Chapter : Removing A Domain Controller

Server Basics (1) | Setup a Domain Controller | Windows Server 2008 R2

If you wish to remove a domain controller from an existing domain, follow these steps. NOTE: If you remove the last remaining domain controller for a domain, all Active Directory information from that domain will be permanently lost. In addition, removing the last domain controller from a domain requires Enterprise Administrator privileges.

  • Make a copy of the netlogon.dns file from your domain controllers < WINDIR> \SYSTEM32\CONFIG directory. < WINDIR> will usually be C:\WINDOWS. Do this first because it will be deleted by later steps.
  • This starts the Active Directory Installation Wizard. Click Next .
  • There is a check box in the Remove Active Directory screen. If this computer is the last domain controller in the domain, click to select the check box. Otherwise, click Next .
  • In the next screen, set the password for the administrator account on the server after Active Directory is removed. Type the appropriate password in the Password and Confirm Password boxes, and then click Next .
  • In the Summary screen, review and confirm the options you selected, and then click Next .
  • The wizard begins the process of removing Active Directory from the server. After the process is finished, a message indicates that Active Directory was removed from the computer.
  • Restart the computer.
  • Using the netlogon.dns file you made a copy of in step #1 as a point of reference:
  • Use to remove all the SRV, CNAME, & A records for dcserver1.xyz.washington.edu .

    Web Hosting Pricing & Value

Some choose web hosting providers based solely on price. While thats not a great strategy, you should certainly take pricing into consideration. The best providers offer plans for every budget and in some cases, signing up for longer subscriptions will qualify for extra discounts.

Also, leave some room to grow. Choosing a web hosting plan that meets your websites current needs is great. But, with any luck, your site will grow and expand over time, and your needs may change. Since switching to a new web hosting provider is a major hassle, consider one that offers scalable plans. Meaning, you should be able to upgrade to another plan easily once necessary. Low prices are always nice, but if the low price comes with a limit on space or bandwidth, you need to be sure the deal is really worth it.

Along the same lines, you may want to pay attention to how many email accounts are provided. Whether or not you believe youll need dozens of email addresses, its nice to have the option to create as many as possible down the line. In most cases, a larger numbers of email addresses are included in more expensive plans. This feature, while not very important to some, is critical to others.

    Dns Name Server Types

    NOTE:name service clients

    Master name servers

A master name server is authoritative for one or more DNS zones. Each server maintains its data in database files, and may transfer thisdata periodically to a slave server if one exists in thezone.

When a server answers a client request, it attaches an expiration for the data after whichthe data is considered invalid. The time-to-live variable is specified in theSOA resource record contained in thezone’s database file.

Master name servers should be machines that are reliable and haveexcess memory and disk storage space.

A server may serve as a master server for one or more zones and asa slave server for other zones.“An example of a master name server”shows an example of a name server that is master formynet.com but slave for its childrenrivers.mynet.com andseas.mynet.com.

An example of a master name server

The master server reads the configuration file,/etc/named.conf, to determine which zones are served andin which zone files the data is stored.

See“Configuring a host as a name server”for instructions on how to configure a master name server using theDNS Manager.

    NOTE:

    Slave name servers

An example of a slave name server

When a slave server answers a client request, it attaches an expirationfor the data afterwhich the data is considered invalid. The time-to-live value is specifiedin the SOA resource record contained in thezone’s database file.

A server may serve as a slave for one or more zones anda master for others.

    NOTE:

Setting Up The Ad Dns Back End

Skip this step if you provisioned the DC using the SAMBA_INTERNAL DNS back end.

    • Start the BIND DNS server. For example:
    # systemctl start named

What Is Lamp And How Does It Work

The best way to create a local web server is to install LAMP, one of the most popular stacks for building and deploying dynamic web applications. The LAMP stack uses Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP as its foundation.

Below is a brief explanation of how LAMP works:

  • Requests will be pointed to the Apache web server whenever a user visits your website.
  • The web server will look for the requested web page file and pass the information to PHP. PHP interprets and pulls the necessary data from the MySQL database to render the web content.
  • Finally, the Apache web server delivers the web content and displays it on the users web browser.

    Configuring Domain Name System Servers

Setup Active Directory, Domain Controller, Configure DNS, DHCP and Join Computers to Domain

If you use BIND, you need not update every computer’s/etc/hosts file each time you add a computer to thenetwork. Instead, a Domain Name System serveradds the new computer to its host name database andanswers queries from DNS clients on the local network and outside networks or the Internet.

Your system is configured by default to use the network hostsfile /etc/hosts found on each computer. You may want toconfigure and use DNS instead if:

  • Your network is large and regularly adds anddeletes hosts.
  • Your network is connected to the Internet. For example, you will usually need to configureDNS for convenience if you use aWeb browser. In previous releases, configuring aDNS name server required you toedit the DNS configuration and otherdatabase files. This required you to have athorough knowledge of the format of these files and how theyinteract with one another.UnixWare includes theDNS Managerwhich provides a graphical administrative interfacethat you can use to create and maintain theDNS configuration files.
  • The complementaryClient Managerallows you to configure a system as a client ofDNS name service.

For more information about administering name servers, see“BIND 9 Administrator’s Guide”and the references in“For more about DNS”.
