    How To Use A Third

If you already have a domain from a 3rd party provider such as Bluehost or Godaddy, you can use it for your Shopify online store so customers or visitors will end up on your website when they type your domain into their browsers. You can employ your 3rd party domain for your Shopify store by connecting it to Shopify or transferring it to Shopify:

    • Transferring your domain to Shopify – Transferring your domain might be the first way to think about when it comes to pointing your custom domain at Shopify stores. Almost all domains can easily be transferred to Shopify. When you transfer a domain, management of the domain moves to Shopify, which means you adjust your domain settings, pay for the domain and renew your domain right in your Shopify admin panel.

    • Connecting your domains to Shopify – Integrating your 3rd party domain to Shopify points your domain name at your Shopify store. You still employ the 3rd party domain provider to have control over your domain settings, pay for your domain and renew it.

Anyway, Shopify comes with a very easy-to-use DIY platform to help you make changes to the store name into a new Shopify store name address. Once you pay for a new domain, you need to add it to your Shopify web store. Please follow our given instructions below to add a new domain as you expect.

    How To Transfer A Domain

When a domain is transferred, management of that domain moves to Shopify, which means you adjust your domain settings, pay for that domain and renew your domain right in your Shopify Admin panel. Shopify does not come with email accounts as part of its domain services. However, it does include unrestricted email forwarding accounts for your domain name.

To transfer a domain to Shopify, first, you need to have signed up your domain more than 60 previous days and have access to your original domain provider account. Please kindly note that to transfer your domain, you will need to keep an eye on and respond to important confirmation emails. Then, it takes you no more than 20 days from the time of initiation until the transfer gets completed.

Also, note that you have to pay for your domain annually to have it in use. For instance, if you have 3 months left until your domains expiration and then you transfer your domain to Shopify and add 12 more months of registration, you will not have to renew your domain for 15 months.

    Get Your Redirects Ready

After you get your store built, its time to build your redirects.

There are two major reasons to build a list of redirects when transferring your store to Shopify:

  • It will ensure that any customer using an old URL ends up on the correct page of your new site after the switch, so you dont lose any revenue from people landing on dead pages.
  • Itll transfer any page authority that youve built for Google searches to the new URLs, helping your new store rank for search results and keep your traffic from dropping after the switch.
  • Luckily, Shopify has an easy way to add redirects to your new store. All the redirects will go live when you launch your new store.

You can add redirects within Shopify by going to Online Store > Navigation > URL Redirects. Theres also an option to import them as a batch.

Youll want to create a redirect for every URL that has a different location in Shopify. For example, products in Shopify have a URL like this: company.com/products/product-name

If your old product URLs use a different URL structure, youll want to create a redirect for each product. Same for any other pages that have a different location in Shopify.

Check the URL path of every page and product that you create in your new Shopify store. If theyre the same as your old store, theres nothing you need to do. If they have a new URL path, create a redirect for them.

    Ensure Correct Search Console Settings

Verify you own both the old and destination sites in Search Console. You can do this through a variety of ways but our preference is you verify through your domain provider by updating the DNS record. Its really simple. All you do is add a TXT record with the Google Search Console verification code.

If you changed any of the configuration settings in Search Console for your old site, make sure the new sites setting have the same configurations as well.

    • URL parameters: If you configured URL parameters on your old domain to control the indexing of the site, you should apply these to the new site.
    • Crawl rate: You shouldnt configured this. Its not recommended by Google.
    • Disavowed backlinks: If you uploaded any to your old site, you should re-upload them again using the new Search Console account. That being said, Google has come out and stated that they now view MOST bad back-links as something they just ignore and dont penalize sites for them, but we still recommend doing it. Better to be safe than sorry.
