What Is The Safest Way To Search For Domain Names Availability

How To Check Domain Name Search Availability

Lockedlocked

I am victim of Domain name front running. I searched for domain names on some sites & I lost those names soon.

Now, what is the safest way to search for availability of domain names ? Using

nslookup -type=ns domain.com

is a way that I found, though I am not sure this is 100% safe or safest possible!?

Wait For The Domain Name To Expire

If youre in no hurry to have the domain you want today, another option is to wait for it to expire. When it does, it may become a dropped domain. This means that the owners havent paid to renew it, so it will go up for auction.

Waiting for a domain to expire may seem passive, but you need to be prepared for when it does. To get an estimate for when you might be able to make a bid, you can visit WHOis.net to see if the domain has changed hands recently.

One unfortunate side effect of waiting for a domain is that if you need to get your site online now, you may need to work on re-branding after you change the name. Doing so can be a time-consuming process, and one that might impact your search rankings.

However, there are ways to alleviate those problems, such as by setting up a redirect to your sites new address. Plus, if you dont actually need the domain right away, theres no harm in waiting to see if it becomes available. Keep in mind that most domains renew on a yearly basis, although some site owners may pay for multiple years in advance.

Whats The Difference Between A Domain Name And Web Hosting

Your domain name is like your address and your web hosting is like the house that you live in. If you want to launch a website then youll need both a domain name, which people can use to find you, and a web host, which stores the actual website.

Domain names and web hosting have a sort of symbiotic relationship, like software and hardware or yin and yang. While its technically possible to have one without the other, they work best when theyre working together, which is why many web hosts offer domain name registration and why many registrars offer hosting.

You can separate the two, of course, and register a domain name through one company and buy hosting from another. But its usually more time-consuming not to mention more expensive so why bother?

How Do I Choose The Best Domain Name

Great question! Here’s a few core things to consider when choosing your new domain name:

  • Choose a name that’s creative and unique. This may be the differentiation needed to stand out amongst competitors. Take a domain name like BeanStreet.coffee, for example.
  • Keep your name easy to remember as well. The sweet spot is ideally one or two words that capture the essence of your website. CoffeeLove.club is easier to remember than CoffeeAndCaffeineAddicts.com, for example.
  • If you’re a local business, consider adding your region to your domain name, such as .nyc or .asia, to help your site’s visibility.
  • Consider buying more than one domain. As your site’s popularity increases, you don’t want copycats to purchase similar domains before you do.
  • And lastly, avoid numbers, hyphens, or symbols of any kind.
  • Please Don’t Do This Below:

I can’t figure out how to check the availability of a whole set of domains that match criteria, like XXXYYY.Z. where X is any 3 letters, Y is any 3 numbers, and Z is any of com, org, or io.

The reason is: it would means testing the availability of 52728000 individual domain names, an unrealistic number of requests, even for DNS services rather than Whois services.

    The arithmetic behind:

    • XXX where X is any 3 letters: 26 letters 26×26×26=17576 combinations
    • YYY where Y is any 3 numbers: 10 numbers 10×10×10=1000 combinations
    • Z where Z is any of com, org, or io: 3 TLDs 3 combinations

    XXXYYY.Z: 17576×1000×3 52728000 combinations

Lets figure this volume of domains with using loops rather than whole Bash bracket expressions to generate them, because it would not fit into memory with bracket-exp only:

#!/usr/bin/env bashfor Z in do for YYY in do for XXX in do printf '%s%s.%s\n' "$XXX" "$YYY" "$Z" done donedone

Avoid Numbers Hyphens And Other Characters

A memorable site name can go a long way towards helping your site gain traction. One quick way to make things more difficult is by adding hyphens or numbers to your domain name.

Hyphens not only make it more difficult to pass on your domain, but itll probably lead to a lot of misspellings and people not being able to find your site.

For example, whats easier to remember and type into your browser? C-N-N.com or CNN.com. Or how about Face-book.com, or Facebook.com?

The same goes for numbers. Adding numbers to your domain can come across as spammy and much more difficult to pass on.

How Much Does It Cost To Get A Domain Name

How to Search Available Domain Name

The cost of a domain name can vary significantly, depending on several different factors. Here are a few things to consider when thinking about how much your domain name will cost:

Type of extension: The cost of acquiring a domain name can be heavily impacted by the TLD itself. For example, a promotionally priced .cyou domain may cost less than US $5.99/1st year, while a more exclusive TLD like a .inc can be priced in the thousands. Prices can also be impacted by the domain registry, any discounts at the time, along with the operator of the domain. The most popular and familiar domain extensions tend to fall somewhere within CA$20/year to CA$50/year.

Promos & Term: Domain names are sold as annual renewals, not dissimilar to subscriptions. If youre looking to get a domain over a multi-year term, be sure to consider the annual renewal price as well. Often domain names are sold at a discount for the first year, with the price of renewal being significantly higher. Consider the total cost of ownership when committing to a domain.

Availability: If youre looking to get a domain that is already taken, the cost of acquisition can vary significantly from seller to seller. In cases where youd like to acquire a domain thats been taken, enlist a domain broker to get an accurate valuation of any aftermarket domains youre hoping to acquire.

    What Is A Domain Name

A domain name is a bit like your physical address in that its how people find you out there on the World Wide Web. Thats why we call the bar at the top of a web browser the address bar – its where you enter a domain name to find a website.

If a domain name is like your address then the server your website is hosted on is like the physical building. When you create a website, you set your domain name to point to your server so that if people want to find your website, they can enter your domain name and itll take them straight there. Without a domain name, visitors would have to enter the IP address of your server.

Pretty much every website that you visit uses a domain name. Google.com is a domain name, for example. Facebook is the name of the website and Facebook.com is their domain name.

Domain names come in all shapes and sizes, but the one thing that they all have in common is that theyre made of two parts – the label and the top-level domain . A huge variety of top-level domain extensions are available, from country codes to specific codes for sectors like .gov for government organisations and .edu for educational institutions.

Should I Register More Than One Domain

Yes! Registering multiple domain names protects your brand from domain squatters or copycats who may try to register alternative versions of your domain. For example, if you own coffeelovers.com, you may want to consider registering coffeelovers.net and coffeelovers.org as well. You may want to consider misspelled versions of your domain name too.

Why Do You Need A Domain Name

There are several reasons for this, the most obvious being that its good for branding. Nothing looks more unprofessional than a brand that hosts its website at brandname.wordpress.com. This is because as a general rule, the websites that buy and maintain a domain name tend to be those that are more reputable and more established.

But your domain name is so much more than that. Often, the reason why people start a website in the first place is so that theres something they have full control over. When you use social networking sites or free blogging providers, or even if you make a living selling on Amazon and eBay, youre fully reliant on those other sites. If they change their terms of service or the service goes down completely, youre in trouble.

When youve registered a domain name, though, you dont have to rely on anyone else. That domain name belongs to you and you alone, and you have full control over what you do with it. You can control any associated email addresses, determine which server the site accesses and even sell it or transfer ownership if thats what you want to do.
