What Is Ultimate Domain Protection And Security Renewal

What I Looked At To Find The Best Domain Registrar

McAfee Antivirus Software Review: is it a total protection?

Finding a good domain registrar is a task Im very familiar with.

I dont always pick the same one, because certain domain registrars are better to use in different situations.

Lets go through your options.

There are basically three ways to get a domain name:

  • Use a domain registrar
  • Get a domain name bundled with hosting
  • Buy a domain name through a reseller
  • Domain registrars handle the tech side of assigning IP addresses to domain names and reserving domain names as well.

Popular domain registrars include Domain.com and Namecheap. Both of these sites make it incredibly easy to find and purchase an available domain name.

In order to get your site online, however, you need to get web hosting in addition to a domain name.

Some great web hosting providers, like Bluehost, offer domain names bundled with hosting. In fact, Bluehost includes a free domain name for the first year when you sign up for hosting.

If you already have a web host you like, I recommend using a domain registrar.

But if you dont currently have web hosting for your site or you arent thrilled by the quality of your current hosting situation, Id go with Bluehost.

The third option, domain resellers, are exactly what they sound like. They resell domain names in partnership with domain registrars, but resellers typically charge extra so they can make money, too. Also, they usually dont have dedicated support.

For these reasons, I dont recommend buying through a reseller.

A Lack Of Global Privacy Regulations

Many domain registrars operating cross-border have to deal with complex privacy and data protection laws. Whilst we have ICANN to govern the internet and domain name system, the governance of best practice privacy protection is close to non-existing. Well, we have the easy-understandable GDPR dont we?

Companies that are working to become GDPR compliant have all realized what a giant task it was and continues to be. Just take a look at this infographic, portraying just how complex the international privacy laws look.

Its not easy, often not with a straight yes or no answer. Complexity is rising as technology advances, more trade is done internationally and governments all over the world are now upgrading data privacy and protection laws.

Governments are trying hard to catch up with technology by passing new privacy laws on an ongoing basis, but the inconsistency between them brings a great risk of non-compliance and confusion among international businesses. Every country, every state, and every province has their own privacy law. Moreover, the definition and the scope of personal data protection varies among them.

Unlike with other fundamental rights, there is a lack of global regulations and best practices about privacy protection. Due to this, it is difficult to provide governments with the necessary direction in creating and enacting new privacy laws.

Should You Buy Godaddy Domain Privacy Or Not

Remember that the purpose of this Godaddy review is not to tell you what to do. I just want to share you what my personal experience has been buying domains online to create websites.

NOTE: I am not a Goddady affiliate nor employee so I have absolutely nothing to gain by telling you to buy it.

Although I have purchased many domains at Godaddy in the past, I made a few changes. Why? The reason is because Godaddy is NOT the cheapest place NOR the only place that offers domain privacy protection for clients.

Including learnanet.com, I own about 30 other domains, many of which I have purchased on Godaddy. The great majority of them have domain privacy while a few others do not have the yearly feature.

However, it is definitely a good feature to have on your domains from the get-go to have that extra peace of mind, decrease spam emails and unsolicited sales calls.

Remember that when you select this option upon checkout, your information will be kept private on the public domain. Godaddy will display their info and then forward any inquiries to your contact email on file if some wants to contact you.

Now that you know what to expect from Godaddy domain privacy protection, recently I decided to STOP buying domains at Godaddy! Say what what??

YES, you read it right! I STOPPED buying them at Godaddy.

Although I started out buying my domains initially on Godaddy, I recently discovered something AMAZING!

    1. Do not use a web host as a domain registrar

    2. Always use two-factor authentication

    3. Ensure that domain locking is active

    4. WHOIS protection should be active

    Anyone can

    5. Password protection best practice should always be used

    • Using a strong password that contains at least eight characters and uses a combination of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
    • Changing passwords every three months.
    • Never share passwords and other login details with anyone.

    6. Look out for phishing red flags

    • The email is poorly written and riddled with grammatical errors that a native speaker would not make
    • Suspicious attachments or links
    • A seemingly urgent request

    7. Keep domain contact details current

Protect The Confidentiality Of Your Personal Information

Domain Privacy protects the contact information of the owner of a domain name in the WHOIS directory. Normally, this public database is used to verify the availability of a domain name and who it belongs to, but marketing companies and scammers can also exploit it for other purposes, like sending spam or identity theft.

What Is Whois And Why Is It Important

WHOIS may look like an acronym, but it is actually a collection of information that relates to the owner of a domain. This information includes the owners full name, email address, physical address, phone number, and administrative and technical contacts.

All of this personal information is made publicly available for the world to see, including identity thieves, spammers and more threats.

If you do not wish to have this information readily available, registrars can hide this for a fee. This works by replacing your personal information with information about their company.

    Godaddy Dedicated Server Hosting

Okay, if you want the absolute best performance possible, its time to look at dedicated hosting. So youll lease the entire server, and will get complete control over the data, security and configuration.

