After the AD Bridge Enterprise agent is installed and the Linux or Unix computer is joined to a domain, you can log on with your Active Directory credentials.

  • Log on from the command line. Use a slash character to escape the slash .
ssh example.com\\hoenstiv@localhost

Log into the system console or the text login prompt using an Active Directory user account in the form of DOMAIN\username, where DOMAIN is the Active Directory short name.

After you join a domain for the first time, you must restart the computer before you can log on interactively through the console.

How To Login With A Local Account Without Typing Computer Name

Windows uses the dot as the alias symbol for the local computer:

  • In the username field simply enter .\. The domain below will disappear, and switch to your local computer name without typing it
  • Then specify your local username after the .\. It will use the local account with that username.
  • You can also type the computer name followed by a backslash and the username, and it will do the same thing.

    This way you can logon to a local account on a domain-joined computer on all Windows versions.

    Please note that you wont be able to log in with your local Windows account to a domain controller. After promoting the member-server to DC, the local SAM database becomes unavailable. The only local account on the Active Directory domain controller is the DSRM Administrator.

    Tip. You can use the same trick when you need to use the local user credential to access the shared folder over the network .

    Selecting Your Logon Context In Windows Vista And Windows 7

    Windows Vista and Windows 7 changed how domains are specified. There is no more drop-down list! The reasons why are complex, but essentially Microsoft made this change in the name of security.

    In these newer versions of Windows, if you need to specify a different domain than the default, you must now manually type the domain name with your user name, using this syntax: DOMAIN \ USERNAME. Note the use of the backslash, which is usually above the Enter key on your keyboard. If the Log on to item is present and already shows the correct domain name, you can simply type your user name.

    So, take a look at the most common screen you’ll see when you want to log on, which shows the user who last logged on and prompts for the password:

    Notice the domain, JDFOXMICRO, is specified clearly here, but you can’t edit the domain or the user name just by clicking on it. You must click Switch User and then Other User, just like you do to use a different account even on a single-domain network.

    Only now you will notice that the logon prompt shows the domain underneath the password box, where it says Log on to. On this screen, Windows Vista and Windows 7 always default to the domain that the computer itself is a member of, regardless of who logged in last. In this case, the computer is a member of the JDFOXMICRO domain, so that domain still shows here.

    Notice that domain names and user names on Windows networks are not case-sensitive.

    Working With Active Directory User Accounts

    User accounts are used by people and services so they can be authenticated and access resources. Each user account contains information about the person or service that uses it, and provides a means to grant permissions, apply scripts, assign profiles, and control what actions the user can perform and what he or she can access. Through the account, a set of credentials is created that protects from unauthorized access.

    In Windows Server 2003, two different types of user accounts can be created: local and domain-based user accounts. Local user accounts are used to control access to the computer on which you are working. They are created on Windows Server 2003 by using the Local Users and Groups snap-in, or the Users node under the Local Users and Groups node in the Computer Management utility. Once created, the account information is stored in a local database called the Security Accounts Manager . The account information only applies to the local computer, and isnt replicated to other machines within the domain. When a user logs on to the computer, Windows Server 2003 authenticates the user with this information, and either permits or denies access to the machine.

    Switch From A Microsoft Account To A Local Account In Windows 10/11

    In the latest builds of Windows 10 and 11 , you cannot create a local account when installing Windows. Microsoft recommends using Microsoft accounts instead of local Windows accounts. In order for Windows Setup to prompt you to create a local account, you must disable your Internet connection when you install Windows.

    In Windows, you can use three types of accounts to sign in to the device:

    • Local account these accounts are stored in the local Windows security account database . You can list local users on a computer with the command: net user
    • Domain user accounts are stored on the Active Directory domain controllers
    • Microsoft account the account is stored in the Microsoft cloud. Its advantage is that you can use it on any computer, and the basic user settings with a Microsoft account will be the same on any Windows computer. For the Microsoft account, as well as for local users, a separate profile is created in the C:\Users directory . Any local account can be linked to a Microsoft account.

    Hint. Can you sign in with a Microsoft account without an Internet connection? Of course! You only need to be connected to the Internet when you create a Microsoft account or switch to a local account. After the first login, the credentials of that account are cached locally, and subsequent logins dont require an Internet connection.

    If you do not want to use the Microsoft account on Windows, you can switch to a traditional local Windows account.

    How Do I Login To My Domain

    How do I log on to another domain in Windows 7? To log on to a different domain, you must first type in the domain name. If your computer has the name WORKSTATION2, click on the computers name in the user name box and type in the domain name. Once youve typed in the domain name, Windows will change the Log on to item to reflect the correct domain name.

    On the Computer Name/Domain Changes page, click the button Change Computer Name. Select Member of a domain and then Type a domain name.     To sign in to this computer using an account from a domain other than the default domain, include the domain name in the user name box using this syntax: domain\username.
