Redirect An Old WordPress Domain Permanently

How to Add Multiple Domains to One Hosting Account and Install WordPress (Namecheap & CPanel)

The final step when changing the WordPress domain is to create a 301 redirect a URL redirection from your old domain to the new one. The redirect will carry over page ranking values, ensuring that your SEO efforts wont be lost when moving to a new domain.

We recommend keeping your old domain active for a while. This will allow users not aware of the domain change to reach the site and help notify search engines about the redirection.

Lets dive into the hPanel to edit the .htaccess file and create a 301 redirect:

  • Go to hPanel-> Files -> File Manager.
  • Select your old domain and click Go to File Manager.
  • Find the .htaccess file in the public_html directory.
  • Right-click and choose Edit.
  • Replace http://yoursitename.com with your new domain, and insert the following code.
  • #Options +FollowSymLinksRewriteEngine onRewriteRule ^$ http://yoursitename.com/$1
  • Press Save & Close.
  • Similar to modifying wp-config.php, you can complete this step with an FTP client.

Import The Database Tables To Your New Site

The final step is to import the database tables.

In the hosting interface for your new site, go to phpMyAdmin. In MyKinsta, you access this via the Info screen for your site.

If you accidentally created a WordPress installation already, or you need to override an existing WordPress site, youll need to drop the existing database tables. Select all of the tables in the same way as you did when exporting them from your old site, and click the With selected: dropdown list. Select Drop.

You will be prompted to confirm that you want to delete the tables, and then everything in your database will be deleted. If you have any doubt that you want to do this, make a backup of the database first by exporting the tables.

Once youve dropped your database tables, or if you didnt have a database in the first place, youll need to import the tables from your old site to your new site.

In phpMyAdmin, click the Import tab. In the File to import section, click the Choose file button and select the SQL file on your computer that you downloaded already.

Go to the bottom of the page and click the Go button. PhpMyAdmin will upload the SQL file and use it to create database tables for your new site which will be identical to the ones in the old site.

cPanel has made it easier to manage your domains in a single place. In this post, we will go over how to add another domain to your existing cPanel account. This tutorial will require that you have a hosting account and have access to cPanel to add the domain.

Lets recap with some example information for the necessary DNS information:

    • cpanel.rocks The accounts main domain. This domain was set up for you by your hosting provider. In other words, we already control this domain.
    • cpdocs.com The domain we are going to add to our account.
    • ns1.cpanel.rocks The servers primary nameserver.
    • ns2.cpanel.rocks The servers secondary nameserver.
    • 209.59.172.159 The IP address our addon domain will use.
