Why Pay For Email
The big benefit, as we said, is that you get your own custom email address based on the domain that you register, such as . In addition, you can add other email addresses as you need them, with < any name> @youdomainname.com yours to use. It means no more endlessly typing in usernames only to find that theyve already been taken, as you do with the free services.
Once you pay for your email, youll not longer get swamped with adverts as you do with Google and Microsoft accounts. Thats a better use experience overall and makes sending and receiving email a lot less invasive.
Next, if you were using the free email that comes with your ISP, you cant change provider without losing your account. Once youve signed up for your own email address, you can switch ISP as many times as you like, keeping the same email address.
Which Provider To Choose
When choosing a custom domain provider, opt for one that has a range of global domains available in its system . This is especially important if youre targeting customers in a specific region, as having a customized domain will increase your chances of showing up on the first search engine results page .
Even if youre not targeting customers in a specific region, its always a good idea to trust a domain provider that has that option available. You might decide to grow your business in the future and expand, so having a provider with global domain options is super convenient.
We like to think were a great example of a provider with a wide range of global domains that can be used to target communities all over the world. From African and Middle Eastern domains to American domains, theres something to suit every business.

How Should You Set Up An Email Account With Your Domain Name
Lets get this out of the way first: Your best option for setting up an email with your own domain is to use an externally hosted email service.
An externally hosted email service will handle everything for you, offering the security and reliability that are crucial when dealing with email.
The best externally hosted email service is Googles G Suite. G Suite offers Gmail-style email along with a calendar, a document editor, and online storage — all on your own domain from $5 per user per month. Well show you everything you need to know to set up G Suite later in this guide.
If youre trying to keep costs down, external email hosting service Zoho offers many similar features to G Suite, but with the option of opening a basic account free of charge. This guide will also cover everything you need to set up Zoho later on.
You may have noticed your hosting provider also offers free email services. Indeed, most shared hosts, such as SiteGround, DreamHost, and Bluehost offer free email at your domain out of the box . These are okay as a temporary solution while youre starting out, but we dont recommend them for the long term: . For instance, you wont get the two-factor authentication that will keep your email safe, and unreliable spam settings can cause you to miss important business while failing to catch actual spam. Youll also experience limited storage, and typically have to use poorly designed desktop and mobile user interfaces.
Is A Free Email Domain Worth It
A free email domain can be worth it if it reflects your websites domain name. If you have to choose a random email ending, it will do little to distinguish your address from hotmail.com, yahoo.com, gmail.com or similar. Therefore, we recommend checking to see if your website hosting provider enables you to fully customize your domain and retain your company branding.

Alternative Hosted Email Services
G Suite and Zoho are the best overall options for hosted email services. If convenience and ease of use are your top priorities, then email provided by your web host is fine too. There are, however, plenty of competing hosted email services. These typically offer something unique in terms of features or cost, so, while they may not be the best option for everyone, if you need what they specifically offer, they may be the best option for you. The email hosts below offer something different.
If youre intent on using Outlook Exchange to manage your emails, Rackspace is your best bet. This service allows you to use their own app for $2 per user per month, or integrate with Outlook Exchange for $7.99 per user per month. For that higher price, youll get a massive 100GB mailbox and the ability to send attachments up to 50MB. Rackspace is also designed for full compatibility with Outlook, allowing you to sync shared calendars, global address lists, tasks, and, of course, emails, across devices. Other helpful features, such as anti-spam and anti-virus scans, make Rackspace a solid choice for enterprise businesses.
Activate Gmail For Your Google Workspace Account
The final step is to activate Gmail for your Google Workspace accounts.
On the page, youll see the following MX records:
- aspmx.l.google.com / priority = 1
- alt3.aspmx.l.google.com / priority = 10
- alt4.aspmx.l.google.com / priority = 10
Youll need to open a new tab and go to your hosts DNS tool, or re-open the DNS tool tab from earlier.
Typically, you would need to copy and paste manually, but not with Kinsta. Since we are big fans of Google Workspace, we have created a one-click solution for helping our customers setting this up quickly.
The MX records, like nameservers, are the same, regardless of the user, so you dont have to change anything. Press the Add 5 records button to proceed.
Since it can take some time for the changes to go live, you can take a tea or coffee break before continuing.
Alternative Method For Other Hosts
For other hosts, youd need to access your DNS tool, for example, through logging into your cPanel and opening DNS Zone Editor.
Select the appropriate domain, and then click the Add Record button to open a new window.
Fill out the appropriate priority and then copy and paste the destination. Double-check that everything is correct, and click Add Record to complete. Repeat the process for the four alternative MX destinations.
If your host has email enabled by default, you might need to remove existing MX records.

