefore, we recommend paying close attention to this guide and instructions before trying to reap the benefits of website redirects.

How To Redirect Http To Https How To Force Https

How to Redirect HTTP to HTTPS, Learn about SSL and how to force the secure version of the hypertext transfer protocol, a.k.a., HTTPS.

If a website doesn’t have an SSL certificate, then Firefox and Google Chrome shows “insecure warnings” when visitors load that website. SSL encrypted connection is necessary for the accessibility and safety of visitors to your website.

It is also essential to redirect HTTP to HTTPS. Still, there is a way for forcing a website to load it into HTTPS rather than HTTP by editing the .htaccess file. So this particular article will give detailed information on “how to force HTTPS” with step by step procedure.

How To Force Https On The Particular Folder

You can use a .htaccess file to force HTTPS on a particular folder but make sure to place this file into a folder having an HTTPS connection. So use the following command to force HTTPS on the particular folder:

RewriteEngine On

RewriteCond % off

RewriteRule ^ https://%%

Ensure that you change a folder reference to the name of the actual directory. Once you make the changes, clear the cache of your web browser and connect to your website through HTTPS, and it will redirect you to HTTPS.

Locate Your Site’s Htaccess File

To access your sites .htaccess file, youll need to be able to connect to your sites server via FTP or a tool like cPanel File Manager.

Once youve done that, you should find your .htaccess file in your sites root folder, which is the same folder that contains the wp-admin and wp-content folders.

Some WordPress SEO plugins also offer in-dashboard .htaccess editors. For example, if youre using Yoast SEO, you can go to SEO Tools File Editor to edit your .htaccess file.

URL redirects are useful because web hosts use different technologies and codebases. Then open up and edit the two conf files for the new www domain.sudo nano www.my-domain.com.confRemove everything inside of the first location { section and replace it withreturn 301 https://my-canonical-domain.com$request_uri Keep the .well-known location block – this is used for renewing certificates.

How To Create A Url Redirect In WordPress Using Htaccess

If your web host uses the Apache web server , you can set up redirects by editing your sites .htaccess file.

Note some managed WordPress hosts use the Nginx web server, which doesnt support .htaccess files. If you cant find your sites .htaccess file, you might want to reach out to your hosts support to ask them how to proceed. Some Nginx-based hosts have built their own redirect tools.

Assuming your host does have .htaccess files, heres how to do it:

Create A Url Redirect Using A WordPress Plugin

The easiest way to create a URL redirect on WordPress is by using the Redirection plugin.

As WordPress is generally used for the management of a single website , the plugin method is the best way to create a URL redirect between different pages that belong to the same domain.

Once youve installed the Redirection plugin from your WP admin dashboard, heres how you can create 301 redirects on your website for content that was moved or renamed.

  • From the admin dashboard, select Tools > Redirection.
  • Type in the URL of the old page in the word box titled Then, type in the URL of the new page, or page you want the other site to be redirected to in the Target URL box.
  • Once youve double checked the URLs to ensure theyre correct, click on Add Redirect. And youre done!
  • Why Delay A Redirect In Html

How to redirect your Domain Name.

If youre not sure why you should delay your HTML meta redirect, think about a chance to set a message for the user. You could inform them the page has moved, and then promptly send them to the new one.

Another important reason is the slight chance of the tag not being rendered correctly. This might happen if the user is using some ancient browser. In this case, you may add a direct link to the old page which the user might click manually if the HTML redirect code fails.

    Example

    < head> < metahttp-equiv="refresh"content="5 URL=https://www.bitdegree.org/" /> < /head> < body> < p> If you are not redirected in five seconds, < ahref="https://www.bitdegree.org/"> click here< /a> .< /p> < /body>

As you can see, all you need to add a direct clickable link is a pair of anchor tags. Make sure to place it in the < body> section and not the < head> with the HTML meta redirect tag: there is no use for a clickable link that a user cannot see in the first place.

The Problem Explained In Greater Detail

Having your site referred to as both example.com and www.example.com is not a problem ofconsistency. Neither is it an issue that affects branding, since most humans looking at those twonames will automatically assume they are referring to the same thing. In fact, most humans, when told to go to a domainlike “thesitewizard.com” will automatically type “www.thesitewizard.com” in their browsers, since this is the waythe majority of the websites on the Internet work, and they know it. So the problem isn’t really with human beings at all.

It is a problem with search engines.

When you have two different addresses pointing to the same page, like www.example.com/offers.html andexample.com/offers.html, many search engines will treat those two URLs as two separate pages. When you, as a human, see those two pages and notice they are identical, you will automatically realise that they are actually the same page. Apparently, the search engines do not make this assumption, and will regard those asdifferent pages with duplicate content.

The problem with duplicatecontent is a topic I have written on before, so I will not repeat myself here. You can learn more about it from myarticle How to Createa Search Engine Friendly Website.

Customize A Url Redirect’s Advanced Options

For more control over your redirect’s behavior, click More options while creating or editing a URL redirect.

    • Redirect style: sets the conditions under which the URL will redirect.
    • Permanent : redirect one page URL to another URL. This is the default selection for new redirects.
    • Temporary : temporarily redirect one page to another URL. This type of redirect is often used to temporarily redirect traffic for website maintenance or a website redesign.
    • Proxy: redirect the content of your live page without changing the URL displayed on the visitor’s web browser. This type of redirect is often used to share a file that’s hosted on a specific directory outside your main site.
  • Priority: by default, new redirects are assigned the lowest priority. To customize this setting, clear the Assign lowest priority checkbox and enter a custom value.
  • If more than one redirect exists for the original URL, the redirect with the lowest priority will be applied. For example, if there are two URL redirects that apply to a URL – one with a priority of 100 and the other with a priority of 1 – the redirect with a priority of 1 would be applied.
  • When you have edited your redirect’s advanced options, click Update URL redirect to apply your changes.

    Moving To A Different Domain

If you have established a web presence and would like to change your domain, it is best not to just abandon your old domain.

Bookmarks to your site and links to your site located on other pages throughout the internet will break if your content disappears without any instructions to the browser about how to find its new location.

Changing domains without redirecting will cause your site to lose traffic from previous visitors and lose all of the credibility you have worked to establish.

Make A Backup Of Your Htaccess File

Redirects can be tricky and one small mistake can result in some or all of your site becoming inaccessible. For that reason, its essential that you back up your existing .htaccess file before making any changes. You can do this by downloading it to your local computer.

That way, if something goes wrong, all you need to do is re-upload your backup copy and your site will instantly go back to normal.

This type of domain redirection is best used for cases when you want to redirect an entire website to a new domain and your domain registration company doesnt offer free redirection.

Keep in mind that different hosts use different panels and user interfaces, so the steps may slightly change on a case-by-case basis. However, generally speaking, the process of redirecting a domain through your web host goes as follows:

    • Login to your web hosting accounts cPanel
    • In the Domains section of the cPanel home screen, click Redirects.
    • Under Add Redirect, select the redirection type: Permanent 301 or Temporary 302. This instruction helps search engines like Google and Bing understand how to treat this redirect.
    • Select the domain, and then type the web page that you want to redirect.
    • In the redirects to text box, type the destination web page.
    • Click the Add button

Now, whenever a visitor goes to your websites old domain, theyll directly be redirected to the new domain!
