Use The Right Domain Name Extensions
When you choose your domain name extension, you can be sure of one thing: .com is still the best.
According to research from Domain Name Stat, 43% of all domains have the .com extension.
Why? Well, .com is the most familiar and easiest to remember.
While there are many successful websites with a .net and .org, your website will probably do better if it has a .com extension. Its the safest bet.
Our advice: Go with .com. If thats taken, try .net or .org. If these are taken too, youd be better off brainstorming a new domain name. And oh! Avoid those weird extensions like .club, .space, .pizza and so on.
How Do I Get A Free Domain Name
Nobody really gives out a domain name for free online without getting something in return.
Fortunately, many website builders will offer you a free domain name registration when you purchase, say, an annual plan.
Of course, after that first year expires, youll be forced to pay the fee for the annual domain name renewal. Sometimes, the site will bug you to renew the domain through their own renewal service, which is priced at say, $15 per year instead of the usual $10 or so fee. If thats the case, then dont be afraid to buy your domain through a third party site.
Unless you win a contest, or get a domain through a friend, theres no way to get a free domain name online without paying at least something in return.
What Are Domain Name Extensions
You can choose among popular top-level domain extensions such as:
Or go with a local domain extension such as if you want to focus on building a presence in a specific country:
Also, theres a bunch of creative domain extensions, launched recently. You can try playing around with them to create a shorter, brandable name. For example:

Short Is Better Than Long
In general, when it comes to the length of your domain, shorter is better.
According to research from DataGenetics.com, a blog by Nick Berry, the most common name length is approximately 12 characters.
All of this data shows that you should keep your domain name concise.
Aim for 6-14 characters and remember the shorter, the better. Most likely the shorter domain names are taken a LONG time ago and sold for thousands of dollars. If you cant find something short, make it brandable.
Our own site websitesetup.org is exactly 12 characters.

Avoid Hyphens And Numbers
Remember how your domain name should be easy to spell and pronounce? Hyphens and numbers make it more difficult.
Imagine explaining Facebook if it had a hyphen in there
Have you seen this new site Face-Book? Theres a hyphen in there by the way, between the Face and the Book.
Facebook might not have spread so quickly if that was the case.
The bottom line? Your domain name should be smooth and punchy hyphens and numbers get in the way of that.
Stick to the letters!

Be Creative With Your Domain Name
Creative and brandable domain names are vastly better than their generic counterparts.
Generic domain names blend in with all the other blogs and businesses providing similar offerings. In addition to being tacky, they are often stuffed with keywords in an ill-advised attempt to game Googles search algorithm.
On the flip side, by having a creative, brandable domain name, youll rise above all the noise and start creating a name that folks will be able to easily recall and recognize.

Choose One Or More Keywords That Represent Your Site
There are a lot of ways to start generating ideas for a domain name. You can simply base your sites domain on your own name, or on your existing business. However, a key ingredient of a truly effective domain name is a strong keyword.
Using keywords in your domain name is smart for the same reasons using them in your content is. The SEO benefits can bring in more traffic by helping your site rank more highly in search engine results. Plus, keywords can help potential visitors better understand your sites focus and niche.
Fortunately, the process of researching keywords for your domain name is the same as finding effective keywords for other uses. You can use tools like and KWFinder to search for terms that have both a high search volume and low competition. Just remember that in this case, youre looking for a keyword that represents your website and content as a whole.

Get A Free Domain Name With A Website Builder
Another way to get a free domain name is to pay for a plan with a blogging site that offers a domain name as part of their package plan.
A few website builders that include a free domain name with the purchase of one of their premium plans include:
These website builders do offer a free domain name, but you will still be paying for a plan in order to reap the benefit.
While this is one way to get a free domain name for your blog, it isnt the one that I would choose for new or experienced bloggers.
Website builders certainly have their benefitstheyre easy to use, everythings included, and no coding experience is needed. Many bloggers choose Wix or WordPress.com so they dont have to take care of any of the backend work.
The appeal of website builders is obvious, but I wouldnt personally recommend them over WordPress.org. In case you arent familiar, there are two versions of WordPress.
WordPress.com is a hosting service that uses the WordPress software to create a blog or website. WordPress.org is a free CMS that powers blogs and websites. You can learn more about it on my guide What is WordPress?.
Other website builders may be easier to get started with than WordPress.org, but they lack the customization and freedom you get with WordPress.
WordPress is free to use, and it allows you to do virtually anything you want with your blog.

Assert Your Rights If You Already Own The Trademark
If you are already in business and want to use your existing business name as your domain name, then you may have the upper hand in a dispute with someone who’s already using the name online.
Under trademark law, the first person to use a trademark in commerce is considered the owner. So if you used the name to market your products or services before the domain name registrant started using its domain name, you may be able to prevent that registrant from continuing to use the name.
If you are a trademark holder and you want to challenge the use of a domain name, you will first need to decide on a strategy for going after the registrant. You currently have three choices:
Use the dispute resolution procedure offered by ICANN. ICANN, the international nonprofit organization now in charge of domain name registrations worldwide, recently implemented a process called the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy . This administrative procedure works only for cybersquatting disputes — that is, when someone has registered your name in a bad-faith attempt to profit from your trademark. Compared with filing a lawsuit, ICANN’s dispute resolution procedure is potentially less expensive and quicker .
File a cybersquatting lawsuit. If you take a cybersquatter to court and win, you may get not only the domain name you want, you could also win money damages from the cybersquatter.
