Is There Anyway To Get Around This
In short, there is no way of buying a domain name permanently.
It would just be like saying I want to buy vehicle registration forever, which is simply not possible.
However
You still can registrar a domain name permanently as long as you pay the registration fee every year.
When it comes to registering a domain name, website owners will normally registrar their domain name for 1-2 years.
But this can be risky, especially if you dont turn on auto-domain renewal, change an email address, or have your payment details change.
This is why it is sometimes better to opt for a longer registration period, which from my research, seems to be a massive 100-year registration!
Which may as well be forever!
However, with this, you have to fork out around $2,000 upfront to have it registered for that amount of time.
Instead, you could opt for a more moderate 5-10 year registration, then pay the yearly renewal fee.

Run A Domain Name Search
Now that you have found a registrar through which to register your domain, the next step is to perform a domain name search.
When choosing a domain name, make sure to pick the right domain extension as well its the suffix at the end of a web address. Domain name extensions are also referred to as top-level domains .
There are different types of domain extensions available, such as:
- Country Code Top-Level Domain . This kind of TLD represents a specific country, letting both users and search engines know that a site is designed for visitors from a particular region. An example of this is the .us domain, which is the ccTLD for the United States.
- Sponsored Top-Level Domain . Its a type of TLD restricted to certain types of groups and organizations. Some of sTLD examples include .mil, .gov, and .edu.
- Generic Top-Level Domain . Its the most common type of TLD it doesnt rely on a country code and can be used for general purposes. A few examples of gTLDs include .com, .org, and .net.
When deciding on the extension that is suitable for your domain, look for a TLD that represents the purpose of your website. Choosing the wrong suffix can confuse visitors and make your brand name prone to being misinterpreted.
For example, a .com or .biz extensionmight be best for an eCommerce business. On the other hand, if you plan to create a blog to keep an online journal, an extension like .me can be an excellent solution.

Buying different versions of your domain name can help protect your brand and eliminate the chances of anyone else buying the domain if it is available. How You Can Get As Close As Possible To Owning A Domain Name For Life
If youre worried about the price of your domain skyrocketing or others beating you to the punch and buying it from under your nose just as youre about to renew it, dont worry theres a way to make sure none of this happens.
It may dawn on you to become a domain registrar yourself so the domain remains your own for as long as you wish. However, this is not a great solution as its a lot of work and very costly. Youd need to pay an annual accreditation fee to ICANN, a yearly fee for each domain you run , and also a commercial insurance policy which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. And of course youll also need to pay a fee to the administrator of each domain extension you have in your arsenal. Google is its own registry, for instance, but Google is also one of the biggest, richest companies in the world.
Luckily, you dont have to do any of that. If you want to avoid a rising recurring fee and protect your brand, heres what you can do:
Where Is The Best Place To Register A Domain Long Term
Since we are not able to buy a domain name forever, the next best thing we can do is to register a domain name for a long period of time.
Personally, for long term domain name registrations, I find Namecheap to be one of the best options as you can lock down a domain name for a maximum of 10 years.
As for their pricing, the .com registration fee is only $9.60/year. So when applying this to a 10-year period, it comes to a total of only $90.60!
As an added bonus, Namecheap also includes free domain privacy forever which many other domain registrars charge $10-$25/yr for!

So if you are willing to pay more upfront, you can actually save yourself quite a bit of money!

How Do Domain Names Work
Domain names operate under a Domain Name System . It is an internet address book that helps direct visitors to a website that they want to access.
For example, if you want to visit Geekflare , you would enter the URL in your browser and wait for the result. In this tiny amount of time, many communications happen between your browser and internet systems.
First, the request goes to a DNS system that checks if the URL is available in its database or not. If yes, it translates the domain name into the corresponding IP address and locates the server where the website is stored. Hence, you will be capable of visiting Geekflare.
Choose The Right Web Address

In general the best web addresses:
- reflect the name of your business
- are three syllables or less, such as Yahoo!
- are easy to remember, pronounce, spell and type
- are alliterative, for example beyondblue and Firefox
- are also available for registration via social media channels.
Some people argue a good web address is one that people are searching for online and come up in search engines, for example Melbourne plumbers. Use the tools to check high search terms.
Others argue a good web address will be unique or distinct, such as for Google so it stands out in a crowded market, and won’t have to compete for web traffic online because of searches for popular terms.

Get Your Idea Online With The Right Domain Name
When purchasing a domain name, buyers tend to keep their eyes on the price. However, the first consideration should be the domains purpose.
Some registrars focus on selling names for personal blogs. Others concentrate on domain names for businesses, while others favor bulk buyers. Be sure to choose a domain registrar with features that address your domain needs.
Also, remember to choose a domain that captures your idea in its entirety. It should be a name that website visitors can easily remember. The success of your online venture may depend on it.
Happy domain name buying!

Proper Accreditation And A Solid Reputation
We mentioned earlier that registrars need to be accredited by ICANN. Its important to look for that accreditation. There are plenty of unscrupulous entities out there that are pretending to be reputable registrars in an attempt to take your money. To gain that seal of approval from ICANN, companies have to meet a number of requirements. This helps to keep the industry regulated and honest.
ICANN keeps a list of accredited registrars for convenience. It can be used to quickly identify which companies to work with. However, when it comes to reputation, youll need to do a bit more research on your own. Its a good idea to check with the Better Business Bureau and see how long the company has been in business. A good track record of service is always a good sign.

A Few Words Before You Go
While you cant really permanently own a domain name, you can take solace in the fact that no one really owns a domain name, anyway. But theres something wonderful about the vibrancy and flexibility of the internet, the way it shapeshifts and evolves to suit the needs of the users.
In other words, this design actually makes sense when you think about the fact that the growing demands of the internet require a system thats also manageably scalable. So, taxes are paid to the ICANN, domain extension fees are paid to registry operators, and domain lease is paid to domain companies just so that everything can keep functioning properly.
As weve covered, though, this doesnt mean that you cant enjoy the security of being in charge of your domain for as long as you wish. All you have to do is register and pay for your domain for the next 10 years, and then turn on auto-renew. Your domain company will charge your pre-funded account and make sure the domain remains under your name before it expires and someone else gets a hold of it.
