Does anyone have experience with .ly domain names? I’d love one for my personal site but have ran into some issues. So I am an American and .ly domains are owned by the country of Libya. That was the first red flag for me. The second is that there is no anonymous registration. The faq says:
“We dont have this service included at the time being, but we are working to add it soon. However, you do not have to supply a private address or phone number for the contact persons registered on the domain. It is sufficient to supply contact information for the organisation, as long as the contact person can be reached by email.”
The domain name I have in mind would be perfect for my personal site but i’m wary of the no anonymous registration. Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to acquire a .ly domain name as safely as possible? Or should I completely avoid it? Thanks for your help.

It provides a small selection of internet hosting plans, although namecheap built its foundations on domain name registration. Founded in 2000, the firm is eager to emphasise its ethos: it says its a solid obligation to a commitment as well as support not to bombard clients with advertising messages. Namecheap is located in La, and Richard Kirkendall, its own creator, still acts as CEO. Matthew Russell was accountable for setting up the hosting department of the firm in 2006 and is the vice president of hosting. Its hosting section is thus significantly newer than its domain name arm, also it is so not pretty large, it cannot offer phone support, for instance.

Interwar Period And The Second Libyan Civil War
Following the defeat of loyalist forces, Libya was torn among numerous rival, armed militias affiliated with distinct regions, cities and tribes, while the central government had been weak and unable to effectively exert its authority over the country. Competing militias pitted themselves against each other in a political struggle between Islamist politicians and their opponents. On 7 July 2012, Libyans held their first parliamentary elections since the end of the former regime. On 8 August, the officially handed power over to the wholly-elected , which was then tasked with the formation of an interim government and the drafting of a new to be approved in a general .
On 25 August 2012, in what Reuters reported as “the most blatant sectarian attack” since the end of the civil war, unnamed organized assailants bulldozed a mosque with graves, in broad daylight in the center of the Libyan capital . It was the second such razing of a Sufi site in two days. Numerous acts of vandalism and destruction of heritage were carried out by suspected Islamist militias, including the removal of the and the destruction and desecration of World War II-era British grave sites near Benghazi. Many other cases of heritage vandalism were reported to be carried out by Islamist-related radical militias and mobs that either destroyed, robbed, or looted a number of historic sites.
On 23 October 2020, a permanent ceasefire was signed to end the war.
Renew Your Registration On Time
At this point, youll have a domain name registered and ready to go. However, your registration is only valid for the time period that you selected, which is usually one year by default. After that year expires, youll need to renew your domain name to continue using it.
Some registrars hold onto your domain name for a period of time before auctioning it off. As we mentioned, NameCheap offers nearly a month grace period to renew. Most domain registrars will notify you by email at the 30- and 7-day mark before expiration, and you should think carefully before letting a renewal period lapse. Domains can be difficult to reclaim once theyve expired.
The best way to keep on top of this is to set up automatic renewals. In fact, youll often find that its set by default. In our opinion, you probably dont want to auto-renew all of your domains, but for the most important and permanent, letting your registrar handle renewals is going to save you a potential headache down the line.

Weve briefly mentioned it already, but your TLD can also become key to your choice of domain. This is the ending to your website, such as .com, .biz, .org, .io, and hundreds more.
Many people choose .com because its the most popular. However, you may be more likely to find the exact domain name youre looking for using one of the other options.

Why Choose A Ly Domain Extension
Everyone has a .com, .org, or .net website. These common extensions have been used since the early days of the Internet. With more unique options available, why get lost in the shuffle? The .ly domain extension offers a breath of fresh air to an otherwise congested market. Its viewed as the more youthful alternative to standard extensions. As a result, more and more companies are using it to target a younger audience.
Tech-savvy individuals will instantly recognize it thanks to popular social media platforms. You can use this to your advantage to attract new customers or clients to your website. If people use a search engine to find more information about something in your industry, they will be more inclined to click on your link with a unique domain such as .ly.
It even has its place off the internet. Many companies utilize the extension as part of their overall brand. They cater their company name and logo to the domain, allowing them to use it in their advertisements and products. This marketing technique builds more trust between you and your customers while creating a sense of familiarity they will continually follow.

What You Didn’t Know About Ly Tv Sy And Other Foreign Domain Names
Because of this, the owner of a foreign ccTLD takes on some risk that the site could go down if something catastrophic happens where the domain is registered. But in most cases there are safeguards in place, and Libya is the latest example of how foreign domain name owners really have little to fear. During the recent crisis there, owners of .LY domain names – which is one of the most popular endings among American startups – got jittery. Levi Rosol, founder of Craft.ly, a Des Moines, Iowa-based startup that aims to be a marketplace for handmade goods, said that his team had a plan to minimize the length of time their site would have gone down if they lost their registration. But thankfully, Plan B wasnt necessary because Libya’s system also has servers in the United States and the Netherlands. After the Internet in Libya was shut down at the end of February, there was widespread concern that the most well-known American .LY site, Bit.ly, would also go down. But it didnt. In response the concern, the company made it clear on its site that service had never been interrupted and also put forth some information about its purchase of the .LY domain name.

To choose one, first look at the companys pricing structure. Most offer a years domain registration for a certain price and discounts over a longer period. How Can Ionos Afford To Offer Free Domains
First of all, IONOS is not a free domain name service provider in general. We usually have very competitive pricing for our domain customers however, you will not be able to enjoy free domains all the time. The reason we can occasionally give away domains at little or no cost is that our large customer base enables us to attract a lot of registries that work with us.
One example of such cooperation might be a registry that launches a new TLD but does not intend to do all of the marketing and sales activities by themselves. Nevertheless they would like to see quick growth in their user base and to reach this goal they give IONOS very attractive offers. Then, for example, we can sometimes offer free domain registration.
On the one hand, this is a great opportunity for our customers to benefit from fantastic offers, on the other hand it can evoke the wrong impression about the hosting industry in general. In the long run, it is impossible to offer free domain name registration and cheap web hosting services at a high quality level.
