What Happens When A Domain Expires

How to Register a Domain Name – Beginners Guide!

There are a variety of steps that will occur during a domain name expiration:

Step 1:

Domain expiration alerts: Prior to domain name registration expiration, Domain.com will begin sending reminders to you via email. At least two alerts will be sent before expiration, and one within five days of expiration.

Step 2:

Domain name registration expires: If the domain has not been renewed by the owner prior to the expiry date, the domains status will be changed to what is called a Renewal Grace Period. Under this status, you can still renew the domain name without incurring additional fees for a grace period of thirty days. As early as one day after expiration, your domain name will be deactivated and replaced with a parking page indicating the domain name has expired, and other services you have associated with the domain name may no longer function.

Step 3:

Renewal grace period ends: Once this period ends, the expired domain names status is changed to Registrar Hold. During this thirty-day period, the original domain owner may pay a redemption fee as well as the renewal fee.

Step 4:

Step 4b:

Step 5:

Step 6:

End of registry grace period: If this grace period ends without the domain name being renewed, it will then be put under the status of pending delete. If no actions of restoration occur on the part of the original owner, registry or registrar, the domain will eventually be deleted. This deletion will then release that domain name back for general registration.

How To Keep A Domain Name Secure

What is Domain Name Registration and Its Requirement ...

Once a domain name has been registered with a registrar, that registrar is in charge of notifying the registrant when their domain is about to expire and giving them the chance to renew, ensuring they dont lose their domain name. In some cases registrars will prey on their users by buying those domains the second they expire and then selling them back to the original registrant at an exorbitant price. Its important to choose an honest and trustworthy registrar to avoid these kinds of predatory practices.

From Domain Registry To Registrant

Now that you understand the different roles in the domain registration process, lets quickly demonstrate how those pieces interact.

1. Domain registry creates a new TLD

The first step in the process is for the domain registry to create a new TLD. For instance, the .world extension was created and distributed by the Donuts Registry.

2. Domain registrars acquire rights to sell the new TLD

After the domain registry creates the extension and sets the guidelines for using the TLD, they negotiate with registrars to sell that domain to the public. Donuts Registry worked with GoDaddy to make .world domain names available on GoDaddys platform.

3. Domain registrants find and register the domain name

Once domain names for the new TLDs become available via the domain registrars, people or organizations can find and register their domain name using that extension.

Each domain name using an extension can only be registered once, so its important to register your domain as soon as possible to avoid losing your domain name.

For instance, if you are a travel organization or travel blogger, you might want to register a domain like see.world.

4. Domain changes travel back up the chain

When the domain registrant makes changes to the domain settings such as updating the DNS records, it must be reported back to the domain registry which stores all the information about the domains using its extensions.

What Is Defensive Domain Name Registration

With cybersquatters scooping up names related to brands left, right and centre many companies engage in what’s known as “defensive” domain name registration.

Large corporations may have huge portfolios of defensive registrations that incorporate common misspellings of their company name, the names of products and abbreviations. Given the recent trend of countries relaxing regulations their domain name extensions, these defensive registrations may even include countries where the company has no business presence.

While this can be an expensive undertaking, corporations do this to protect their brands fromcybersquatting and to avoid having to take costly and time-consuming legal action should another party infringe on their brand.

However, according to Elisa Cooper, Director of Product Marketing at MarkMonitor, with new generic Top-Level Domains expected to be available from 2011 and further expanding of the top level domain space as a result, companies arequestioning whether or not they really need all of these registrations. Ms. Cooper also points out that many of these defensive domain name registrations don’t direct visitors to any content.

Should I Register More Than One Domain

Yes! Registering multiple domain names protects your brand from domain squatters or copycats who may try to register alternative versions of your domain. For example, if you own coffeelovers.com, you may want to consider registering coffeelovers.net and coffeelovers.org as well. You may want to consider misspelled versions of your domain name too.

If you have not renewed within these 30 days, there is a further 30-day period known as the redemption period during which you can recover the domain for a fee. Host a website or build an online store

A website or online store is an obvious and powerful way to use your domain name.

Create your own .CA email address

Your .CA domain name can be used for personalized email addresses

Link your .CA to your social media profile

You can forward your .CA domain to another online or social media profile, like Facebook, LinkedIn, or Etsy – anywhere you want.

I think a .CA will always be the number one domain for us partly because of the brand value that Canada has abroad the quality that Canada brings, the brand recognition. I personally believe that a .CA has more brand appeal internationally than a .com does.

What Is A Domain Name Server

Everything You Need To Know About Domain Name Registration

We talked earlier about how computers dont use domain names to recognize website addresses, they use IP addresses. Domain name servers are the technology that translates between the two. The domain name system is the protocol established to ensure machines exchange the right data for the average internet viewer to see the correct webpage when they type a domain name into their browser or click on a link.

Domain name servers play an important role in that system, storing all the information required to connect a specific domain name address to the correct IP address. Each time a computer queries a domain name server for a particular domain name, it finds the appropriate IP address to serve up.

Anatomy Of A Domain Name

Domain names are typically broken up into two or three parts, each separated by a dot. When read right-to-left, the identifiers in domain names go from most general to most specific. The section to the right of the last dot in a domain name is the top-level domain . These include the generic TLDs such as .com, .net, and .org, as well as country-specific TLDs like .uk and .jp.

To the left of the TLD is the second-level domain and if there is anything to the left of the 2LD, it is called the third-level domain . Lets look at a couple of examples:

For Googles US domain name, google.com:

  • .com is the TLD
  • google is the 2LD

But for Google UKs domain name, google.co.uk:

  • .com is the TLD
  • .co* is the 2LD
  • google is the 3LD

*In this case the 2LD indicates the type of organization that registered the domain

Why Is The Domain Name System Important

Machines and humans communicate differently. While we might prefer letters and words, computers use numbers to communicate back and forth. Fortunately, the internet was designed to accommodate these different preferences through DNS resolution.

If we were asked to remember the IP addresses to any website we wanted to visit, it would be overwhelming and cumbersome. It would be like trying to memorize all your contacts phone numbers and needing to input the entire number in your phone whenever you wanted to call or text that person. It just wouldnt be efficient.

However, thanks to DNS, users only need to remember the domain name.

DNS resolution occurs in milliseconds so the user never recognizes that the process is occurring.

What Is A Domain Name And Why Is It Important

A domain name is the physical name of a website, and its arguably the most important part of your website. Much like your physical address or a phone number, there cannot be two identical domain names.

The backend of domain names can only be accessed and used by the domain name owner known as the domain name registrant . Domain names can also be bought and sold like assets in domain name auctions.

A domain name is the combination of letters, number and symbols someone types in their browser to access a specific web address directly.

For example, if you wanted to visit GoDaddys website, you couldnt access it by typing GoDaddy in your browser that would simply provide you search results for GoDaddy and would not render the actual website. Instead, you need to type the domain name GoDaddy.com in the browser to navigate to GoDaddys website.

A domain name is an easier way to browse the internet and access a specific website instead of using an IP address, which is the convoluted strings of numbers and letters computers use to recognize a website.

Because a domain name is meant to make it easier for people to visit your website, its important to keep it simple and memorable.

Picking the perfect domain name can have a critical role in how well your website performs.
