When Should Ns Records Be Updated Or Changed

Domain’s administrator should update their NS records when they need to change their nameservers. They can also update their NS records when they want their subdomain to point to the secondary nameserver.

In the example above, the primary nameserver for mydomain.com is ns1.mydomain.com. If the mydomain.com admin wanted blog.mydomain.com to resolve through ns1.mydomain.com, they could set this up by updating the NS records.

When NS records are updated, it may take several hours to replicate the changes throughout the DNS. Usually, it takes 48 hours. After that time, perform the DNS Propagation to check either these changes are fully propagated or not around the globe?

What Is A Nameserver And Its Purpose

NS stands for the nameserver. NS records are the nameserver records that contain the information of the nameservers associated with the domain.

These are the DNS records type that indicates

  • Which DNS server is authoritative for that domain.
  • Which DNS server is authorized to handle the queries related to that domain.
  • Which DNS server contains the actual DNS records or DNS server responsible for managing the DNS records for that domain.
  • Where to go to find the domain’s IP address.
  • An example of an NS record may look like the following.

    Record
    • mydomain.com represents the domain of the record
    • NS represents the DNS record type.
    • ns1.mydomain.com represents the value of the record. That is the nameserver for that domain.
    • 3600 is TTL . It is the time for which the DNS server caches the record. On the expiry of that time, the server goes for the fresh DNS records data.

If you are using Windows 10 Home version, you need to use the Windows Registry to change the network name in Windows 10. Thankfully, it is quite easy to change the network name using Windows Registry.

    1. To open the Windows Registry, press Win, type regedit in the blank field and press Enter on your keyboard.

    2. In the registry editor, go to the following location. Windows 10 users can simply copy and paste the below path in the registry editors address bar and then press Enter to go to the target key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles

    3. Under the Profiles folder, you will see a few more folders with random alphanumerics. Each folder represents a network connection in your system. When you select a folder under the Profiles folder, you will see the network name on the right panel next to ProfileName. In my case, the network name Im looking for is Network 2 and that is represented in the second folder under the Profiles folder.

    4. Now, double-click on the ProfileName value on the right panel.

    5. Enter the new name in the Value Data field and click on the Ok button.

    6. Once that is done, close the registry editor by clicking on the X icon appearing on the top-right corner.

What Happens When A Domain Name Expires

As soon as you or someone elses domain name expires, it goes through several stages before it can change ownership. The first stage is reminder letters from the hosting provider. The provider will try several times to remind the domain owner that the domain is about to expire and be extended.

If the domain owner does not respond to the reminder letters, a grace period will be in effect for a while. It is the period during which the current owner has the first right to redeem his hostname. Besides, the owner will also have to pay a fine for overdue domain renewal.

If, during this period, and the domain owner does not get in touch and does not show their desire to redeem the domain, the domain name is put up for auction and becomes available for purchase by anyone who wants to.

If no one wants to buy the site name during the auction, it will be offered for public sale on the market. Please take advantage of our Best Website Hosting Providers with the possibility to buy a domain!

In case you are the owner of an expired site name, you can try to look for it on the open market, but the better the performance, the less chance that the site name will be available for purchase.

Does this sound like a familiar situation for you?

    You:

  • Searched for a domain name,
  • Saw that it was available for registration,
  • Went back to GoDaddy only to find that it was already registered.
  • Then, of course, you think: GoDaddy stole my domain name!

How could it not be GoDaddy?

GoDaddy saw that you did the domain name availability search, the domain name is obviously brilliant, so they registered it and who knows what they plan to do with it.

But did GoDaddy really steal your domain name?

I received the following email from a reader recently:

Its heart breaking but a good lesson learned.

Obviously Im new to all this but this is really questionable business practices.

    How To Find Your Registrar

10 Domain Name Search Tools to Check Available Domains ~ WELCOME TO ...
    • Itâs likely you have received invoices for your domain name by email it is best to search your email history for these emails to find out the registrar/company you are using. Try searching for your full domain name as a starting point. You should have an email from them with the original account creation and billing information which you can use to log in and gain access.
    • Failing this you can do a WHOIS lookup, the easiest way to do this is through the lookup website , enter your top-level domain name, for example, âmydomain.comâ and click search. Look for the Registrar information this shows the company that the domain is currently hosted with. If this looks foreign check the Admin, Technical and Billing contacts and email addresses for any company name that looks familiar. You may also find a colleagueâs details which you can use to track things down further.
    • Some WHOIS lookups donât return the results you might be looking for, instead, they return a link to a provider website where you can then search for the specific details. For example, most Australian .au domain names are like this. In the public WHOIS results, you might receive a message like âVisit whois.ausregistry.com.au for Web-based WhoIsâ which requires you to go to that website to perform the search and get the full results. It just depends where your domain is registered and how much information they make publicly available.

Remove Privacy Protection From The Domain

The domain transfer will automatically fail if privacy protection is enabled on the domain name when the transfer request is initiated. All WHOIS information must be publicly visible for the transfer to go through successfully.

    To remove your privacy protection:

  • Log in to your GoDaddyDomain Control Center.
  • Access the Domain Settings page by choosing your domain.
  • Select Show personal data on WHOIS next to WHOIS Privacy Settings.
  • Check how your contact info will display on the public WHOIS directory, then select Continue.
  • Check the box next to I consent to expose my contact information in the public GoDaddy WHOIS directory., then select Continue.
  • Youll see a Success confirmation once your settings have been updated.
  • Why Dns Propagation Takes Time

Suppose you changed your domainâs nameservers, and you requested to open your domain on the web browser. Your request will not go to the hosting directly.

Each of the ISP nodes first checks its DNS cache, whether it has the DNS information for that domain. If it is not there, it will look it up to save it for future use to speed up the DNA lookup process.

Thus, the new nameservers will not propagate instantly â ISPs have different cache refreshing levels, so some will still have the old DNS information in their cache.

But if after that time interval, still, your new DNS changes are not reflecting, then you go for a DNS health check to ensure that your DNS changes are up to the mark and are following the standards.
