What Happens When A Domain Expires

There are a variety of steps that will occur during a domain name expiration:

    Step 1:

Domain expiration alerts: Prior to domain name registration expiration, Domain.com will begin sending reminders to you via email. At least two alerts will be sent before expiration, and one within five days of expiration.

    Step 2:

Domain name registration expires: If the domain has not been renewed by the owner prior to the expiry date, the domains status will be changed to what is called a Renewal Grace Period. Under this status, you can still renew the domain name without incurring additional fees for a grace period of thirty days. As early as one day after expiration, your domain name will be deactivated and replaced with a parking page indicating the domain name has expired, and other services you have associated with the domain name may no longer function.

    Step 3:

Renewal grace period ends: Once this period ends, the expired domain names status is changed to Registrar Hold. During this thirty-day period, the original domain owner may pay a redemption fee as well as the renewal fee.

    Step 4:

    Step 5:

    Step 6:

End of registry grace period: If this grace period ends without the domain name being renewed, it will then be put under the status of pending delete. If no actions of restoration occur on the part of the original owner, registry or registrar, the domain will eventually be deleted. This deletion will then release that domain name back for general registration.

What Is The Difference Between Shared And Dedicated Hosting

    Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting is the equivalent of owning your own home. It is entirely yours, and no one else can use it without your expressed permission. For dedicated hosting, the server is dedicated to powering a single domain giving you the most power, bandwidth, and memory.

For an in-depth comparison, see our helpful guide on .

Dedicated hosting is not for everyone and generally provides more resources than the average business requires. Dedicated hosting is ideal for very large companies that regularly experience a high volume of internet traffic or sales, or require a large amount of disk space. Dedicated hosting grants you the greatest flexibility, customization, and security of the three types of hosting but is also the most expensive.

    How to renew your domains

Of the hundreds of millions of domain names that are already in circulation, some are very popular. There is a secondary market for the purchase of domain names put up for sale by their current holders. The most generic domains can sell at very high prices, depending on the sector they are linked to. The price is set by the seller, and generally takes the commercial potential of this domain name into account. One of the most popular SEO strategies is to buy back a domain name, which enables the new holder to benefit from its longevity.

Domain name lifecycles can be broken down into four pieces: Active, Expired, Redemption Grace Period, and Pending Deletion.

    • When your domain is active, you can change its settings and modify contact information. Having an active domain name is essential to keeping your website online and your professional email working.
    • A domain becomes active once its been registered, those registration periods lasting anywhere from 1 to 10 years.
  • A domain officially becomes expired one day after its expiration date. Your website and any email addresses associated with your domain name wont function. Instead, your website will display a parked page.
  • Note: Others can bid on and attempt to purchase the domain name as soon as it expires however, your claim to the domain takes priority over 3rd party bids if you renew your domain within 30 days of its expiration.
  • Redemption Grace Period
  • After about 45 days of being in an expired state, the domain name will enter a redemption grace period. Some TLDs may enter redemption status the day after they expire.
  • Note: If your domain is in a redemption period you can still retrieve it. Most registrars will charge a redemption fee in addition to your normal domain renewal rate. You can contact us if your domain was registered through Domain.com and you need to redeem it during the redemption period.

Hidden Costs Of Domain Name Renewals

Domain renewals can be inflated by hidden costs of services or addons you may have selected while buying the domain.

You dont necessarily need to pay for these again especially if you have opted for cheaper services that do the same thing.

    1. WHOIS and Domain Privacy

ICANN requires every domain owner to provide their contact information which is then added to a public record called the WHOIS database.

This includes you name or company name, address, phone number, and email address.

They do this so that others can contact you to buy your domain name, resolve copyright issues, pitch potential business partnerships, and more.

While there are upsides to the WHOIS database, it can also lead to spam and fraudulent emails and phone calls.

This is why many domain registrars sell an addon called Domain Privacy Protection which typically costs an additional $9.99 per year.

When you buy it, the domain registrar will hide your info and display their companys data instead.

However, due to privacy laws, especially in the EU, much of the info in the WHOIS database had been redacted. So you may not need this service at all.

The problem is that often registrars automatically add it to the cart. You have to remove it if you dont want to pay for it.

    2. Business Email Accounts

You may have to opted to purchase professional business email addresses.

But you can actually get a free business email address with most web hosting companies.

    3. Addons

    When Websites Cease To Exist

  • In 2010, the Dallas Cowboys website blinked off the Web when the team failed to renew its domain name. During the down time, which lasted a couple of days, fans could not visit the website, instead viewing a picture of children playing soccer. Web surfers may see less than that if they visit your site after it expires.
