It’s no wonder that so many people look to upgrade to a different platform and eventually land on Squarespace.

Here’s how to migrate your site as quickly and efficiently as possible, with a minimum of service disruption.

Update Your Registration Info At Squarespace

The first thing you should do is update your domain names Registration Information at Squarespace. Specifically, make sure you have access to the email account listed.

One Year Of Free Domain For Yearly Plans

Squarespace offers a free domain when you buy a yearly subscription. It also works if youre using the free trial and upgrade to an annual plan. Same if youre on a monthly plan and upgrade to an annual plan.

• Once you select a domain, there is a five day grace period where you can still decide to change it. After that, its set in stone.
• Squarespace domains are set to auto-renew by default. You can disable the option in your Domains panel.
• After the first year, youll need to pay $20 per year for the domain. Depending on the TLD, there may also be taxes to pay on top.

Finally, if you want to buy additional domains, they will cost you $20 $70 each, depending on the TLD . Having multiple domains point to the same site can be useful for covering misspellings or translated versions of your domain name, for example.

Before you can transfer your domain to Shopify, you need to unlock your domain and get a transfer authorization code from your domain provider.

When you transfer a domain to Shopify, your domain’s A record and CNAME record are set to Shopify’s default domain records. If additional records are present on your domain before the transfer, then make a copy of those records to add to the Domains section of your Shopify admin after the transfer. There are a few more steps youll need to complete to transfer your domain, some of which must be done through your domain’s current host. After extending your domain name, follow the steps provided to:

• Make sure WHOIS privacy protection is disabled.

• Disable the registrar lock.

• Double check that your contact email address is correct and you have access to it.

• Get your domains authorization code from the current registrar and enter it to authorize the transfer process.

Youll also need to decide where to connect the domain name. You can choose to connect it to a Square Online site in your account, or leave the domain set up the way it is if you dont want to use it with a Square Online site.

Move A Squarespace Domain

If we host your domain, use the steps and information in this section to move your domain to a different site.

Before you begin, ensure that your Squarespace domain meets these requirements:

• The domain must be active. It’s not possible to move an expired domain.
• You must be the site owner or have Administrator permissions on both sites.
• The sites must be on the same Squarespace account. If the site you’re moving to isn’t on your account, request to be added as a contributor with Administrator permissions.

Start with the site where your domain is currently linked:

Note: If you dont see a Move Domain to Another Site button, you dont have another site with a on your account. Review your sites in your account dashboard and upgrade your trial site, if needed, before moving the domain.

Your domain should connect to the new site within 24 hours, but it can take up to 72 hours.

After moving your domain, you can cancel service or change the billing plan for your other site, if needed.

If you have a Google Workspace subscription attached to your domain, ensure it meets the requirements to move automatically.

Alternatives To Google Workspace Email Accounts For Squarespace

If you want a more affordable option than Google Workspace, its still possible to get a professional email account linked to your domain. You have two options there:

• Link an email account to the domain you bought on Squarespace
• Buy an email and domain from the same provider, then connect to Squarespace

Its always good practice to keep your email accounts and domain with the same company. This saves a lot of time and hassle in case you need to migrate later.

So for the cheaper providers? Weve always had great results with Namecheap. You can even get up to 5 free accounts with Zoho Workplace and there might be other solutions out there too.

Start Using The New Nameservers Before Transferring The Domain Name

When youre sure youve copied the DNS settings properly, you should switch to using the new nameservers .

This is important to avoid downtime after you transfer the name. Squarespace gets rid of the domain names nameservers soon after the transfer is completed . If you havent specified new nameservers for the domain name in that time, the site wont resolve and any email addresses using that domain name wont work. .

Log back into Squarespace, go to the Domains section, and click on your domain. There should be a button that allows you to modify the nameservers. Change these to the nameservers specified by your registrar .

The change is not instantaneous and could take a day to migrate. Do a whois on the domain name to verify when its done.

After you verify the nameservers have changed, verify that email is working as well .

Review Your Contact Information

Your contact information is included on your domain’s record in the WHOIS database, as required by ICANN. Upon transfer, the gaining registrar will use the information on the domain’s record to email critical information regarding the transfer to the administrative contact, so you need to correct it. It’s best to avoid using an email address associated with the domain use a public email service, like Gmail, instead.

Updating the registrant contact information for a general top-level domain will initiate a Change of Registrant process, which requires additional verification before the new information is saved. Each registrar handles this process differently, so check with yours to see what you need to do.
