WordPress is quick and easy to set up. It’ll allow us to get a good looking website in seconds, that’s highly functional and will be able to do all of what we need.

Under that section you’ll see a button called WordPress, so go ahead and click that. Click New Installation on the next screen, and follow the instructions on the two screens after that. And that’s it, within a minute or so you’ll have your new website up and running.

Make sure you save the details you add as the username and password for your WordPress install. Once done, you will be able to log into your website by adding /wp-admin to the end of you site. So for example, you’d type This will bring you to your WordPress dashboard, and allow you to edit your site.

You can now visit your website in a new window and you should see your site coming together. If it’s not there yet, give it a few minutes to process and try again.

Music Domains May Finally Be A Reality

For bands and artists, the process of registering a domain name has long been a frustrating one, with many of the relevant .com names having already been scooped up by early adopters. That could soon change, however, after the company DotMusic finally won out in a battle to register .music domains.

If youve ever tried to register a domain you know that it can be a frustrating experience. Unless you grabbed your preferred name back way when websites were just taking off, chances are that the name you want is already taken. That leaves you to either using a modified domain name or an undesirable domain extension like .org or .pro. This could soon change for musicians as it looks like .music domains could soon become a reality.

In 2019 a company called DotMusic actually won a battle with heavyweights like Amazon and Google for the rights to register .music domains. Since then the company is gearing up for the official release, which was for 2020 until the pandemic got in the way.

If things go as planned, having a .music domain will be more beneficial than almost any other extension. This is because DotMusic promises to vet all registry applications to eliminate cybersquatting, or people registering a domain and holding it to sell at a later date. If someone takes a .music name but isnt actually in the music business, they can lose the domain to a proven legitimate entity.

Register A Domain Name

As early on as possible in your bands career, register a domain name for future use. Even if you havent begun playing shows or recording music yet, registering it future proofs you and ensures it wont be taken by someone else.

If you havent chosen a name for your act yet, the domain names availability can be a contributing factor to the decision process. This is because you want your domain name to be as memorable and straightforward as possible.

If isnt available, try adding something like band, music or official onto the end. For example, it may end up being While this isnt as ideal as only using your name, its still memorable and self-explanatory.

Keep in mind that your domain name is best if it matches or comes close to your social media handles. This way fans only have to remember one thing when theyre trying to find you online.

Although there are other options out there other then .com, its still the best way to go. If someone forgets the suffix to your domain name, theyre going to automatically assume its .com and the last thing you want is for them to end up on the wrong site.

If youve registered a domain name but arent planning to create a music website anytime soon, you can still redirect it to another place online. This could be your social media accounts, a music streaming profile or a coming soon page with an email sign up.

There Could Be Complications With Ranking Non Standard Domain Names

The early days of the web were considered the Wild West of the internet. And to some extent, were still living out those Wild West days. But the internet is a far more competitive place today than it used to be.

When the term blog was beginning to come into common use in 1999, publishing and sharing content was kind of a big deal. Ranking in search engines was easy, and tended to happen more or less instantaneously. People would actually comment on each others posts too. Imagine!

Today, you can run a search for just about any niche and find a site that covers it in detail. If you want to become a publisher, you can, because there are very few barriers to entry.

This is fantastic news if youve dreamed of setting up a blog and covering a topic youre passionate about. This is bad news if youre worried about being overshadowed by your competition.

But more to the point, were still not sure how search engines are going to treat domains with weird extensions. They may not see them as quite as authoritative and legitimate as .com sites, which means that even if you have really great content, someone else could come out on top simply because they’ve invested in a .com domain name.

This is yet another reason it wouldnt be advisable to use a .band or .rock domain as your home base on the web.

Public Domain Vs Creative Commons Zero License

Think of this type of license as a sister to Public Domain music. This license involves the author renouncing his or her rights to make the track available to the public without requiring credit. This is rare, as nowadays, musical works are usually monetized or at least credited. However, this type of Creative Commons license proposes a total renunciation of all that. Sounds the same as Public Domain music, right? Total freedom?

However, the differences are:

  • In the Public Domain, a work becomes available for public use at least 70 years after the death of its author
  • In the Creative Commons Zero license, the author is the one to decide to release his work from the moment of its creation

Dozens Of Music Companies File Copyright Suit Against Charter Communications

When applications were first submitted to ICANN in 2012, DotMusic Limited wasn’t seen as a likely victor in the .music fight. It quickly became an eight-way contest, with behemoths like Google and Amazon competing alongside established domain name registries including Radix and Donuts. But perhaps the fiercest competitor early on was Far Further, an organization staffed by such music industry vets as Loren Balman, John Styll and Keith Thomas. That company initially became the clear front-runner, racking up a heavyweight list of backers including the RIAA, the IFPI and the Recording Academy. Emboldened, Far Further ultimately filed for “community” status, a designation that, if granted, gives the organization in question preferential treatment with ICANN.

But when Far Further failed to meet the “community” threshold, the RIAA, IFPI and others switched their allegiance to DotMusic, which already boasted a broader coalition of independent companies, like CD Baby and Reverb Nation, as well as government-related arts organizations, including IFACCA .

Adding Plugins To Make Your Site Do More

While WordPress is a powerful website platform by it’s self, it also allows you to update the amount of things you can do with it using plugins’. Plugins are things you can easily install on your website and add new features. Features you can add include a comments form, social sharing buttons, media players, picture galleries, broken link checkers, and pretty much any other feature you could reasonably want from a website.

I’ll recommend some plugins to get you started, but first here is how to search for them and install them.

On your WordPress Dashboard, hover over Plugins on the left hand side menu, then click on Add New. You can then search the plugin you want, and on the next screen choose Install Now on your chosen plugin . If you’re not sure if you want it yet, you can first click the Details button for more information on what it’ll allow your site to do, and only install it when you know it’s what you want. It’ll ask you if you’re sure you want to install the plugin, and just click OK.

On the next screen it’ll tell you your plugin’s installed after a few seconds, and you simply click the link to activate the plugin. And that’s it, the plugin is now installed.

Some plugins require you to edit their settings to your own personal preference , while others will work straight away without you doing anything more.

As promised, here are some cool plugins you should install to get you started and used to the process. Simply search the plugin in the way mentioned above.

Link To Your Web Presence

Shall We Gather at the River?: WORDS and MUSIC: âHanson ...

Your website should serve as a home base for your entire web presence. So, be sure to include a link to all of your social media profiles, major streaming services, YouTube channels and anywhere else people can find you online.

Doing this and including a link to your website on all your online profiles makes it easy for new fans to quickly find and follow you everywhere.

Consider embedding Share buttons on each major page of your website as well. These make it easy for visitors to post content they enjoy on their own social media profiles, spreading the word about your music to their friends.

Finally, if you dont update your site too often, you may want to try embedding a feed of your recent social media posts into your website. This shows new visitors what youve been up to and also prevents the content on your site from getting static.
