How To Setup Google Domains Email Forwarding (email alias tutorial)

Though it seems like most of Google Workspace’s features are available for free, its enterprise-level features are not. These include shared calendars, advanced admin controls , two-step verification, optional unlimited cloud storage, and data migration tools to help you transfer valuable data to Google Workspace.

In 2019, Google increased its Google Workspace pricing for its Basic and Business packages. The move was in response to Microsoft Office 365 price changes.

There are three Google Workspace pricing packages:

  • Basic priced at $6 per user per month
  • Business priced at $12 per user per month
  • Enterprise priced at $25 per user per month

    Well, to be honest, there is a lot to like about Gmail a simple and friendly interface, good spam filtering, and much more, but the one main advantage of importing your domain email address into Gmail is the ample email storage space you get from Gmail.

    If you have a lot of emails that you dont delete, you could be maxing out your domain email storage quota.

    When you import your domain email account into Gmail, you are essentially downloading a copy of your domain email messages into your Gmail account. This setup allows you to:

    • Access your emails from any browser, any device, anywhere. You can even install the iOS and Android Gmail apps on your phone all settings will be auto-synced, so you dont have to re-import your domain email account into your mobile phone or device.
    • Store all your emails in your Gmail account instead of using up your domain mail server storage space
    • Take advantage of Googles uptime and stability as an online-storage solution for your domain emails

    But do keep in mind that Gmail is a product of Google, so if there should be any problems or if you need help with your Gmail account, you will need to contact Google for assistance. Doteasy will not be able to give you assistance as in-depth as Google would, afterall, Gmail is not our product.

    Help How Do I Get Google Domains Email Forwarding To Work With Cloudflare Dns

    I recently setup CloudFlare to speed up traffic for our wordpress site. While doing it, I broke email forwarding. Here are the steps I took:

    Before CloudFlare:

    • I configured Google Domains, our domain registrar, to do email forwarding
    • I used Google Domains DNS to forward all http requests to our wordpress hostStatus: Emails are delivered and website is receiving traffic

    After CLoudFlare:

    • Google domains is still configured to email forward
    • Google Domains is setup to use CloudFlare custom DNS servers
    • When adding my site to CloudFlare, CF automatically got the Synthetic MX records from Google. I confirmed that they match.Status: Email are NOT being delivered. Website is receiving traffic via CloudFlare.

    Please help me resolve this. This is my third attempt at this.

    I dont believe you can use alternative DNS for forwarding e-mails with Google Domains. The NS must remain with Google to do that as far as I know.

    While that is enabled, if you go into the e-mail forwarding settings on Google Domains it says:

    All settings for this domain are disabled and cant be changed. To enable them, restore the default Google Domains name servers.

    You can only do that with a domain that is still registered with google domains they require you to know what email is forwarding to the other email so you must register on google domains for this to work.

    Setting Up Domain Email With Google Apps

  • When signing up for a Google Apps account, make sure you specify you are using your existing domain name.
  • Once you have registered a Google Apps account, you will be redirected to the setup wizard. Select the Set up on your own option.
  • The next step is about creating user accounts on your Google Apps account. You can create up to 10 user accounts.
  • Next, you will need to verify your domain ownership you will not be able to use Google Apps until you have completed this step.
  • Forwarding Emails To Gmail Account

    Free Custom Domain Email accounts setup with Google ...

    Now that we have the necessary data, its time to set the Gmail account so it can receive messages sent to your custom domain email. Heres how:

  • Log in to your Gmail account, click on the gear icon and select Settings -> Accounts and Import.
  • Choose Add a mail account under the Check mail from other accounts section.
  • After you entered your domain email, click Next -> Import emails from my other account -> Next.
  • Fill in the details using the server information we located earlier. The server were using is pop.hostinger.com, and the port is 995.
  • Check the boxes as needed, but we recommend to tick the first three boxes as you can keep two copies of the same messages on different platforms, use a secure connection, and label incoming messages according to its original email destination.
  • Click Add Account to finalize the settings.
  • Youll be prompted with the option to send emails from your custom address. If you only need Gmail to receive emails and choose No, youll be all set! But if you want the platform to be your one-stop destination to receive and send messages, select Yes and continue to the next part.

    Why Use Googles Smtp Server

    Having access to an external SMTP server has a couple of benefits. Most hosting providers offer SMTP support, however this is not always the case. Even if you can send emails from your hosting account, you may bump into deliverability issues. For instance, emails sent from Googles servers are less likely to be labeled as spam.

