What Are My Name Server Records

Pointing Your Domain to Your Web Host

Your host will assign name servers to store your DNS zone filesfiles that contain information about your websites IP address. The quickest way to find your name server records is to look up your welcome email from HostGator, which includes them.

Cant find your email? No problem. You can look up your name servers online.

If you have a shared hosting plan, you can log in to your cPanel to find your name server information. On the lower left column of your Account Information panel, youll see two URLs that end with hostgator.com.

Your name servers wont be redacted like our example.

If you have optimized WordPress hosting, log in to your HostGator control panel, select Domains from the left sidebar, and click More for the domain whose name servers you need. When the Domain Overview panel opens, youll see your name server addresses in the upper right corner.

Copy both name server addresses, because youll need to share both of them with your domain registrar. But before we do that, lets talk about the possibility that your site may be offline while the domain pointing actually happens.

Pointing Domain To Vps Via A Record

The following method is a pretty straightforward solution. It would involve changing your current A record in the . This means that the A record switch must be carried out at the DNS zone where your nameservers are currently pointing.

If you choose this option, your DNS zone file with all other existing entries will remain with the current provider. The approach may be easier for beginners or those who do not wish to alter the location of their DNS zone.

If youre not sure where your domain name is pointing at the moment, you may use DNS lookup tools or utilize the dig command to locate the NS records. Executing the following command via terminal will do the trick:

dig NS +short hostinger-tutorials.xyz

Now that you know where your domain is pointed, navigate to the provider and open up your domains DNS zone.

What Is A Nameserver Explained In More Detail

When a user enters a URL in their browser, like kinsta.com, there needs to be some way to connect that URL with the underlying web server that powers the website at that domain name.

Think how difficult it would be if you had to enter the actual IP address of a web server every time you wanted to visit a website. You wouldnt be able to remember whether it was 159.89.229.118 or 159.89.229.119 it would be a mess!

Nameservers play an important role in connecting a URL with a server IP address in a much more human-friendly way.

Nameservers look like any other domain name. When you look at a websites nameservers, youll typically see a minimum of two nameservers . Heres an example of what they look like:

Kinsta spoiled me so bad that I demand that level of service from every provider now. We also try to be at that level with our SaaS tool support.

    • Ns-1076.awsdns-06.org

Only instead of serving up a website, those nameservers help direct traffic.

To illustrate the role that nameservers play in directing traffic on the Internet, lets look at a real example.

Lets say you want to visit the Kinsta homepage. On the surface, this action is simple: you type kinsta.com into your browsers address bar and you see the Kinsta homepage. Easy, right?

But behind-the-scenes, the high-level process actually goes something like this:

Pointing A Domain To A Host

Lets say you have just moved your site to another hosting provider. However, your domain name stayed with the old hosting company, and it does not direct visitors to your website.

This problem happens because your domain is not connected to the new web host. You have several options on how to solve this issue, but in practice, we only recommend using one method.

You can transfer the domain to the new hosting provider. However, domain transfer usually includes additional charges as the domain will be renewed for another year. The domain renewal price depends on the TLD you are using. For .com it is $13.99/year.

The second option is to update the domains DNS A record with your new IP address. Nevertheless, since A records are designed to point to static IP addresses, its advisable not to use this method. If the IP changes, your website will stop working until you update the record.

The last method is changing the domains nameservers. This is the most recommended option as you can transfer your domains DNS control to the new hosting provider without changing your registrar.

    Apply The New Nameservers Values

The next step of pointing a domain name to Hostinger or a new host is to replace the domains old nameservers. Heres how to do it:

  • Login to your domain registrar. Remember, this is the place where you bought your domain.
  • Look for the option to set your domains nameservers. Every registrar has a different way of doing this. However, in general, you can find the appropriate settings on the menu called Domain Management, or Domain Overview, or something along those lines.
  • In hPanel, go to Domains -> -> DNS / Nameservers. Expand Change Nameservers and select the Change nameservers option. You should see several fields, such as Nameserver 1 , Nameserver 2 , that will most likely be filled with Hostingers default nameservers.
  • Enter the nameservers into the appropriate fields. For example, a nameserver that begins with ns1 should be put into the Nameserver 1 field, if it starts with ns2 to Nameserver 2, and so on.
  • Pro Tip

If you see the Create child nameservers field, you can ignore it.

Keep these tips in mind should there be any difference between the number of nameservers and the number of available fields:

    • If your hosting provider only gives you two nameservers, but your registrar provides you with four or more fields, enter the first two, leaving the other ones empty.
    • If your hosting provider gives you three nameservers, but your registrar only allows you to enter two, use the first two nameservers.

The important thing to remember is this:

if you change your domains nameservers away from the default nameservers at your domain registrar, youll control your domains DNS records at your nameserver provider.

For example, if you use the nameservers from Amazon Route 53 that Kinsta provides, youd then edit your individual DNS records from your Kinsta dashboard, not your domain registrar:

    Add a new domain

    Hostingers nameservers are:

    ns1.dns-parking.comns2.dns-parking.com

There are two main ways to point a domain name to Hostinger:

    • Changing the nameservers at your domain name registrar. This method is recommended since your DNS zone will be automatically configured to match the hostings IP Address. Plus, it enables you to transfer the control of your domain settings to our hPanel, making management convenient.
    • Pointing the domain name via A record. This method requires you to change the IP address connected to the DNS records. That way, your domain control stays in the registrar. Unless youre sure the IP address is going to be static, this procedure is not recommended.

Important! This guide shows how to point a domain name if its NOT registered with Hostinger. For a general tutorial on pointing a domain name to another provider, check out our tutorial on how to change domain nameservers.

Prepping For A Change In Domain Nameservers

Nameservers are often referred to as the phone book of the internet, sending you to the correct domain when you type in a web address.

There are two primary components to making your website accessible to the public:

  • Your domain name
  • The first must point to the second to connect the two.

The registrar you purchased your domain from also has its own nameservers , however if you want them managed elsewhere you must change the DNS records.

Doing it all from a single location is ideal, as it cuts out the middle agent and puts the same quality that powers your sites behind your DNS.

DNS propagation is the term for your sites nameservers and other records updating across the web. This process can take anywhere from a few minutes to a couple days to finalize.

If your site was already live, it might become briefly inaccessible to visitors during the nameserver change. You could create a temporary page with info regarding the approximate downtime, then publish it just prior to the server change. .

Its also helpful to handle nameserver changes during a period when traffic volume is typically on the low end.

Do you need to change nameservers and point your domain to a new WordPress hosting provider?

In this article, well show you how to easily change domain nameservers and point to a different host or firewall, step by step.

    What Are Nameservers?

Nameservers are part of the global database of domain name system. Their job is to tell other computers where to find a domain name.

If your web hosting account is the house where your website files live, then the domain name is the street address of that house.

Nameservers tell the internet where to locate the website address associated with a domain name.

When you enter a domain name in your web browser, it first sends a request to a global network of servers that form the Domain Name System .

These servers then search for the respective nameservers associated with the domain and forward the request accordingly.
