Verify The New Shopify Domain
You have to return to the Shopify admin panel and select Verify connection to confirm the new domain settings. Yet take into account that it can take about 48 hours for your new Shopify domain to point to your store. So, dont worry if you dont see the changes immediately.

Hi there,
Prior to joining Shopify and creating my store, I first brought my domain t8cloth.com from Godaddy.
I saw a few YouTube videos on how to do this but in each case it look like Godaddy needs to be hosting your domain. You can then use their Cpanel to set everything up.
My problem is Godaddy only sold me the domain but is not hosting so there is no Cpanel to access. So I then thought I had to buy an email address from Godaddy to go with my domain. This costs $5USD per month. This then takes me to Office 365 ….and then I am totally lost. I have been using Cpanel for years but this connection to Office 365 is a pain and I regret choosing to let Godaddy handle my email.
So my question are:
1. Can I move my domain over to Shopify. Even if I have to sell/cancel/rebuy it from Godaddy so that Shopify can use it?
I want to stick with the gmail front end as its nice and easy to use.

While it is possible to transfer a domain to Shopify, as with all domains it is only possible to do so 60 days after it has been registered.
It would also be necessary to purchase a year’s subscription to this domain but this would be added to your existing registration time for this domain so you have the same cumulative total time to use that domain.
For domains hosted via Shopify, in order to add a custom domain email service, it would still be necessary to add a third-party email service.

Transfer A Domain From Shopify To Other Registrar
Many people afraid that they will not be able to transfer their domain if they ever decide to cancel their Shopify subscription. Thats not true unless you registered or transferred your domain within the last 60 days. This is how you can transfer a domain outside of Shopify Transfer your Domains Outside Shopify .
Here are the instructions for each of the registrars I mentioned earlier. If you follow the previous article and one of the next ones you will be good to go.

Shopify will not allow you to initiate the transfer of your domain from within your Shopify account if it has a .co.uk, .eu or .be extension. To transfer these domains you will need to contact Shopify support.
Once you have logged into your Shopify account select ‘online store’ from the menu and then ‘domains’.
In the Shopify-managed domains section, click on the name of the domain name you want to transfer.
Next, click the transfer domain button and then transfer to another provider.
Review the information displayed and click the ‘confirm’ button.
A domain name authorisation code will then be displayed .
You need to make a note of this code.
Next, you’ll need to initiate the transfer with the new domain name registrar.

Heres the rule: redirect every URL that has a clear corresponding page on the new site. 404 everything else.
Whats a 404?
That just means removing the page so that your site returns a 404 message any time someone tries to access that URL. It tells people that theres nothing there.
A few years ago, I was very anti-404. I used to think that every single URL needed a proper redirect and I went a bit overboard on a site. Eventually, our hosting provider reached out and told us that we had too many redirects on our site we needed to cut them down to 1,500. We had about 2,500 at the time.
They were right, we did have too many. I was paranoid about trying to help users land on the right page. I was also worried about losing any traffic from Google and I thought 404s might reduce our rankings. I was wrong on both counts.
First, users struggle a lot more with weird redirect paths than a 404. A 404 gives a super clear message: the page youre looking for doesnt exist. A weird redirect is really tough for a user to understand.
Second, Google prefers 404s for pages that no longer exist. Its a clear signal for them and they dont reduce rankings for sites that have 404s. Theyve publicly stated numerous times how they only want sites to add redirects for pages that have a one-to-one relationship.

A primary domain is the domain name on Shopify that customers often see in the address bar while they browse your online store. In some cases, you are able to use your root domain or a subdomain as your primary domain, however, there is only one primary domain for you to use in most cases.

While you can most definitely transfer your GoDaddy domain to Shopify, I’m afraid it’s not possible to transfer over the GoDaddy website you created. This is because Shopify websites are built on a unique code language called Liquid.

Install The Cart2cart Migration App
