Update Your Name Servers

How to transfer a domain in to Bluehost

Name Servers direct the traffic for your domain to the host server. If you’ve already moved the website to your Bluehost account, you’ll want to update your name servers now to minimize downtime during the transfer otherwise, you’ll have to wait until the transfer is complete. You cannot make DNS changes while the transfer is in progress, so it is important that you do it now.

Our name servers are:

  • ns1.Bluehost.com
  • ns2.Bluehost.com

Your new DNS settings will begin to propagate as soon as you save your changes. Each ISP updates at a different rate, usually taking 24 – 72 hours to complete worldwide. During this time, your emails will be down, and your web traffic will be directed to either the old or new host, depending on the visitor’s ISP.

Pro Tip: If you have services with another provider, you can update your DNS with Bluehost to connect those services and minimize downtime. If you wish to keep DNS management with another provider, do not update your Nameservers – you can update DNS records with your current provider to connect to Bluehost services instead.

Transfer Your Domain To Cloudflare

Transferring your domain to Cloudflare tells your registry that a different registrar can now set those authoritative records for you. The relationship is based on trust. Registries only trust one registrar at any given time to make changes on your behalf.

Transferring a domain to a new registrar informs the registry that they should instead trust that new registrar to modify information. The process requires some action steps at your new and previous registrar. Each registrar handles transfers a bit differently, but in general, they follow a pattern based on rules set by ICANN, the organization responsible for regulating domain registration.

This section contains generic instructions on how to transfer your domain to Cloudflare from most registrars.

Do I Need To Transfer Domain To Bluehost

If youre using Bluehost as your web hosting provider, you dont need to transfer your domain to Bluehost. You can keep your domain registered with your current registrar and point the DNS to Bluehost.

You can change the domain registration of your domain through a domain transfer. If the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers allows it, you can transfer your domain instantly. If you use domain-associated email, you should change it to a public or general email address such as Gmail. You can do this on your own by using a registrar, or you can use one that does it for you. When domain privacy is disabled, the WHOIS database will be updated for up to 24 hours. If youre dissatisfied with the service you get from your current domain registrar, you can transfer your domain to another one.

In addition to unlimited storage, bandwidth, and domains, our plans include a wide range of additional features. Bluehost is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a provider with a comprehensive set of features.

Backup Your Cpanel Account At Your Current Host

How to Transfer a Domain from Bluehost

The next step is to access your cPanel account on your current host and make a backup of all your files. This is a simple process that will usually only take a few minutes to complete, although it could take a little longer if your site has a large amount of data.

To complete this step, simply follow these instructions:

  • Access the backup wizard: The step is to go to the Files section of cPanel and click on the backup wizard. This brings you to the area where you can perform full backups of your site.
  • On this page, select the option to create a backup and then pick what you need to be backed up. Typically, you want your home directory, which includes all files under that directory and all your MySQL databases used for your site.
  • Add email information if needed: If you have created email accounts and forwarders for your site, you can add them into the backed-up data as well if you want them moved over.
  • Select relevant domains: If you have more than one site that youre transferring over to GoDaddy, you can choose to make backups of all of them at this time. Skip this step if youre only moving one site over.
  • Once the backup program has run, make a note of where it placed the backup files. Its generally best to have the backup file stored on your PC to be uploaded easily to GoDaddy in the next step.

    Disable Domain Privacy If Enabled

When you purchase a domain with Bluehost , you have the option to active domain privacy. The keeps your details out of the public WHOIS database. However, to transfer the domain to someone else, you need to disable domain privacy. This is so that the receiving registrar can look up the contact details of the new owner and inform them of the change.

To remove domain privacy, click the tab labeled privacy as shown here:

In the screenshot above, I havent purchased domain privacy so theres nothing for me to do here. But if you have purchased it, this is the place to turn it off.

Things To Consider Before Transferring Your Domain Away From Bluehost

  • Before going further with the domain transfer, it is important to know that when a domain name is transferred away, the name servers associated with your domain stay the same during the transfer from one registrar to the other. So for example if your domain name is using the default name servers of Bluehost, those name servers will be preserved during the transfer and you wont be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete. This means that if you switched to other web hosting provider, and your website was migrated already, before initiating a domain transfer make sure that your domain name is pointed to the name servers of the new provider. As we previously mentioned you wont be able to change the name servers until the transfer is complete.
  • Domain Name Registrations and Web Hosting are separate services. The domain name transfer process will not automatically migrate your website. If you are a ChemiCloud customer and you wish to transfer your website from Bluehost, please submit a migration request from your client area. Our migrations experts will move your existing sites and emails free of charge, seamlessly and with no downtime.
  • The transfer of your domain name will include the renewal of your domains with another year. So for instance if your domain is due to expire on 1st of January 2025, once the transfer is compete, the new expiration date will be 1st of January 2026.
