The Origin Of Co Vs Com Domain Extensions

How To Choose A Good Domain Name For Your Website! (Tutorial)

The first .com was claimed on March 15, 1985 . The site, symbolics.com, is still in existence although it has changed dramatically to recognize its place in Internet history. That makes the use of .com extensions over 35 years old and counting.

Which makes .com even older than the publicly open Internet, which points to 1991 as the big year it came out. Since .gov and .edu were for specific organizations, .com emerged relatively quickly as one of the standard domain extensions people focused on.

In retrospect its easy to see why .com became the standard. As the Internet was growing publicly in the mid-1990s there were only seven TLDs . The only TLDs open to anyone from those seven were .com, .org, and .net.

Since most people werent organizations or networks, .com became the default that everyone goes by even today.

The origin of .co comes from 2010, and its not what most people think it is. Many people assume .co means company or corporation. That is how it is widely used/viewed online, but it actually stands for Colombia.

When the national TLD extensions were rolled out, Colombias was .co. This was similar to .com and since .co could easily be branded as company or corporation, when Colombia made it an open TLD it rose very quickly in popularity.

The data from studies of VC-backed startups domain preferences confirms that .co remains one of the most popular alternatives to .com when the ideal name is not available in .com form.

What Does Co Stand For In Domain Names

The .CO domain is already meaningful and recognizable in many languages and cultures. Itâs short for companionship. For most people, 1 means two letters â CO â companies and/or companies around the world. Look around you and someone close to you is already using the letters CO in this context. Used in country code domain extensions.

Why Are Io Domains Expensive

Have you been paying attention at the back? If so, youll already know that they are popular with technology companies and this could be one of the reasons that .io domains are expensive.

Much like the saying beauty is in the eye of the beholder, a valuable domain is often decided on demand, popularity, and marketability. Not all buyers will agree on its perceived worth.

When looking at an expensive TLD like a .io, consider:

  • Is this extension worth the money?
  • Will my website visitors benefit from this TLD?
  • Can I afford the cost?

What Is A Domain Name Domains Explained For Beginners

Is .co A Good Domain? (Yes and No

A domain name is a web address consisting of a website name and a domain name extension. The name is up to you as long as it consists of letters, numbers, hyphens and is still available, whereas the domain extension is usually a set combination of a few letters.

Just like a physical address helps people find a specific place, the purpose of a domain is to help visitors find a website. Without domain names, users can only access websites using Internet Protocol addresses.

However, IP addresses are hard to remember as they consist of seemingly random series of numbers, making them inconvenient to share. Domain names, on the contrary, can help drive traffic to your website.

In this article, we will cover all the necessary information about domain names. We will explain how domains work and their different types. Then, we will show how to register and transfer a domain name and answer some frequently asked questions.

The Growing Popularity Brings More Users To Those Domains Which Grow Trust Further

What is often referred to as a feedback loop is currently happening with alternative TLDs. More companies see .io and .co as viable alternatives, which leads to more users interacting with them. Growing the trust further, which again leads to more companies using them. Effecting the TLD .co to grow +79% from 212.000 registered domains in 2018 to 379.000 in 2020. A trend we dont think will stop any time soon.

Co Vs Com: Advantages Co

The .co domain name extension is a fresh extension being used by many up and coming startups. Its better with a more tech-savvy crowd because trends are moving away from the classic .com extension.

And no wonder. With just under two million users, its a lot easier to snag your desired domain name with that extension than it is with .com. If you dont want to be saddled with trying a variant of your business name just to snag .com, using .co vs .com can save you a massive headache to make the switch.

The .co is less bloated as well. With proper SEO, you can still rank really high in google searches. Theres a good chance your domain name is dormant over at .com, so switching to .co vs .com SEO allows you to have your desired username and with no competition.

Org Vs Com At A Glance Comparison

What Is a Domain Name | Domain Names Explained

Both .org and .com are top-level domains , or the extensions appearing after the final dot in a URL. Other common TLDs are .net and .edu. All these will give your URL a professional appearance. However, due to their popularity, you may not get the exact URL you want to register for.

Pro tip: Check if you can get a free domain name through your web hosting service, like Bluehost. Buying a hosting plan often includes a domain for a certain period of time, so see if youre eligible for this offering before registering your domain name.

