The last step is to wait for the transfer to complete! Depending on your third party provider this process may be a few minutes or up to 15 days. If its taking longer than that, then its recommended to talk to your third party provider to see why there is a delay. Once your domain transfer is completed, then you are all set! Your Domains Current Host

There are a few more steps youll need to complete to transfer your domain, some of which must be done through your domains current host. After extending your domain name, follow the steps provided to:

• Make sure WHOIS privacy protection is disabled.

• Disable the registrar lock.

• Double check that your contact email address is correct and you have access to it.

• Get your domains authorization code from the current registrar and enter it to authorize the transfer process.

Youll also need to decide where to connect the domain name. You can choose to connect it to a Square Online site in your account, or leave the domain set up the way it is if you dont want to use it with a Square Online site.

Set Up The Domain Name At The New Registrar

At this point, youll need to set up the domain name at your new registrar. Namecheap is an industry standard in domain names, and I highly recommend them.

Right in Namecheaps main menu is a link called Transfer to Us. Hover over that and select Transfer Domain.

Enter the name of the domain to transfer and follow the instructions. Youll be asked to enter the transfer key that you got from Squarespace.

Update Your Name Servers

Name Servers direct the traffic for your domain to the host server. If youve already moved the website to your Bluehost account, youll want to update your nameservers now to minimize downtime during the transfer otherwise, youll have to wait until the transfer is complete. You cannot make DNS changes while the transfer is in progress, so it is important that you do it now.

Your new DNS settings will begin to propagate as soon as you save your changes. Each ISP updates at a different rate, usually taking 24 72 hours to complete worldwide. During this time, your emails will be down, and your web traffic will be directed to either the old or new host, depending on the visitors ISP.

Squarespace Domain Vs Godaddy

If youre trying to decide between Squarespace and GoDaddy for your web domain needs, there are a few things to consider. First, Squarespace has limited domain management features compared to GoDaddy. Additionally, GoDaddy offers a wider variety of top-level domains than Squarespace.

Setting Up Your Domain At Squarespace

In order to link your domain to your Squarespace site, you first need to prepare Squarespace for your domain.

If you dont already have a Squarespace account, get one at squarespace.com. If you already have an account you can skip this step.

Log into Squarespace if you havent already. From the main Squarespace screen, Click the SETTINGS link on the left side of the screen.

Type your domain under Use a Third-Party Domain and select the arrow to the right of the domain you just entered.

Once you click the arrow, two options will appear below. Locate the Connect Domain section and click the arrow inside that section.

Select a domain provider of Other and click CONNECT DOMAIN.

A message box will appear. Click CONTINUE.

The DNS Settings box will appear. Take special note of the entry under the Host column with a Required Data entry of verify.squarespace.com. This is your verification code. Dont close this browser window! Youll need to refer back to it in a few minutes.

What To Do After Transfer

Once you transfer your domain to Squarespace, here are some things to keep in mind and some of the things that you should do.

• If you want to make it your primary domain, you can head over to Home Menu. Clicks on Settings> Domains. You will see a ? sign somewhere.Click on the question mark sign and search for the domain. You will then see the option of making it primary.
• We recommend you not to add a G-suite account until the transfer is completed.
• You might not receive emails until the transfer process is completed. This is because DNS propagation takes time. You will have to wait until the process is completed.
• Thats pretty much it. Once you make these changes, you can put your focus back on the website.

Configure Registrar Dns Information

If a window labeled DNS Settings opened up and shows you information about your host, records, and required data, youll have to configure your DNS information yourself.

First, log into your domain registrars site. Typically, you will be looking for a domain menu that contains information and configuration options for your domain registration. Youll want to look for a DNS option, and the option to manage those DNS options.

If it seems like Im being a little vague here, its because every domain registrar has a slightly different configuration. The location of the specific menu items and buttons you need to click varies from registrar to registrar.

First, you will need to set the A records. A records are Address records. Heres a little aside about how domain names work :

Computers talk to each other primarily through numbers. Every computer and every server has an IP address that looks something like 127.0.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. When you type a domain name into your web browser, your browser checks a Domain Name System server and looks up the number that is associated with that name.

What youre setting now, through DNS records, is that association. Currently, your domain name points at some web hosting or to some default DNS servers for your hosts parking page. You need to tell the registrar which IP address it should point to namely, Squarespaces IP addresses.

Squarespace has four IP addresses youll need to configure as A records.

Squarespace Domain Downgrades Cancellations & Refunds

The general rule with Squarespace is that if you fail to make your payments, you get 45 days before the domain is rereleased to the registrar. That means you wont be able to use it any longer, unless you buy it again and no one else has bought it before you.

If you downgrade from an annual plan to monthly billing, your free domain will expire at the end of the yearly billing cycle. For refunds, you get a 5 day grace period, but after that you cant get money back on a bought domain.

Deleting your Squarespace site gives you the option to renew your domain, or let it expire. You can also transfer a domain you bought with Squarespace to another provider.

In short, Squarespace is pretty accommodating if you leave their service. Thats always a nice surprise with website builders.

Should I Keep My Account With My Previous Domain Provider

You can usually cancel your domain account with your previous provider after the transfer is complete. You’ll now manage all domain settings and billing through Squarespace. We recommend contacting your provider before cancelling to ensure that you won’t lose access to any special features, such as email or advanced settings.

Many online guides fail to mention this step, but its critical!!! After you transfer the domain name, these records will disappear so you need to copy them now, ESPECIALLY if you are using an email address @yourdomainname!

Log into Squarespace and go to Domains, then click on the domain you are transferring.

Next, click on DNS Settings and copy the settings that appear. I do a copy and paste of the text AS WELL AS a screenshot of the screen to make sure I dont miss anything.
