How To Transfer Your Domain Name Away From GoDaddy

When a domain is transferred, the nameservers associated with the domain will stay the same . However, since the domain is no longer with the old registrar, the old registrars nameservers will stop responding to queries for your domain. This will cause downtime until you switch your domain to our DNS.

Learn how to reduce downtime during transfers in this article.

NOTE: If you are using a third-party DNS such as your hosting company, the domain transfer will not cause any downtime issues, because DNS server settings will not change during the transfer.

Before placing a transfer request with us, youll need to obtain an Auth Code from GoDaddy and you will need to make sure that the domain is unlocked.

If you already have your code, log into your account, and click the banner below. If you havent, continue on to step 1 to find out how to unlock your domain.

Please dont forget to disable any GoDaddy privacy protection plan you may have in place for your domain.

How To Transfer Your Domain Name To Godaddy

It is really simple to transfer your domain to GoDaddy! All you need to do is follow these simple steps:

Step 1: The first step is to unlock the domain name that you wish to transfer to GoDaddy from your current domain name registrar.

Step 2: Now that you have unlocked your domain, you can type it into the Domain Transfer page at GoDaddys website.

GoDaddy will get the data from your current registrar, quote you a price, and tell you if the domain name is unlocked or not.

Youll know if the domain is unlocked, as there will be a green check mark next to Unlock the domain. If this area is not green but yellow, you will have to verify with your current registrar that your domain is actually unlocked.

Step 3: When you unlock your domain, you will be given an authorization code this is also called an EPP code or a transfer code.

Copy the code from your current registrar, then head on over to GoDaddys website and enter the code in the field under Get authorization code.

As long as the code is valid as it should, you will be able to proceed to the next step of the domain name transfer.

Step 4: Now that both the Unlock the domain and Get authorization code steps are marked in green, go ahead and click Continue.

Step 5: You will be given an option to buy full domain protection for $9.99/year . This is a neat feature that holds on to your domain name even if your credit card expires.

Step 6: Enter your payment details and then check out.

Best Hosting Provider In My Opinion

I have used several hosting providers in the past, and from all of them, I prefer HostPapa. HostPapa is a relatively unknown hosting provider, but it provides excellent hosting services.

While there are certainly cheaper hosting services, HostPapa isnt expensive. HostPapa comes with a free SSL certificate and a free domain for a year. It also has an excellent server performance and has a five-star rating on Trustpilot. When compared to other services I have used, such as HostGator and GoDaddy, HostPapa comes out on top.

HostGator is particularly bad, with subpar server performance and a one-star rating on Trustpilot. GoDaddy is still okay but lacks certain perks such as a free SSL certificate out of the box. It also has a two-star rating on Trustpilot.

Transfer Requirements For Top

Most domain registrars enforce requirements on transferring a domain to another registrar. The primary purpose of these requirements is to prevent the owners of fraudulent domains from repeatedly transferring the domains to different registrars. Requirements vary, but the following requirements are typical:

  • You must have either registered the domain with the current registrar or transferred registration for the domain to the current registrar at least 60 days ago.

  • If the registration for a domain name expired and had to be restored, it must have been restored at least 60 days ago.

  • The domain cannot have any of the following domain name status codes:

  • clientTransferProhibited

  • redemptionPeriod

  • serverTransferProhibited

  • The registries for some top-level domains don’t allow transfers until changes are complete, such as changes to the domain owner.

  • For a current list of domain name status codes and an explanation of what each code means, go to the website for ICANN, and search for “EPP status codes”.

ICANN is the organization that establishes policies governing registration and transfer of domain names.

Godaddy ‘transfer Fee’ Gotta Be Kidding

Google Domains vs GoDaddy for Domains
      |

Edit: There is no fee if you are selling a domain that is being transferred to Godaddy. I was mistaken due to not noticing the wording below that is burried in the body of the email from Godaddy:”…or you’re transferring the domain to a new owner, please forward this email to the appropriate Account Holder to complete the transfer process.”PS. The confusion is that it looks like you are charging a fee to the original selling owner, which you are not!!!