How To Set Up And Use Your Shared Hosts Email Service With Your Domain Name
Many web hosting providers also offer free email services. As weve discussed, these dont offer the same reliability or security found with dedicated email providers. If youre just starting out or emailing occasionally, however, the ease of use of web hosts’ email services make them a good choice.
Most web hosts offering email services are shared hosts, and use an industry-standard hosting dashboard called cPanel. Well walk through how to set up email at your domain using our favorite shared host, SiteGround. The steps will, however, be very similar for other hosting providers using cPanel.
Start by logging in to SiteGround and heading to My Accounts Information & Settings Access cPanel. Now, click the Email Accounts icon. Fill in the email, password and mailbox quota for the new account, then click the Create Account button at the bottom. Youve now got an email account on your own domain!
There are no domain settings to set up here if your domain is also registered with SiteGround and you havent changed any of the defaults. If youre using a domain registered with any other registrar and pointed at SiteGround, youll need to set the MX records as follows:

Enable Gmail To Work With Your Custom Domain Email
This option allows you to enjoy all the great features that come with a regular Gmail account while sending emails from your email domain for free. Before you can do this, youll need to first have email hosting from a provider that allows email forwarding . Once youve done that, youll sign up with Gmail, forward the emails to that account, and enable Gmail to send as your custom domain email address.
You can then immediately start using your new, professional email address for your startup, blog, business website, or nonprofit. Without a doubt, this is your best option for setting up a custom domain email address for free. This process may sound complicated, but its really not, and I will walk you through it below, step-by-step.
What if you dont have an email hosting plan? In this case, you can move on to option 2 below, which will cost you a few dollars each month for email hosting, or you can transfer your domain to a web hosting provider that offers free email hosting and lets you forward your emails. I personally recommend Bluehost web hosting since theyre inexpensive and make it really easy to transfer your domain to them from another provider. Once youve done this, you can move on to setting up your custom domain with Gmail as described below.
How To Set Up G Suite With Your Own Domain
G Suite, formerly known as Google Apps, lets you use Googles productivity suite — including Gmail, Docs, Calendar, and Drive — with your own domain name. Even if youre only interested in the email, G Suite is by far the best solution available for setting up an email account with your own domain.
G Suite offers a number of features that its competitors cant match:
- Reliability: Essentially, you wont need to worry. Your email is always going to work youll receive all emails sent to you, and the deliverability of emails youre sending others will be excellent as well.
- Security and privacy: Google obviously takes this very seriously, and you get all of the security benefits Google uses for all of its products. You also get reliable two-factor authentication.
- Spam prevention: Gmails spam prevention and machine learning are the best offered by any email service. With G Suite, you get to use this for your domains email.
- 24/7 support: This isnt a game-changing offer, but the advantage of using a company of Googles size is obvious when it comes to support — you can phone someone at any time of the day and get an answer.
G Suite is more expensive than its competitors, but at $5 per user per month, its not going to break the bank. This is the best option if you need a serious email to go with your domain name.
Setting up G Suite to provide email with your domain name requires a couple of steps: Registering for G Suite and setting up your domain.
