Transferring My Domain Registration Away From Godaddy
Before attempting to transfer a domain away from GoDaddy, you must complete the following steps.
Important
- After purchasing a domain, you must wait 60 days before transferring it to a new host. This is not a HostGator-specific rule but rather a rule implemented by ICANN, which governs domain registrations. Please review ICANN’s Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars for more information.
- Wait for 24-48 hours after unlocking the domain to ensure it takes effect in WHOIS.
- While we try to ensure you have the most up-to-date information, GoDaddy is a third party, and Steps 1-4 on this article may change without us knowing.
Change Nameservers In Godaddy
Login to your GoDaddy account and launch Domains Settings panel of your registered domain which you want to point to Bluehost.
Go to Nameservers option available under Settings tab. You will see GoDaddy nameservers are assigned by default and click on Manage link.
GoDaddy nameservers will be like NSxx.DOMAINCONTROL.COM where xx represents two digits like 01, 02, etc.
Enter Bluehost nameservers in the popup screen and save your changes. Default Bluehost nameservers are NS1.BLUEHOST.COM and NS2.BLUEHOST.COM or you can use direct IP addresses of the servers.
You can get the nameservers in your Bluehost hosting account under Domains > Domain List > Choose Your Domain > Name Servers.
Once you changed nameservers, it may take sometime for the changes to propagate. Click on the DNS Zone File tab to see the below message showing that your DNS zone file is not available with GoDaddy.

Manage Your Data Use Consent Preferences
After you complete your domain transfer, youll receive an email with the subject-line Control how your data is shared. The email contains a link that brings you to Tucows Incs Data Use Consent Settings. Tucows is the parent company of OpenSRS, the service that Shopify uses to resell domains to merchants. Giving consent is optional, and you can withdraw it at any time.

Once you have completed the Domain Transfer Purchase, your domain will be available immediately in your GoDaddy account. To confirm that the domain transferred, follow these steps:
Backup Your Website From Godaddy
First, login in to your Godaddy hosting and navigate to My products tab and click manage in your Web hosting tab.

On the left-hand side of new window, you will find your databases from which you should select the database of the website you are transferring. The database will expand on the right side, and you will see various tables appearing, like comments, posts, etc.
Go to top menu and select Export.
In Export Menu select Quick and Format and then select SQL as the format of the database. You can leave all other values in setting to the default selection. Hit go and the database will be saved on your computer.
Next, download the files related to website configuration.
On the next page, find and click on the public_html folder that will open its contents on the right side.
Here you select all or select the folder of the website you want to transfer.
After selecting the files click on the compress and select Zip Archive. Then you should download compressed files to your computer.
Make sure that you have downloaded both the website database and the website files from the public_html folder before moving to the next step.
Alternatively, you can also go to Cpanel of your GoDaddy hosting and take the backup of your website by clicking the backup website option.

Enter Hostgator Nameservers On Godaddy
Now login to your GoDaddy account. After logging to your account, youll be automatically redirected to the Products page.
If you are not redirected, just click on your name from the higher right side corner and click on My Products.

Approve The Transfer Of The Domain Name
Once the transfer request has been successfully submitted and the process has been initiated at the registry level , you should receive an email to the listed administrative contact for the domain from GoDaddy informing you that the domain transfer request was received. This is a typical security measure. You will have to approve the transfer in your GoDaddy control panel to speed up the process:
- Log into your GoDaddy account
- Click My Account
- Next to Domains, click Launch
