Configuring Storage On Data Domain Server

Now you should prepare a Data Domain storage unit to be used as a Backup Repository for NAKIVO Backup & Replication. Open the web interface for managing the Data Domain protection storage. Command Line Interface is also available.

1. Open the Data Domain System Manager, then go to Data Management > File System.

2. Create the file system if it has not yet been created. In order to create the file system, click âCreateâ and follow the instructions of the wizard.

4. Create a new storage unit. In order to do this, do the following:

On the DD Boost page, open the Storage Units tab. Then, in Storage Units click âAddâ. The âCreate Storage Unitâ window appears. Enter the name of the storage unit, username, and password. You can use an existing user or create a new user by clicking âCreate a new Local Userâ. Click the âCreateâ button in the âCreate Storage Unitâ window.

We began working with this solution before the migration between Dell and EMC.

I have some experience with Veritas, and they offer backup appliances as well. However, they have nothing that can be compared to or compete with Data Domain. This solution from Dell EMC is the number one backup appliance.

IBM Spectrum Protect is a “Backup and Recovery” product, while Dell EMC Data Domain is the backup *storage* appliance. They have their respective market.

Though I must say that DD is the leader, while SP is a struggling product.. i.e there is no comparision.

DD is deduplication target while IBM Spectrum protect is brand new name for and old and creepy TSM The biggest difference is that you will not create complementary backup solution with DD only, you need some kind of backup software to do it for you.TSM can write backups to DD.

The biggest difference is that Data Domain is an appliance storage system but Spectrum is a software solution only.

In my opinion DD have better compression/dedup and also good aggregated replication speed, however it lack all functionality which is provided SP! Also as a hardware based solution we struggle with scaling up DD ! Comparison is not entirely possible since these are completely different purpose and usage ! In the environment we use DD as a disc storage for staging SP made backups!

Pricing for this product could still be improved, though several years ago, its price was very high. When there are more competitors, though, the price becomes more attractive both for the customer and partner. Now we can get more discounts for projects. The price for this product will decrease, because more and more companies now produce integrated devices, e.g. deduplication is not a very new technology, but it was a feature that was limited to several market leaders.
