Evaluate Long Term Costs
In addition to the upfront costs of getting a domain name, consider costs like taxes and renewal fees. Some registrars charge increased renewal fees when your domain registration expires, and depending on where you live, your domain name may be subject to state and local taxes.
Remember to budget for your domain name alongside other potential startup costs, like website hosting or creating a logo for your business.
Squarespace Domain Vs Godaddy
If youre trying to decide between Squarespace and GoDaddy for your web domain needs, there are a few things to consider. First, Squarespace has limited domain management features compared to GoDaddy. Additionally, GoDaddy offers a wider variety of top-level domains than Squarespace.
The annual price for a .com address at Squarespace is $20, while GoDaddy charges $14.99 per year for the same thing. So if price is your primary concern, GoDaddy may be the better option.

However, a nice little bonus is the parked page. You can use it to let visitors know your website is still under construction, and Squarespace gives you control over how it looks.

None of these topics require a developer or deep technical knowledge, but they are topics that you need to be aware of.
Going back to the house analogy its like changing the air filter monthly and setting a security system. They arent complicated, but they are your responsibility. My post on essential plugins for WordPress is a good resource.

Customer Support & Service
No matter who you are or what youre building youll likely need customer support.
WordPress.com approaches customer support differently. They do everything to make customer support scale .
WordPress.com structures their backend to try to eliminate questions & problems. But if you do have an issue, you have to post it in a public forum.
The contact form automatically searches old posts as you type to get your question answered from an old post. When you submit, WordPress.coms Happiness Engineers quickly and concisely answer your question either publicly or via private email.
Its all virtual, interesting, and efficient but not necessarily for everyone.
Squarespace offers more traditional customer support via support tickets. They do not do phone support but do offer 24/7 support via email, chat and Twitter.
When you have a self-hosted WordPress website, you go to your hosting company for technical issues and Google/forums for other issues. Ive reviewed a bunch of hosting companies and service levels/approaches vary wildly.
Some companies like InMotion , Web Hosting Hub , SiteGround , and DreamHost are independent companies that actively invest in customer service and will help with more WordPress-specific issues than others.
Should I Build My Website On Squarespace
Platform, Market Share
- Bitrix, 1.0%
Sure, Squarespace websites can look clean and pretty, but you need more than that to survive in todays competitive online world.
Well dive into all the reasons we think Squarespace is all too often a lousy idea. These arent just based on our opinions, mind you. Theyre based on our personal experience with the platform versus other content management systems.
And we promise that a whole bunch of other web designers and marketers feel the same way we do .
Start The Transfer Process
In your Square Online Overview page, go to Website> Domains.
Select Connect domain.
Under Use a domain I own elsewhere, type in the domain name you want to transfer and select Verify.
Select transfer your domain and follow the step-by-step instructions.
Note: At this time, we can only accept .com,.net, and .org domains for transfer.

Register Your Domain Name
Once you find the domain you want, youll need to buy it so it cant be claimed by anyone else. When you register your domain, look for a registrar that ensures WHOIS privacy. WHOIS is an Internet record that publicly lists information about domains including the contact information of the domain owner which can be crawled by spam marketers for email addresses. When a registrar offers WHOIS privacy, or domain privacy, it means that your contact information will not be publicly listed.
Some domain registrars charge an additional fee for domain privacy, and some offer it as a built-in part of domain registration. WHOIS privacy is included with most Squarespace domain registrations.

Should I Transfer A Domain From Bluehost To Squarespace
If you dont plan on using Bluehost anymore, its a good idea to transfer your domain to Squarespace. However, if youre still using Bluehost and plan to continue using it, theres no need to transfer your domain since you can keep it with Bluehost and point the domains DNS records to Squarespaces servers.
How To Connect A Squarespace Site To A Third
Squarespace allows you to register a domain with them directly, but you dont have to. Many people register domain names with other registrars before they even set up a website, and many others have websites hosted on other services and want to transfer to Squarespace. There are a handful of reasons for this – sometimes the registrar has better features or privacy, sometimes its for consolidation purposes, or sometimes its simply because its an old domain that theyve had for a while.
Luckily, its relatively easy to connect your domain to your Squarespace account.
The first thing to know is the difference between transferring a domain and connecting a domain.
Transferring a domain means taking it out of the control of the registrar and putting it in the hands of Squarespace. This gives you the benefits of having a domain through Squarespace, such as WHOIS protection, centralized billing, and free SSL.
On the other hand, Squarespace has some restrictions on what domains they will host. They also will not transfer domains with registry premium, do not accept most country-code TLDs , and cant have your domain registered for less than 60 days. This isnt exactly a Squarespace-specific restriction, though – most major registrars have this restriction in place, and it is up to the individual registrars.
Today, Im talking specifically about connecting a domain from a third-party registrar to your Squarespace-hosted site.
