Set Up Your Existing Domain To Connect To Shopify
If you’ve purchased your domain through third party, then you need to edit your DNS settings and point your A record to Shopify’s IP address, which is 126.96.36.199 Copy, and your CNAME record to point to shops.myshopify.com Copy.
Log in to the account you have with your domain provider.
Find your DNS settings. Look for your account admin panel, or your domain management area, or DNS configuration, or similar.
Edit your A record to point to Shopify’s IP address 188.8.131.52 Copy
The admin panel might feature drop-downs or editable fields, or you might have to check boxes or edit a table. However you interact with the admin, you need to:
Save the A Record .
Find the CNAME record in your DNS settings.
Change your www CNAME record to point to shops.myshopify.com Copy. This redirects your customers to your store when they enter www before your domain name.
Often, you need to provide just the prefix without the dot, but for some domain providers you need the whole subdomain. Use the existing entries as a guide, or follow your provider’s instructions.
CNAME records must always point to a domain name, never to an IP address.
Save the CNAME Record .
Now you need to verify your connection in Shopify.
If Youre A Bit Tech Savvy And Have Used Domains Before Thats Fine
And if youre a complete noob when it comes to DNS settings and name servers, maybe sticking to Shopify is the best option for you.
2) Buy your domain inside of Shopify
Within Shopify theres an option where you can buy a domain and they will register it for you and set everything up correctly. Shopify will also automatically request an SSL certificate for you which is required to encrypt your store whenever you accept credit card payments.
However, you cant register all domain endings. So if you want a local domain ending like .de or .es or something exotic, youll have to use a third party service like GoDaddy to get those domain names.
At the end of the day both options are great.
Ive used Shopify as well as third party services to buy domain names and it was straight forward in both cases. Buying the domains directly within Shopify always gave me less technical headaches though.
None of this is rocket science, it just needs to get done.
So ask yourself whats more important: Saving money or having less technical headaches?
That should point you in the right direction.

Which Should You Choose
As you can see, the decision between Shopify domains and Google Domains or another 3rd party domain provider is completely up to you, and it should depend on what matters to you.
If youre relatively new to websites and how they work, Shopifys domain service is a very affordable way to get many of the details taken care of for you. On the other hand, if youre comfortable with and are willing to take on the extra bit of work, going with a 3rd party domain provider can save you some money.
Finally, if youre still undecided, perhaps you can think about the benefits of diversifying your risk by splitting your domain registration and ecommerce store hosting between two separate entities.

Shopify Domains: Creating Changing And Migrating Domains
- Post Date
Shopify is designed to be an all-in-one solution for eCommerce startups: a hosted platform, complete content management software, and an array of themes, apps, and add-ons for creating a competitive online store. But before you can do all of that, you need a domain name to call home, and Shopify can even help with this. Here is what you need to know about Shopify domains.
It Says Says Youre Forward
Having a domain name sends a message to the world that you are making your mark in the new generation. It shows that you are well informed of the requirements that your business will ask in order to establish. Your domain name can be small and simple, but it must be unique and attractive so that you can drive more traffic to your store than expected.
Update Domain Settings To Connect To Shopify
If you decide to go ahead and purchase your domain through Namecheap or another third party domain registrar, then you need to edit a couple of settings. You are going to need to change to parts of the DNS Settings :
Thats it just two edits to overwrite the default entries.
To change these DNS settings, you just need to log into your third party domain registrars account, find the domain and click edit settings.
For Namecheap, this is how you do it:
It should look like this:
Now the final step is to just verify the connection.
Understanding A Custom Domain
A custom domain is a branded label connected to a websites IP address. It is unique for every website, more like a fingerprint. Type the custom domain name into the URL bar of your browser, and it will open up. For instance, the custom domain for Website Pandas is websitepandas.com.
A domain name registration is done for proprietary reasons, especially if you are running an ecommerce or any other business. It gives you complete ownership over your website and its IP address and ensures no one can claim it. It simplifies how visitors remember your website and find you.
However, purchasing and registering a custom domain name has additional advantages. Through personalization, from your logo to a domain, you will establish credibility, fortify your brand identity, and ensure your online presence is set apart from your competitors.
Make sure your custom domain name is easy to remember, spell and pronounce. It should preferably be short but unique. It should help visitors identify and recognize your Shopify store and tell them what it is all about. For instance, Google is a popular search engine. But did you know that it was almost named BackRub or Alphabet? The word Google comes from the word googol. It is a mammoth number that mirrors millions of web pages that are indexed by the search engine.
If budget allows, choose a website building platform that lets you connect to a custom domain.
