Ok, so I have an existing domain and website that I’d like to connect to my shopify store BUT I don’t want the entire

no-statik.com site to point to the Shopify store..only the “Shop” page, since the website is for ore than just shopping. How do I do this???

I need step by step with visuals if possible.

Morgan here from the Social Team at Shopify.

Thanks for reaching out. What you’re describing here is called a subdomain. A subdomain can be created to direct customers to alternate destinations that doesn’t necessarily have to be within the site that your top level domain is pointed towards. There aren’t too many steps to complete this, however, these instructions may vary slightly depending on who hosts your domain. Generally speaking, the instructions are pretty universal though.

First thing you want to do is log into your domain host admin. Here is where you can create your custom sub domain. To add a subdomain that points to your Shopify store, you need to add a specific CNAME and an A record in your DNS settings in conjunction with the prefix you choose for your subdomain.

The details you need to enter to point to your Shopify store are:Sub Domain: shop

CNAME: shops.myshopify.com

Here’s an example of how to do this within a GoDaddy domain admin:

If everything is configured properly in the domain settings, your store will now be connected!

Transfer Your Domain To Shopify

After you prepare your domain for transfer, then you can start the domain transfer process from your Shopify admin.

Steps:

  • If DOMAIN LOCKED is displayed, then make sure that you’ve prepared your domain for transfer.
  • In the Verification code dialog box, enter the authorization code, or EPP code, given by your domain provider.
  • Click Next.
  • Click Buy and transfer.
  • Check the email account associated with your domain. Depending on your domain provider, you might have an email asking you to confirm these changes. The email message varies, but you need to approve the domain transfer by clicking a link such as Confirm Transfer or Approve Transfer.
  • It can take up to 20 days for your domain to be transferred. After it’s transferred, you receive a confirmation email from Shopify, and you can access your domain settings on the Domains page in your Shopify admin. If the domain transfer isn’t successful, then you’re refunded the 1-year renewal charge.

When you create your Shopify account, you are provided a free “.myshopify.com” URL – The URL will appear on your storefront until you add a purchased domain. You can add a domain by going to Online Store/Domains – From here, you can click “Connect existing domain” to begin the process. Keep in mind that you will need to point the domain to Shopify by setting your “A” record to 23.227.38.65 and your “cname” record to shops.myshopify.com. Once you’ve applied the DNS records, it can take up to 24 hours for them to appear publicly.

Connect Existing Godaddy Domain To Shopify

    1. What you need to do first is to access the Shopify Admin. Login to your Shopify account at http://www.shopify.com.

    2. Click the Online Store sales channel on the left side to view the other sections then, click Domains.

    3. Since we are connecting an existing GoDaddy domain, we need to click the Connect Existing Domain button.

    4. It will then ask you to enter the domain name that you have previously acquired. Click Next after you have entered the domain name.

    5. Shopify will automatically detect the internet domain registrar that you have used. Since we will do this Automatically, click the Connect Automatically button.

    6. You will be asked to sign in to your GoDaddy account. Just sign in using the login details on where you purchased the domain name.

    7. Then, GoDaddy informs you that they will be disconnecting the domain from their DNS records and change it to Shopifyâs DNS records. Just click the blue Connect button to proceed with the changes.

    8. It will then give you a Success confirmation informing you that the website is already a Shopify domain. Just click the Close button to go back to Shopify.

Shopify is going to verify the connection of your GoDaddy domain. You will then receive a green callout saying that your domain is now connected with Shopify.

    9. What you need to do next is to make sure that your customer will visit your domain and not the Shopify branded domain. Click the Change Primary Domain link and select your domain name, then click Save.

    Update Dns Settings And Cname

If you have the domain name provided by a third-party vendor, such as Bluehost or OVH, you will have to modify your DNS settings and point your A record to the IP address of Shopify and the CNAME record to shops.myshopify.com.

There are four things to do at this stage.

    • Go to your Domain provider and Log in to the account.
    • Search for Domain settings, DNS configuration, or similar options.
    • Again, scan the DNS settings to find CNAME. Configure it to point to shops.myshopify.com. To save changes, look for the Save button, Add record, or something like that.

Now, with the correct CNAME record in place, lets verify the new domain.

Editing The Dns Settings For Your Shopify

    Note

Domains has moved from the Online store page to the Settings page in your Shopify admin. To access your domain settings for your online store, go to Settings> Domains.

If you have a Shopify-managed domain, then you can access and edit your DNS settings from the Domains page in your Shopify admin. You might need to edit your DNS settings if you’re doing the following tasks:

    • setting up a third-party email service on your domain
    • verifying your domain with a third-party service
    • pointing a subdomain to another website

You can access and edit the following DNS records:

    • A record
    • AAAA record
    • SRV record

When you buy your domain through Shopify or transfer a third-party domain to Shopify, the A record and CNAME record for your domain are automatically set to the default DNS records for Shopify. You can have multiple CNAME records associated with your domain, but each one must have a unique name, such as www or shop. If you want to add MX, TXT, SRV, or AAAA records, then you need to edit the DNS settings for your domain.

Changes to your DNS settings can take up to 24 hours to take effect.

    Caution

Make sure that you understand the A record and CNAME record before you make any changes to these settings. Removing or changing these records can break the connection between your domain and Shopify, which prevents your online store from being found by your domain name. Learn more about DNS records.
