Paying for your domain might seem like the last step in the process, but you also need to verify your ownership. This step lets you send email using the domain and keeps other people from using it without your permission.

If you purchase your domain through Mailchimp, this process is simple. Youll receive a verification email after you complete your purchase. Simply click on the Verify Domain button in the email and follow the instructions on the next page, and you can start using your domain to build your brand. Youll only ever have to complete this step once.

A Few Words Before You Go

While you cant really permanently own a domain name, you can take solace in the fact that no one really owns a domain name, anyway. But theres something wonderful about the vibrancy and flexibility of the internet, the way it shapeshifts and evolves to suit the needs of the users.

In other words, this design actually makes sense when you think about the fact that the growing demands of the internet require a system thats also manageably scalable. So, taxes are paid to the ICANN, domain extension fees are paid to registry operators, and domain lease is paid to domain companies just so that everything can keep functioning properly.

As weve covered, though, this doesnt mean that you cant enjoy the security of being in charge of your domain for as long as you wish. All you have to do is register and pay for your domain for the next 10 years, and then turn on auto-renew. Your domain company will charge your pre-funded account and make sure the domain remains under your name before it expires and someone else gets a hold of it.

How To Resolve Forever Domains

Weve created an open source menu bar app called Fingertip that uses hnsd, an SPV resolver daemon for the Handshake network, plus Ethereum, to make it easy to resolve .forever domains. The app also helps render https with DANE. You can and view the source code here. Check out how easy it is to set up:

You can also install hsd and run it with the Handover plugin we have created, which resolves ENS names using HIP-0005 and EIP-1185.

Once youve done this, you can test it out by resolving this name in your browser:

What is awesome about this is that by clicking the link above, you are viewing the site with a completely secure and encrypted connection that is independent of any third party Certificate Authority.

Eventually, we expect resolving names will become even easier as more browsers and DNS service providers enable resolution for Handshake in the future.

What Happens If A Domain Name Expires

Can You Buy a Domain Name Forever (+What Are Your Options)?

When you own a website, you should be responsible for knowing and understanding the terms of your domain registration. ICANN mandates registrars to send renewal reminders to the registrants at least two times before the expiration of the domain.

When your domain name expires, your status will automatically change to a renewal grace period. If you encounter this scenario, we suggest you renew your registration within the grace period to avoid paying any additional cost.

You also have to remember that once your domain is in this status, you no longer have access to it, and there will be a parking page sign to signal that it has expired. After the grace period, your status will be put on hold. If you still want to continue your online business, we highly encourage you to act fast and pay both the redemption and renewal fees during the hold status.

In case you werent able to reclaim your domain, it will be available for auction where the highest bidder takes ownership. The good news is that you still have the chance to reclaim it by paying the fees within 30 days. If you did, the bidding fee will be returned to the bidder.

However, if you fail to renew your contract during the auction, your domain name will be transferred to the new owner after 30 days. On the other hand, if the domain name is put on a closeout sale in case it was not sold during the auction and not reclaimed by the original owner.

How To Buy A Cheap Domain

When youre just starting out as a business and want to keep the costs down, a cheap domain looks attractive. Luckily, there are often promotions to take advantage of, so its a good idea to keep your eyes peeled and get a discount on your favorite unique domain. Here at Namecheap, we even offer domain names for just $0.99.

Just like sales in real life, deals appear throughout the year at specific times where you snag a great domain price, such as Hosting Black Friday, or when a new TLD is launched. For example, our current deals page regularly changes and often includes domains that you can buy cheap for a limited time.

Keep Your Services Separate

Its never a good idea to have all your services with one company. With Shopify you would end up using them for every aspect of your online store. From your domain name, hosting, CMS and the online store website builder. All with one company.

While the upside of this is ease of use, what happens if you ever want to move your store away from Shopify? Then it becomes a bit complicated and even more so if your domain name is registered through them. You can move a domain name from Shopify domain to a domain registrar, which is called a domain name transfer, but that process is costly in terms of time and price.

So why not save money and keep your portfolio of domains at a domain name registrar? On top of that, Shopify is registering your domain name on your behalf through a domain name registrar anyways and adding a small fee to make a profit. Instead, why not cut out Shopify from the equation and just register directly yourself?

How Forever Was Implemented

.forever is a TLD on the decentralized root zone Handshake, which is built on a proof of work blockchain. People can open auctions and bid on TLDs directly using the Handshake protocol. Once the auction is over and the winner has registered the name, it is only owned and controlled by the wallet that registered the name.

To create truly decentralized second-level domains, we must remove the control that the owner of the TLD has over the TLD. We need to prove that the owner of the TLD will not suddenly pull the rug out from all of the second-level domain owners by changing the records for the TLD.

To do this, we first set the NS for the .forever TLD to point to the ENS contract that we deployed :

Handshake uses Bitcoin-like redeem scripts, so we then used the following script to make the .forever TLD uneditable by anyone:

Handshake is a fork of Bitcoin, with added covenants, so we can use this script to prove to second-level domain owners that they do not need to trust the owner of the .forever TLD, because the data currently on the blockchain for the TLD can no longer be changed. This script says that the only transaction that is acceptable is a RENEW transaction, and it can be done by anyone. So no one can update the .forever TLD, but anyone can renew it. The .forever TLD is now unowned by anyone .

Here Are Some Of The Tips To Help You Avoid Missing Domain Renewals

  • Register for a longer time
  • Set to have your domain auto-renew
  • This might cost you a little more but its worth it especially if it involves a domain you no longer use but would like to retain its ownership.

  • Use one registrar for all your domains
  • This helps you remember to check all your domains from a single place thereby making it easier to monitor those nearing expiration.

  • Use group email address to receive notifications on all your domain renewals
  • Setting up a group email alias that sends messages to several people in your organization can ease the process of monitoring domain expiry dates.

You can enter your domain renewals in your calendar to help you easily monitor their expiry dates. Try to renew any domain at least 30 days before its expiration. If you fail to do it, your calendar sends you an alert regarding any upcoming renewals.

    Domains Make You Searchable

Double Check The Domain You Want To Buy

When purchasing a domain name, youve got to ensure that it doesnt contain any trademarks. You should also expand your search to other domains. If youre buying domain, check whether theres someone using the same domain with a different extension .

If there is any, check whether theres a scope of your customers to get confused. If not, you can buy it. Try to say your domain out loud. This will reveal problems that you didnt notice before.

For instance, youll get to know whether youve got to spell it out before someone gets it right. Do a Google search for the name you intend to use. This is an excellent way to check whether other companies may be using your phrase in ways you didnt know.

    What Is A Domain Name

Every website on the internet has an IP address. These addresses point to a websites location think of them like GPS coordinates. The IP address, which is generally a set of numbers, usually resembles something like this:

Unfortunately, trying to remember all of those numbers in order to navigate to a website can be challenging. Thats where domain names step in and lend a hand.

A structure called the Domain Name System translates those IP addresses into names that are simple to remember. Those names are called domain names.

Your website’s domain is what people enter into the address bar on their browsers to point it toward your website. In the simplest terms, if an IP address is your websites GPS coordinates, the domain is its street address. Some examples are mailchimp.com and google.com.

When someone types a domain into a browser, it gets routed through a DNS server. That server translates the name to figure out which IP address it points to. Then it grabs the data for that website and delivers it to the browser. This process happens in a matter of seconds, letting you find and view a website fast.
