The Whois Directory And Your Privacy

How is Domain Ownership Determined?

Having WHOIS information available to the public is a good thing. Its one element of keeping domain owners accountable. If someone is using a domain for nefarious reasons, for example, there is an easily accessible record of whos responsible for it. It can also serve as a way for customers to get the contact information of a websites owner. And hey, lets not forget the bragging rights!

However, as you can imagine, there are other, less pleasant reasons why someone would want a domain owners contact information. Unscrupulous types like spammers and identity thieves can gain access to your contact details just by looking up your domain name on any WHOIS look-up website. There are even services out there that watch for and list new domain registrations, which makes it that much easier for such people to find potential targets.

What Is The Whois Database

The WHOIS domain database is an online directory of all registered domain names. The directory includes information about each individual domain name that is registered and is sometimes used for legal reasons. Common uses of the WHOIS database are to check the availability of domain names, view registrant information, and in some cases, identify trademark infringement.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers oversees the WHOIS database. ICANN helps protect domain registrants by prohibiting the use of WHOIS listings for marketing and spam-related purposes.

The Function Of Godaddy Whois Lookup

This tool is used to help you explore the Whois database and access the registration and availability details of an individual domain. The GoDaddy Whois Lookup helps you in the following ways:

  • Finding a domain owner
  • You are able to see who owns the domain, the current domain host, and their contact information. This is very useful especially when you want to buy a domain name.

  • Checking a domain availability
  • If you want to find out if a domain name is available, type the name into the GoDaddy Whois search field. You will get instant results on whether the domain is available or not.

  • Finding out when a domain will expire
  • It is key to know when a domain expires before you buy it. As the date approaches, the owner may decide to sell it or let it expire. Either way, you will get the chance to be the new domain owner.

What Is The Difference Between Whois Lookup And A Domain Check

A domain check helps to identify whether or not a particular domain name is available to register. A Whois lookup gives you access to further limited information regarding a registered domain. Should your requested domain name still be available, you can use both the Whois service, as well as carrying out a domain check in order to easily register your desired domain name with IONOS. Furthermore, we recommend suitable domain alternatives in case a particular domain name is registered already. Regardless of whether you use our Whois lookup or domain check tools, our main goal is to offer you the best support possible on your way to your domain name of choice.

Godaddy To Remove Public Whois Information

Gender equality : GoDaddy owns the domain GoMommy.com ...

Yesterday morning, I was forwarded an ominous sounding email sent by GoDaddy to an industry colleague. The subject of the email was somewhat innocuous, On May 18, 2020 we are retiring Privacy for Backorders. The opening paragraph with details about the changes were concerning to me:

Were working on rolling out changes to better ensure your personal data is hidden in the public WHOIS database, for free. As part of that effort, were ending support for our Private Domain Backorder add-on product. We expect these changes to be live in early June.

This sounded like GoDaddy was planning to make significant changes to how the company displays Whois records for domain names registered there, and that would have major implications for domain investors and GoDaddy customers.

I reached out to a representative from GoDaddy to ask about the email in order to get some clarity on what changes are being made to public Whois records. Paul Bindel, VP of Operations at GoDaddy Registrar, shared the following statement with me:

Due to changing privacy regulations in the U.S. and around the world, GoDaddy is in the process of making some changes to align our offerings similar to what we did in GDPR regions.

I believe the privacy regulations referenced in the quote are related to the California Consumer Privacy Act .

When I learn more about the forthcoming changes, I will share an update.

    Godaddy Whois Lookup For Beginners

Have you ever tried finding or creating a domain name? This activity can take up chunks of your time. It is almost as if all the domain names you would want are already registered by other people and that is where GoDaddy Whois Lookup comes in to save the day.

The GoDaddy Whois domain tool is a database containing information on all registered domain names. It responds to the question, who owns a given domain name or IP address.

According to ICANNs regulations, when a domain is registered, the owner should provide some contact information. Such contact information can be viewed by anyone who looks up the domain online.

How To Use The Whois Database

Its extremely easy to use the WHOIS domain database on GoDaddy. Just following these simple steps:

Godaddy Whois Records: No More Contact Information

Want to buy a domain name that is registered at GoDaddy? Getting in touch with a registrant via email or phone just became a bit more difficult. As of yesterday, GoDaddy is no longer showing domain registrant contact information in Whois records. The only information that is shown on Whois searches is the registrant organization, registrant state and country, and nameserver records. Email addresses and phone numbers are no longer shown.

While this change is going to be frustrating to domain investors, journalists, and possibly law enforcement personnel, it is not unexpected. In April, I reported that GoDaddy planned to remove public Whois records across the board, as it has been doing to customers in Europe whose data was redacted due to GDPR privacy laws. The impetus for this most recent change was the California Consumer Privacy Act .

Heres how a Whois lookup at GoDaddy appears today for domain names that are not registered under privacy proxy:

For people who value privacy, the Domains by Proxy privacy proxy service upgrade may still provide value to customers. Heres how a Whois lookup appears at GoDaddy for domain names registered using GoDaddys Domains By Proxy, LLC service:

One benefit of this change for domain investors is that it will likely lead to fewer spam phone calls and spam text messages pitching various services, such as logo design, web design, hosting, and other peripheral services.

