Can’t You Get Free Custom Email With Google
Back in the day, Google Apps had a free tier that allowed people to set up free custom email addresses for up to ten users. It was awesome. But near the end of 2012, Google shut their free service down, forcing people to look for paid alternatives.
But there may still be a way to do it . From Ian Macalinao:
Its pretty much common knowledge that Gmail is awesome. Its fast, connects seamlessly with the rest of your Google services such as Drive, has a cool app called Inbox, and is overall an extremely powerful email service. However, to use it with a custom domain, you need to purchase Google Apps for either $5 or $10/month, which for casual users is a bit unnecessary. On top of that, you dont even get all of the features a personal account gets, e.g. Inbox.
However, theres a free way to use your Gmail account with a custom domain: Mailgun.
It only works for up to 10,000 emails a month and is definitely developer-centric, but its free!
Receive A Free Email Domain From Bluehost
This method requires you to purchase a web hosting plan, so its not entirely free. However, if you need to host a website anyway, you can use an affordable option such as Bluehost and get an email domain as part of the deal.
First, head to Bluehost and choose your plan. The cheapest option starts at $2.75 per month, which is still more affordable than purchasing a domain or a dedicated email hosting service.
Once youve selected your plan, youll be able to register a website domain. If youre unsure which name to choose, you can use a domain name generator that will give you suggestions and confirm their availability.
Once youve finished setting up your account, log in to your Bluehost dashboard and go to Advanced> Email Accounts. From here, youll be able to configure your email domain.
There are several ways you can start using your new email domain. For instance, you can use Bluehosts webmail interface, or connect to a popular email client such as Outlook, Thunderbird, or Gmail. Some users prefer this solution as its more convenient, as you dont have to log in to your hosting account to check your inbox.
Allow Gmail To Receive Emails Using Pop3
Once you have your custom email account, youre going to use something called POP3 to connect Gmail to your custom email address. Essentially, these settings let your free Gmail account import emails from your email hosting .
To get started, you need to find your emails POP3 settings. At Bluehost, you can do this by clicking the Connect Devices tab when youre editing your email account. Heres what it looks like:
If your email hosting is elsewhere, youll want to consult your services documentation or reach out to their support if you cant find your POP3 information.
- Open the Gmail settings by clicking the gear icon in the top-right corner and selecting See all settings.
- Go to the Accounts and Import tab.
- Find the Check mail from other accounts setting.
- Click Add a mail account.
That should open a popup with multiple steps.
On the next step, choose Import emails from my other account :
Enter the following information:
- Username normally, this is your full email address, but sometimes its only the part that comes before @.
- Password the password that you set when creating your custom email address.
- POP Server and Port from your email host.
- Check the Leave a copy box.
- Check the Always use a secure connection box.
- Optionally choose to add a label.
- Click Add Account to finish the process.

Connect To Your Email Provider
How you connect your domain to your email host depends on where you registered your domain name. If you registered a domain name through an all-in-one domain and email hosting service like Google Workspace, youll simply follow the remaining prompts and the work is done for you. On the other hand, if you registered your domain through a web hosting service, site builder, or another third-party service, you may need to take additional steps.
For example, if you got your domain as part of your web hosting plan, you need to navigate to your web hosting providers instructions on how to set up your new business email address. For most, you will see an option labeled Email from within your account dashboard. Follow the prompts to set up your custom email address.
From there, all you need to do is decide how you would like your email address formatted. For help deciding which is right for your business, learn more about choosing a professional email address.

Set Up A New Email Address Using Your Domain
First off, you need to create an email address using your domain within your host, or with an email provider. With some hosts this is simple . With managed hosting providers such as Kinsta, WP Engine, and others, theres no way to create email accounts and addresses with them.
This is because of the security and performance aspects we discussed earlier. Its functionality some hosts stay away from, preferring to leave it to the experts.
If youre with a host that uses cPanel , theres often a way to create email addresses from the dashboard.
Youll find this within the Email Accounts screen within cPanel:
This brings you to another screen that lets you create the email account. Its straightforward, and completes much like any other registration form:
Once you save your changes, the email account will have been created. Though, you wont yet be able to send email to your new address. For that, youll need to head to the next step.
To confuse matters, you can also set up your custom email with a dedicated email provider, which makes lots of sense seeing as youre using the platform. For example, a premium ProtonMail account lets you create email addresses from its Domains screen:
For a provider known for its ease of setup and use, has a convoluted process that involves:
- Registering as a premium user.
- Adding a code snippet to your website for verification purposes.
- Creating new aliases for other email addresses.
This Is Hard And Even A Bit Scary
E-mail is hard. If you want an easier sysadmin project, go set up a Web server. E-mail is a lot more complex, with many more moving parts. On the other hand, your correspondence with others is one of the most personal aspects of your online lifein a medium ultimately made of text, your words are you. Its worth learning how to claw your online life back from those who would data mine and monetize it.
There are pitfalls and caveatsthe biggest of which is that if you run your own e-mail server, you will be the sysadmin. The upside of this is that no bored or tired customer service rep about to go off-shift is going to fall for a social engineering attack and reset your e-mail password. The downside is that you are responsible for the care and feeding of your system. This is not an impossible taskits not even really difficultbut it is non-trivial and never-ending. Applying critical updates is your responsibility. When do critical updates come out? Thats your responsibility to keep track of, too.
Worst of all, if you screw up and your server is compromised or used as spam relay, your domain will almost certainly wind up on blacklists. Your ability to send and receive e-mail will be diminished or perhaps even eliminated altogether. And totally scrubbing yourself from the multitude of e-mail blacklists is about as difficult as trying to get off of the TSAs No Fly list.
You have been warned.

You have two options available when creating custom email addresses: forwards and mailboxes. The forward option will forward any incoming emails that are sent to your custom address to another specified email address you own, but will not let you send emails from your custom address. Can’t You Get A Free Custom Address With Microsoft
Like the free custom email deal with Google Apps, Microsoft used to offer a service that allowed users to attach their custom domains to free Hotmail and Outlook.com accounts. But in 2014, they shut it down to focus on their paid offerings.
The move is disappointing, but not surprising. The fact that the Windows Live Admin Center continued to use the old Windows Live branding and was never updated with the modern design of Outlook.com was probably the biggest clue. In addition, the service has always been extremely limited, with administrators only able to add or delete addresses. And the relatively recent addition of a prominent Microsoft Office 365 link under the Sign In button was telling as well.
Basically, if youre looking for free custom email today, your only option is Zoho Mail.