How Much Should Domain Renewal Cost

The domain renewal cost varies a lot among various service providers and there is no fixed price for this service. Also, no global rules and regulations are in place concerning that. Numerous companies offer this service at different prices.

Ideally, the renewal cost of the domain name should be similar to the registration cost. But the renewal cost depends on the popularity of the domain and the price structure of the domain registrar.

    Prepare Your Domain For Transfer

Before you can transfer your domain to Shopify, you need to unlock your domain and get a transfer authorization code from your domain provider.

When you transfer a domain to Shopify, your domain’s A record and CNAME record are set to Shopify’s default domain records. If additional records are present on your domain before the transfer, then make a copy of those records to add to the Domains section of your Shopify admin after the transfer. For example, you might need to add an MX record to reconnect your domain to an email hosting service.

    Note

The process for preparing a domain for transfer varies by third-party domain provider. If you have trouble preparing your domain for transfer, then contact your third-party domain provider. Shopify Support can’t log in to your third-party domain account for you, even if you give your explicit permission.

    Steps:

  • Log in to your third-party domain provider account.
  • Confirm that the email address associated with your account is up to date and doesn’t belong to the domain that you want to transfer.
  • Make a copy of any domain records that you might need to configure your domain after the transfer.
  • Click Unlock next to the domain that you want to transfer. You might need to approve this choice by clicking on a link in a confirmation email.
  • Click Transfer this domain, Transfer out, or similar to get a transfer authorization code from your provider.

Does Transferring A Domain Name Affect My Custom Email Address

Moving your domain name doesnt mean you have to move your email hosting.

Are you using a third party to host your email? If so, it shouldnt be affected by transferring a domain name. Domain.com does not make changes to the name servers for your domain during the transfer process.

If your custom email address is hosted with your domain provider, a transfer could affect you. To avoid that, make sure to transfer your email accounts MX records to your new registrar while transferring your domain. By doing this, youll ensure your email account is linked to your domain name. However, youll continue to manage your email with your original provider.

Prepare Your Domain For Transfer Within Godaddy

Congrats, purchase of the transfer is done. Its time to prepare domain for transfer within a Godaddy account. You need to:

  • Turn off the domain lock.
  • Cancel private registration if any.
  • Note 1: If you updated registrant contact records in last 60 days, your domain name will have 60-day transfer lock. According to the ICANN policy 60-day period is a security measure that helps to prevent domain names from being hijacked or stolen and transferred to another registrar.

Godaddy has a special process to remove this lock. Contact their Review60 Team and ask for the registrant contact revert to the party that was listed prior to the changes.

Note 2: This revert will not affect the administrative contact email address which receives transfer-related correspondence.

Things To Consider Before Transferring Your Domain Away From Godaddy

  • Before going further with the domain transfer, it is important to know that when a domain name is transferred away, the name servers associated with your domain stay the same during the transfer from one registrar to the other. So for example, if your domain name is using the default name servers of GoDaddy, those name servers will be preserved during the transfer and you wont be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete. This means that if you switched to another web hosting provider and your website was migrated already, before initiating a domain transfer, make sure that your domain name is pointed to the new providers name servers. As we previously mentioned you wont be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete.
  • Domain Name Registrations and Web Hosting are separate services. The domain name transfer process will not automatically migrate your website. If you are a ChemiCloud customer and you wish to transfer your website from GoDaddy, please submit a migration request from your client area. Our migrations experts will move your existing sites and emails free of charge, seamlessly, and with no downtime.
  • The transfer of your domain name will include your domain renewal with another year. So for instance, if your domain is due to expire on 1st of January 2025, once the transfer is complete, the new expiration date will be 1st of January 2026.
  • Ensure that the domain has not been registered or transferred in the last 60 days.