    DS-32
    GoDaddy.com/Hosting/Dedicated

    GoDaddy Dedicated Server Hosting notes:

    • You can boost your storage to use SSD NVMe on all plans, which is meant to be up to 25 faster. The prices go up to $139.99, $179.99, $319.99 and $419.99. However, storage is reduced to 2 x 500 GB on DS -32 and 64, and to 2 x 1TB on DS-128 and 256.
    • The prices above are all for servers with no control panels. Its also possible to pay around $20-30 extra a month for a cPanel or Plesk Web Host Edition with CentOS 7 and preinstalled software like Apache Web Server, MySQL, PHP and more.
    • You also get discounts for 24-month plans, and the discount gets reapplied at renewal.

At this stage, its all about tailoring the plan to your technical requirements, so its very hard to recommend a plan. But GoDaddy does have hosting specialists available, so its definitely worth calling them to ask about precise needs.

    Domain Extensions And Search Tools

I really like it when a domain registrar makes it easy for you to take advantage of all the different domain extensions available. Basically, you are looking at two things:

  • How many different TLDs do they offer?
  • How easy is it to search for domain names?
  • Every domain registrar on my list offers the familiar TLDs like .com, but some offer a larger selection of alternative TLDs. There are hundreds of new TLDs, like .online, .blog, and even .ninja.

This is great for people starting new sites because, as you can imagine, most of the desirable domain names are already taken for the .com extension.

A great place to check for a bargain deal on one of the newer TLDs is Namecheap. They run promotional pricing for domains as low as $0.99/year:

    Thats a steal right there.

With new TLDs, you want to pick something thats going to age well and makes sense with your business. Just keep searching until you find one that works.

Be aware that not all domain registrars offer the same selection of TLDs. As a random example, Bluehost doesnt offer .theater, but Google Domains does. NameSilo offers both .theater and .theatre, whereas Google doesnt have the British spelling.

Speaking of searching for an available domain name, some companies make it really easy. You can use this search tool from Bluehost to check if the domain you want is available:

My Advice On Domain Privacy Protection

If youre working on a very tight budget, I would recommend not signing up for privacy protection until you start generating more income when you can later afford it. You could end up getting spammed by unethical marketing companies but just keep in mind that you dont have to respond to any offer that you dont want to answer. Instead, you can block their telephone number or email address. Additionally, you can provide them with an email account that you dont check that much therefore you dont see all the spam.

However, if you have the money I would recommend signing up for privacy protection. As I mentioned above, its usually going to cost $2.99 to $7.99 a year depending on what registrar you use. A lot of companies will give you domain privacy protection for free for the first year, but make sure you cancel it the next year if you dont want to pay for it. Will typically be a small business expense that will save you lots of time dealing with unsolicited spam.

For me, its worth it to use privacy protection otherwise my cell phone would ring all day long with sales calls. If you are not using domain privacy right now and are getting spammed, I would highly recommend purchasing it. I didnt use it for three years, but finally got sick and tired of the spam I received. Also, your email spam will be greatly reduced if you have privacy protection.

Reasons Why You Should Avoid Godaddy

    Brett

GoDaddy is the worlds largest web host and domain registrar.

If youre not familiar with web hosting or domain registrars, heres a quick Web Hosting and Domain Registration explainer.

GoDaddy also happens to spend a lot of money on advertising.

Theyve purchased Super Bowl Ads, sponsored NASCAR drivers and according to their Company Annual Report, they spent over $253 million on Marketing and Advertising in 2017.

So when non-technical people want to build a website, often GoDaddy is the first name that comes to mind.

However, theyre often not the best choice.

And Im about to tell you why.

As a developer who has worked with a variety of different clients, Ive seen time and time again the ways that GoDaddy fails to bring value to a business.

Plus, theyre a pretty unethical company. But Ill get to that at the end.

So lets begin. Here are my 4 reasons why you should avoid GoDaddy at all costs.

Why You Might Want To Choose Ultimate Privacy & Protection:

If you dont have any security plans for your website, a basic Malware scan is a good to have. I imagine that you have security plans, and they can include GoDaddy, but I must admit that there are more affordable providers out there. If youre not interested in doing any backend integration at all though, GoDaddy is very convenient.

I think that these extra options are largely optional. While some of them offer additional piece of mind, and require no additional setup on your part, almost all of them can be achieved by other means either for less money or free. I do stand by my opinion above about the spam filter and additional redaction on the WHOIS directory, so I will personally be keeping the Full Domain Privacy & Protection once the term on the Ultimate one I bought for this blog post runs out, but I think there are people out there who could do just fine without. At the end of the day, I hope I have given you enough information to make up your own mind about it.

Please let me know what I can do to improve this article if you have any advice. I spent many hours trying to find this information and even a couple of hours over a few conversations chatting with customer service.

I hope you found this useful, and if you did, I would love for you to share it with your communities that might find this information useful too.