.org
Limited, but less competition than .com Difficult, due to its popularity

Once you zero in on a website name for your business, you can head to a domain registrar like Bluehost to purchase your domain.

Note that these arent hard and fast rules. For example, there arent any limitations to your domain name extension, and a for-profit business can use a .org. However, this may affect how people view your business, so keep that in mind.

Costs are also not so black and white. Domain names can cost as low as $1.99 per year to as much as hundreds of dollars, depending on the domain extension you want and the registrar you buy it on. Typically, .org and .com domain extensions cost around $10 per year to maintain.

Does Domain Extension Affect Seo

Its always beneficial to think about SEO when creating or changing a website. Your sites generic top-level domain will not affect its performance in search engines. Your top-level domain influences brand perception and trust more than anything, but s it does not take TLD into account when listing search results. Youre better off implementing other SEO best practices to climb the rankings.

There is one caveat here. If two or more websites share the same name and implement the same SEO practice, but have different extensions, the website with the .com domain extension will rank highest in most results. This is because people tend to trust .com websites and will generally choose them over .net or .biz alternatives, and websites with more traffic perform better in search engines.

Unlike the TLD, the name component of your domain does affect SEO. Your sites name tells people and search engines what your organization is and/or does.

How Can I Get A Free Website Domain

Web hosting providers like Hostinger offer free domain registration with some of their hosting plans. By using this method, you will be able to create a website faster than by purchasing the domain name separately.

Another way to get a free website domain is by using a website builder or CMS to create a websites subdomain. WordPress.com and Blogger are two examples of platforms that offer this service. With this method, users can own domains like test.wordpress.com instead of test.com.

However, free subdomains often come with minimal features and tools. Meanwhile, getting a free domain with a hosting service will offer the same freedom as purchasing one.

Do People Use Co Domains Are They Worth Buying

Im thinking of buying a .co domain name, and just wondered if theyre worth buying or not. Theyre quite expensive per year for this one i want. I never seem to see many around.

I think yes. I seem to recall Matt Cutts saying that google treats .co like .com and there are certainly some good opportunities to get good domains that are .co still.

All top level domains are treated the same by Google – the Columbian .co domain is no different from the international .com domain except that it belongs to Columbia and so that country can dictate who is allowed to use it and how much they have to pay.

As Stephen pointed out, .co belongs to Columbia and is a local domain tld similar to .co.uk, .co.nz and .com.au. For me, if youre marketing to Columbians, use the .co, if youre marketing to the UK, use .co.uk, use .co.nz for Kiwis and .com.au for Ozzies. If your market is international, though, use .com . Its all in who youre marketing to.

Regards,

Right i see, well my site is marketed internationally, its targeted at everyone around the world, and unfortunately .com is not available so would you say .co is the next best option? .net and .co.uk are also taken.

Google may associate your site with Colombia rather than the US. Even if the content is in English or not Colombia related. Its a possibility.

Has that actually ever happened? And if it did wouldnt there be a huge out cry. I dont think the internet community as a whole would allow a country stealing a domain.

Regards,

Is Co Better Than Com

.co Domain (Meaning,Price,Popularity,Is it Good?,Safety)

This depends on what benefit you are considering.

The most popular domain extension is .com. It is the domain that an internet user will usually think of while searching for a website. If you have a .com website, you do not have to worry about not being found.

But since a .co domain isnt as memorable, you will have to place more emphasis on branding the .co extension.

You should also consider how most visitors will reach your website. Is it by directly keying in your URL? If so, then having a .co extension can be confusing as most internet users tend to type in .com. So, your .co domain may get mistyped as a .com, and your visitors may end up visiting a different website.

However, many people use search engines to visit websites. If this is how you get your traffic, the exact URL or domain extension is irrelevant. Using an alternate domain extension like .co will not affect your SEO ranking. So, potential visitors who are looking for services or products that you offer can simply click on search results and reach your website.

In essence, if you can get the .com domain, it is always the best choice, especially when you rely on direct URL input for website traffic. But when a .com domain isnt available, or your visitors could find you through search engines or directory services, .co domains will work just fine.

Another concern regarding the domain choice is pricing.
