A domain name is a valuable asset for a website or brand in this digital world. Choosing the best domain name is the first step of developing a website. Alternative To Parking Your Domain With Your Registrar
If you don’t want to park a domain at your registrar’s default parking page, but you’re not ready to develop a website for it yet, oneway is to do what I do.
Although my main domains are placed onweb hosts I trust, I also have web hostingaccounts on other web hosts for my playsites, including one that offers virtually “unlimited” everything. For reasons given in the articleThe Myth of “Unlimited” in WebHosting, I don’t really rely on such “unlimited” web hosts for anything serious. But, in my opinion, they are useful for one majorthing: unlimited domain hosting for my test sites. Manyof them allow you to place an unlimited number of domains/websites on a single account.
In view of this, whenever I get a domain name that I think I might want to develop in the future, Ibuy it andpoint it tomy account at that web host. It doesn’t cost me anything to point it there since that account allows me to host asmany domains as I want at no extra charge. I simply create a blank page for those domains.
You don’t have to follow my example, of course. I’m just explaining what I do, as a personal choice.

Domain Parking is a process wherein you as an owner of the domain name can retain the domain name without hosting a functional website on it. In simple words, you can reserve your domain for future use with a work in progress or an under construction page.
Having covered what is a parked domain the next logical question that comes to mind is, why to use domain parking. There are several reasons why domain name owners would like to park their domain, let us see some of them:
A Few Words Before You Go
The power and potential of parked domains is out there but it does depend on your own needs whether you should actually get one. A parked domain is a great way to save a domain for later use, create a useful alias for an existing website, or prevent cybersquatters from taking advantage of your hard-earned traffic.
While you can purchase and park multiple domains to monetize through reselling, keep in mind that this isnt as lucrative as it was in the early days of the internet, when there were plenty of cheap domains up for grabs whose value eventually skyrocketed. That being said, there are always exceptions to the rule.

Buying A Parked Domain
The best part about parked domains is that you don’t need extra work to make them profitable.
Because of this, parked domains are a great way to make extra cash off an otherwise unused asset.
If you go this route, buy a generic domain name that doesn’t include your company name or product.
This way, you have the most options for monetizing it.
Why You Need A Parked Domain
As mentioned, a parked domain doesnt link to a functional website. But since youve reserved it, it means that it is yours. Granted, holding a parked domain until youre ready to launch your website may be costly, but the benefits of having a good domain secured outweigh the costs. With your domain name in the bag, you can focus on other aspects, such as marketing your website when it goes live. You can start researching topics such as whether its best to use Squarespace vs WordPress for SEO, and how much to budget for your advertising costs.
Well quickly mention that a parked domain serves other uses aside from reserving a valuable name while you get your ducks in a row. You can use it as a secondary domain to direct people to your primary website. Many business owners adopt this practice of purchasing multiple parked domains with similar names. The idea is to take advantage of sloppy typers who might misspell the original domain names.
You could also buy a domain, park it, and sell it at a higher price to someone looking for that exact name in the future. After all, its now clear how domain names are undoubtedly valuable commodities. Its also possible to park an active domain, but this usually happens if you no longer want to keep your website active. In this case, you can easily park your website domain until it expires.

This option requires that you have hosting services for your primary domain. Most providers will allow you to designate any number of parked domains and specify how they should be handled, with one option being to automatically display the site thats associated with the primary domain.

How To Park A Domain
If you want to park a domain, either to save it for later or to utilize it as an alias, the process is similar to securing a normal domain.
First, check whether your desired domain is available to be purchased. The simplest way to do this is by entering the domain in your browser bar. If theres no website associated with the domain, the domain name might be available, or it may already be parked.
So, a good next step is to conduct a WHOIS lookup. The ICANN lookup tool will tell you if a domain is owned, who owns it, and other potentially useful information if you want to acquire the domain from someone else.
And thats it! If youre just holding onto the domain for now, you can keep it parked as long as you renew your ownership of the domain. When youre ready, you can link the domain to your active website.
Reserve The Name For Later
One of the main reasons for getting a parked domain is saving it for later use. You know you want to build a website, and youve found the perfect domain name but youre not quite ready to publish it, or even to get started on it. However, you also dont want anyone snatching up your perfect domain name by the time you do. So what do you do? Purchase, register, and park that domain. You can direct it to your hosting account when its ready to go live.
