How To Determine When A Domain Name Will Expire

    Naeem MobasharJanuary 14, 2011 | Updated: December 9, 201545

Although many people say, I own xyz.tld , people dont really own domain names. Instead, they are leased to an individual, business or organization for at least a year, and at most 10 years.

While domain names can be renewed in perpetuity, often times domain names will expire. If you desire a domain name and do not want to approach the owner about buying it from them, you can simply wait for it to expire. But how do you determine when a domain name will expire?

Tips On Choosing A Domain Name

As a final tip, consider registering variants for your domain name if you feel people may accidentally misspell your original domain or turn a singular noun plural and vice versa. You should then set up that variant to redirect to your actual domain.

For example, if you enter googl.com in your browser, it redirects to the proper google.com.

You can also register variants that use different TLDs. If you use .com, register variants of your domain that use .net, .org., .io, .biz and any other TLD you feel is popular in your industry. This prevents competitors from registering them in the future.

More Tips About Domain Registration If You Aren’t Sure Who Your Domain Registrar Is:

Your domain registrar may be the same or different from your web host. It’s possible to buy these services from the same company, but they are actually different services. So you may want to check with your website host to see if they can help you figure out the company you bought your domain from, or if they are your registrar as well as your DNS hosting provider or domain host.

If you are not sure who your web host is, you can find that out by examining your DNS record, specifically your nameservers. Our favorite tool for this is LeafDNS. If your nameservers are, for example, “ns1.bluehost.com”, then Bluehost is your web host.

Domain names can be difficult or impossible to get back if you lose them, so you want to make very sure to renew it with your current registrar before it expires. Expired domain names are often snapped up by companies who just sit on them until someone is willing to pay a hefty price to get them back.

And while you are at it, you may want to add domain privacy if your registrar offers it. This prevents you from getting spam from your public WHOIS data listing your administrative contact and other personal details.

But if theres a domain out there that youre interested in purchasing, how do you go about getting in touch with the owner? Well explain how in this handy guide.

    Check Your Billing Records

Checking your billing records is probably the easiest, and therefore, the first method you should use. Typically, your domain name registrar is who you bought your domain name from. If you dont remember who that registrar is, try searching your email archives for records regarding your domain name registration . The domain registrar should be listed on your invoice.

Its imperative that you keep your domain registrar up to date regarding changes to your email address and/or contact information. Registrars send renewal notifications to the email address they have listed.

Is Domain The Same As Ip Address

What is a Domain Name | Things you should know before buying a Domain Name (Beginner’s Guide)

An Internet Protocol, or IP, address is different than a domain name. The IP address is an actual set of numerical instructions. It communicates exact information about the address in a way that is useful to the computer but makes no sense to humans. The domain name functions as a link to the IP address.

    Whois Public Domain Info

WHOIS is a database that stores public information on a domains registered users in a way that can be easily read. It basically tells you who is responsible for a domain. Many online registrars will allow you to access and search the WHOIS databases. I use the Godaddy lookup out of habit but any of them should work just fine.

WHOIS will also give you the registrant name of the individual who registered the domain. Now youll be able to know if it was an old web designer, a business partner, or even yourself who set it up. Youll also find the date of creation and expiration date. With this information you can hopefully contact the person who registered it and have them transfer the domain to you. And we all live happily ever after!

If you need to recover a domain account where you lost the password, the WHOIS info will often give the registrant email address which will help you in recovering a password and login from the domain registrar.

Transferring is slightly complicated but I created a video on how to easily transfer domain names that you can find HERE.

Note: Keep in mind that some domain owners pay for privacy to hide the public WHOIS information and provide only proxy info. In that case, youll be out of luck and may just need to wait for the domain to expire so you can register it yourself

    Who Is My Email Provider

To find out, you should do a DNS lookup and look at the MX record. The MX record tells you where the email portion of your domain is handled. Do a search on the domain listed there to find out who your email provider is.

Since the company hosting your website may or may not be hosting your email, it might be a little confusing to track down who an email host / provider really is. Add to that these numerous spam/junk email cleaning services out there, who temporarily get your email to clean it up and then send it back to you and figuring out who an email host is can be downright confusing.

This article gives some tips and ways to find out where an email address is hosted. Im giving you the non-geek ways first and then the geek ways. Both get you about the same results so that you know where your domain names email is hosted.

The Geek Way: Start With The Domain Name

First, always start from the beginning. Start with the domain. Do a whois to find out which name servers are being used with this domain.

You will see this in the results:

    Name Server: NS.RACKSPACE.COMName Server: NS2.RACKSPACE.COM

There are 2 or more name servers listed usually as there is a primary server and secondary server. Very often, where you have your DNS is where you have other things like your website hosting and email, so this is a valuable clue.

What Is The Domain Name System

How To Change Your Username / Computer Name In Windows 10 ...

The domain name system is the phonebook of the internet, as Cloudflare puts it. Its what allows us to use domains to visit websites instead of IP addresses.

Its called DNS resolution, a process that converts a domain name into an IP address. This allows us to enter the user-friendly name of a web address while a machine-friendly version of the address is still available for the system to find its location.

You enter web addresses in your browser regularly without ever being aware of whats going on behind the scenes. Whereas you see a web page load in a few short seconds upon entering a URL in your browser, that DNS resolution went through four servers and multiple steps to complete your request.

The first is the recursor server, which initiates a DNS lookup. This server accepts queries from applications like your web browser and makes additional queries on your behalf if necessary.

Next is the root nameserver. This server begins the process of turning your hostname into an identifiable IP address by directing your request down the hierarchy that makes up the DNS.

This hierarchy is located in the third server, the top-level domain nameserver or TLD nameserver. In order for the resolution to return an IP address for your domain, it must identify its TLD. It does this by looking at your domains extension.

If we use en.wikipedia.org as an example, the hierarchy would like this:

    Uncovering Secrets With Dns

How to Find Out Where Your Domain Name is Registered

Every domain has DNS info that is public. You can browse this on many sites but I like to use leafdns.com. DNS is what points domain services to different servers like pointing your email to Google and your website to Bluehost. This may not tell you who owns your domain but it can tell you HOW your domain is being used which may be an important step in recovering your website files if youve lost those in addition to the domain. I often use this when Im on a call and a prospect doesnt even know where their site is hosted. It makes me look really smart!