    Who Manages Domain Name Registration?

A Whois domain lookup allows you to trace the ownership and tenure of a domain name. Similar to how all houses are registered with a governing authority, all domain name registries maintain a record of information about every domain name purchased through them, along with who owns it, and the date till which it has been purchased.

    Public Whois Database Listing

If you’re comfortable with having your information available to the public and don’t want the extra fee associated with private domain registration Network Solutions will submit a public listing to the WHOIS lookup database. This listing will include your name, address, phone number, email address and domain name expiration date. Your IP address and host name will also be listed.

    Why Is Whois Data Important

Every time a domain name is registered, registrars need to verify the identity of a domains owner or registrant. This information is important because any domain name disputes and technical issues will need to be resolved by the domain name owner.

Beyond this, WHOIS information is used by different parties in many different ways. In some cases, domain names may be put up for sale and having WHOIS information is a way to determine and generate leads in the sale of a domain name. WHOIS information can also be used by network administrators to combat spam, fraud, identify trademark infringement and track down registrants that may be engaged in damaging or illegal activities.

What Is A Whois Ip Lookup

An IP is a unique address of a server on the internet. Similar to how a telephone number allows you to connect to a specific phone on the telecom network, similarly, an IP address allows your computer to connect to a specific server on the internet.

Domain names and IP numbers are the framework upon which the entire world wide web is built.

IP numbers are assigned to networking organisations with a record maintained by governing bodies for each IP number and the organisation to which it has been assigned. A whois IP lookup allows you track the above mentioned details for a domain.

When unidentified individuals defame businesses or professionals online, the harmed parties can potentially serve subpoenas on relevant entities for documents containing identifying information about the authors of the online defamation.

The way this process often plays out is as follows :

    • Party A publishes false and defamatory statements about Party B in a review on a third-party website
    • Party B, which/who has adequate legal grounds for doing so, files a lawsuit against the unknown Party A for defamation and related causes of action
    • Party B serves a subpoenaseeking documents containing identifying information pertaining to Party Aon the parent company of the website on which Party A published his or her defamatory statements
    • The subpoenaed entity produces the requested documents, from which Party B will either learn Party As identity, or Party B will need to consider issuing additional subpoenas based on new information produced in response to the first subpoena .

While we most often see internet defamation take place on third-party websitesand we have published several blog posts about using subpoenas to identify anonymous defamers on various websitessome people actually register new domains and publish false and defamatory content on their own websites.

Nonetheless, parties who are victims of anonymous defamation on specially-created websites are not out of luck.

Track Down A Domain Owner Who Uses Whois Privacy

Whois privacy shields a domain registrants contact information from public view. When private Whois is enabled on a domain name, it can be more challenging if not impossible to track down a domain name registrant to buy the domain name. There is no way to see who registered a domain name that has private Whois records short of litigation or a UDRP filing.

That being said, there are several ways I have had success tracking down domain registrants who utilize Whois privacy proxy services. Here are some of the tactics that can be used to learn who owns a domain name that is privately registered:

How To Transfer The Ownership Of A Godaddy Registered Name

The GoDaddy registration service makes it simple to transfer a domain name to another GoDaddy customer. This process is useful if you have sold your domain name to a new owner or want a trusted partner to manage the domain. Once you initiate a transfer, the new owner has ten days to accept the domain. A transferred domain name belongs to the recipient as soon as they approve the move.

    1

Access the GoDaddy Account Manager . Enter your username and password, and log in.

    2

Locate the section marked “Domains,” and then click “Launch” to open the Domain Control Center.

    3

Select the box next to the specific domain that you want to transfer. Click “More” on the options bar, and then click “Change Domain Ownership.”

    4

Type the new owner’s email address. If you know the new owner’s account number, select the box labeled “I Have the Recipients Customer Account Number/Username.”

    5

Locate the “Domain Contact Information” section. Choose “Enter New Details” if you want to provide new contact information. Select “Use Details from Specified Customer Account” if you provided a customer number in the previous step, or click “Do Not Change” to keep the existing information.

    6

Choose “Keep the Current Nameservers for This Domain.” If you do not choose this option, GoDaddy will park the domain until the new owner modifies the settings. Click “Next.”

    How To Protect Yourself

How Many People Whois Your Domain Names at GoDaddy

Protect yourself in the following ways:

    • Purchase your own domain name from a registrar like GoDaddy or Register.com. They have customer service teams who can walk you through how to do it if youre unsure.
    • If possible, try to register your domain name under the hotels name, not an individuals name. That way, if someone leaves the business, you dont have to worry about transferring the domain name into someone elses name. Ask your domain registrar provider if this is an option.
    • Dont share your domain registrar password with anyone . Your web developer, agency or website provider does not need direct access to this. GoDaddys customer service team can help you with the technical aspect of launching a new website if needed.
    • Keep login details separate for your domain registrar and web hosting provider . The last thing you want is a hacker gaining access to both!
    • If a third-party does purchase your domain name for you, ask the right questions. Who owns the domain if you end your contract? Who owns the website, including all design, code and content? If its not you, then dont sign.

With Vizlly, well always advocate for our customers to purchase their own domain name, because its the right thing to do to ensure their long-term success.