    Besides, you have a secure backup of your emails on Googles servers. And, if you have more than one accounts you can manage all your emails from the same place, too. It can also be a godsend if you want to send emails from within your website or web application. WordPress even has plugins such as WP Mail SMTP by WPForms or Gmail SMTP for this purpose.

    Some professional services such as newsletters, ebook download forms, and certain LinkedIn services also require users to have a custom email address. Meaning, they dont accept email addresses ending in yahoo.com, gmail.com, etc. Having a custom email address enables you to access these services, too.

    Set Up Email Forwarding

    All new email addresses that you create in your Shopify admin must be forwarded to an existing email address hosted by a third-party, for example, Gmail or Outlook. You can set up forwarding from multiple email addresses.

    Note

    Third-party email hosts that enforce Domain Keys Identified Mail can’t be used as an email forwarding address. AOL and Yahoo are examples of email hosts that enforce DKIM.

    Synching Tasks Notes And Journal

    While the Tasks, Notes and Journal folders sync with other Outlook for Desktop installations, these folders do not sync to all other devices when using Exchange ActiveSync or the Outlook app. You can consider the following alternatives

    TasksTasks syncing via the EAS protocol is supported but many Mail apps, including the Outlook app for iOS and Android, do not sync this folder. Microsoft has developed a separate app called To Do which is dedicated to Tasks management. It uses the Tasks folder in your Outlook.com for storage so everything stays synchronized. This additional Calendar folder will automatically sync with any Mail app.

    You can also use Googles SMTP server to send emails from a PHP server. You can find many popular email sending libraries for PHP. Here, Ill show you how to use one of the most popular ones called PHPMailer. You can install PHPMailer on your server via Composer or manually .

    To configure PHPMailer, you need to edit the gmail.phps file you can find inside the examples folder. The .phps file extension stands for PHP Source and its generally used to store PHP code that can be opened in the web browser for educational or informational purposes. As the contents of a PHP source file can be viewed by anyone just like a regular text file, make sure that you dont leave any passwords or sensitive data in this file.

    Inside the gmail.phps file, you need to define the values of the Username, Password, setFrom, addReplyTo, addAddress, Subject, msgHTML, AltBody, and addAttachment properties. After you added your details, you need to rename the file from gmail.phps to gmail.php so that your web server can interpret it.

    Then, run the script inside your browser. If the email was sent successfully you will see a success message. If something went wrong you can find how to solve the issue on PHPMailers troubleshooting page .

    Setting Up Your Domains Mx Records For Google Workspace

    • Open setup instructions and use another window or tab to sign in to your domain host.
    • Update the MX record settings and direct your email address to your Google Workspace account.
    • If you already have email set up with your domain name, you will start receiving your messages in Gmail instead of your old email provider.

    If people already have your email address with your domain name, you should first create their user accounts before setting up your MX records. This allows them to continue receiving emails.

    At Google Workspace MX setup, you will find step-by-step instructions for your specific domain host such as GoDaddy, Enom, Dreamhost, 1& 1, among others. However, if you cannot find the instructions for your specific domain host, you can use the general steps detailed below.

    Some Important Notes About This Method

    While the Gmail part of this method is 100% free, there are some caveats to this method in that youll need to already have email hosting to make it work. Typically, you would get this through your web host if you have a website.

    For example, if you host your website with Bluehost, Bluehost also helps you create your own custom email address as part of its service .

    If you dont own a domain, heres a quick tool you can use to find out if the domain name youre interested in is available:

    Once you set up your email address with Bluehost, the method in this tutorial would let you use Gmail to send/receive those emails at no extra cost. Unfortunately, already having this email hosting is a basic requirement for the free method.

    For both creating your website and setting up the custom email account to use with Gmail, we recommend Bluehost. Plans start at just $2.75 per month and that includes hosting your website, hosting your email account, plus a free domain name.

    I own a domain name, let’s say domain.com. Is there a way to send and receive email using Gmail’s “Send mail as” function? For example, set up an alias ? Forgive my ignorance, as I’m a total neophyte when it comes to the technical workings of email.

    Backstory: I bought a domain name from Google and web hosting through Siteground. I set up gmail to send and receive email for my new email account using the “send as” function. The web hosting expired, but I still own the domain, AND for some reason I still receive email that is sent to , but I can’t send email as this address .

    So do I need to get another web host to use an SMTP server? Or can I use Gmail’s POP/IMAP and SMTP servers to route mail? And if so, how? It looks like I need an SMTP server address, and a username and password.
