Find computer name
Computer names are easy identifiers, whereas giving randomized characters can be difficult to remember. Take your car license plate for an example, it could be some arbitrary like YH2D-P9N. I wont remember that but, having an office computer and a home work station named James-Work and James-Home is much easier to remember.
The computer name is also known as the HOSTNAME in terms of SOLIDWORKS Licensing. Your IT, or software tech like a Javelin Tech, may ask you for your computer name to ensure they have the correct computer.
So how do you find your computer name in Windows? Follow these steps for Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10.
Structure Of The Fqdn
If you want to better understand the naming hierarchy of the FQDN, then it makes sense to look at the structure of an FQDN from right to left. The further right a label is located, the higher it lies in the tree diagram representation of the hierarchy. On the highest hierarchical level youll find the root label, also called the null label, or the root of the DNS system. It consists of a blank area, and so is only expressed by a period, or dot. In browsers today, its not necessary to enter this dot anymore, since the browser will add it itself.
On the next highest hierarchy level is the top level domain, for example .com, .org, or .ca. To resolve the address, the name server searches through the directory of the given TLD for the domain on the next hierarchy level. Once this is identified, the host whose host name is listed in the lowest label is contacted to access the given site.

How Do You Know If Your Computer Is On A Domain
If you have a home computer, it’s very unlikely you’re on a domain. You could create a domain on your home network, but there’s not much use to doing so. But if you use a computer supplied by your work or school, it’s almost certainly on a domain.
To check if your computer is part of a domain, open the Control Panel and click the System entry. Look under the Computer name section. If you see a Workgroup entry with WORKGROUP or another name listed, your computer is not on a domain. Likewise, if you see Domain here, then your computer is on a domain.
These steps also allow you to find your domain name on your computer.
Using Powershell To Leave Domains
You can also leave a Windows domain using PowerShell, a free scripting tool from Microsoft. This can be useful if you want to automate entering and exiting domains.
Use the Remove-Computer command in PowerShell to remove a computer from a domain. You can provide a variety of parameters, including the name of a work group to move the computer to, and you must provide the username of a user allowed to remove the computer from the domain using the parameter “UnjoinDomaincredential.” By default, the computer will be joined to a work group simply called “WORKGROUP.” You may be prompted to enter the authorized user’s password.
You may need to restart your computer for changes to take effect. If you want to do so as part of the PowerShell command, use the parameter “-Restart.”
Use the PowerShell command Add-Computer to add your computer to a new domain.
