Paying For The Domain
If a registration renewal price increases after you receive a renewal notice, DreamHost will honor the quoted rate in the notice. For example, if your quoted renewal is $9.99/year and the price then increases to $11.99/year, DreamHost will still bill you at $9.99/year.
If you owe something for the registration renewal, the cost is listed in the drop-down menu in the screenshot above. This charge must be paid up front for manual renewals. Auto-renewals are automatically charged to your account.
Expired Domains And Failed Payments
If we can’t charge the credit card on file for your site, your domain will remain active for 15 days past the renewal date. We’ll make additional attempts to charge your card every five days after the initially failed charge. After the third attempt, 15 days after the payment was due, the domain will officially expire and will no longer connect to your site.
After your domain expires, you’ll have a 30 day grace period to renew your domain through Squarespace. To renew an expired domain, ensure that your site is active and has a valid credit card linked, then reactivate your domain in your Domains panel.
After 30 days , the domain will be released back to the registrar. How you reactivate the domain depends on the domain’s registrar:
- If your domain’s registrar is Squarespace Domains LLC, contact us and we’ll help you reactivate the domain.
- If your domain’s registrar is Tucows, you can use this form to request they renew your domain. If they can renew the domain, the renewal price is up to them, and you can connect it to your site as a third-party domain.

How Do I Know If A Domain Name Is Available
At first glance, a domain name that does not display a website may seem available, but it could still be reserved by someone. You can check whether it is available by searching it on our tool. If it is not available, you can choose from a selection of several hundred other domain extensions.
The different statuses are listed below:
- Domain name available for registration. You can reserve it.
- Domain name not available for registration. It has been registered, which means somebody else has already reserved it.
- Domain name transferable. You can transfer it from your current domain name registrar to OVHcloud.
When you decide on a domain name, we advise checking its availability with the Intellectual Property Office , to see whether it has been registered as a trade mark. If the domain has been registered, you will not be able to use it legally. You can also protect your domain name by registering your brand as a trademark.

My Domain Has Expired What Should I Do
When your domain name expires it enters a three-stage Redemption Grace Period . During RGP you are able to renew the domain before it is deleted and re-enters the market.
Auto-Renew Grace PeriodFor about 29 days* after the expiration date, your domain name can be renewed at standard rates. In order to renew your domain during this period, call or open a ticket with our billing department. Once the renewal payment is processed, your domain name will be reactivated. You may experience a period of 1-48 hours for DNS propagation.
Redemption Grace Period29 days* after the expiration date, your domain will enter the Redemption Grace Period, which typically lasts 30 days*. When a domain enters the Redemption Grace Period it is being managed by ICANN/Enom and it is removed from the zone file, so the website and email will stop working. GreenGeeks no longer has control of a domain in the Redemption Grace Period. In order to renew the domain during this period, the fees are $80 plus the cost of the domain renewal.
When a domain name expires, the website may display an advertising page set by ICANN/Enom. GreenGeeks does not control and cannot change that page. The domains expiration date may also be extended. That does not mean the domain is active. The name servers may also change to dns1.name-services.com, dns2.name-services.com, etc.
How Often Do You Have To Renew Domain Names
You usually must renew your domain name once a year to keep it active. The company that issued your domain name should remind you to do that before your domain name expires. The consequences to letting a domain name expire could be significant depending on how your business uses its website.

Prevent The Problem Before It Happens
Pay attention to email headers from the company that issued your domain name. One of those may be a reminder to renew your domain name. Go Daddy, for instance, sends multiple warning emails to customers. Many registrars also provide customers the option to sign up for automatic renewal. Look into that option if you prefer not to renew manually. Renewing manually often requires nothing more than logging in to your account at the registrars site and using an automated renewal tool. If your domain name does expire, you may have a limited amount of time to reclaim it. Review your registrars documentation to learn how it handles expired domain names.

To cancel your .de domain, you need to send an email to Shopify’s German support team at at least 5 days before the domain’s scheduled renewal date. The email must contain a completed Domain Termination/Deletion formand specify whether you want your domain to be cancelled immediately or at the end of the registration period.
After you provide the required information, the German support team submits it on your behalf. When your domain is cancelled, it’s immediately deleted from the registry and becomes available for anyone to purchase.

What Happens When A Domain Expires
There are a variety of steps that will occur during a domain name expiration:
Step 1:
Domain expiration alerts: Prior to domain name registration expiration, Domain.com will begin sending reminders to you via email. At least two alerts will be sent before expiration, and one within five days of expiration.
Step 2:
Domain name registration expires: If the domain has not been renewed by the owner prior to the expiry date, the domains status will be changed to what is called a Renewal Grace Period. Under this status, you can still renew the domain name without incurring additional fees for a grace period of thirty days. As early as one day after expiration, your domain name will be deactivated and replaced with a parking page indicating the domain name has expired, and other services you have associated with the domain name may no longer function.
Step 3:
Renewal grace period ends: Once this period ends, the expired domain names status is changed to Registrar Hold. During this thirty-day period, the original domain owner may pay a redemption fee as well as the renewal fee.
Step 4:
Step 5:
Step 6:
End of registry grace period: If this grace period ends without the domain name being renewed, it will then be put under the status of pending delete. If no actions of restoration occur on the part of the original owner, registry or registrar, the domain will eventually be deleted. This deletion will then release that domain name back for general registration.

The Domain Name Market
Of the hundreds of millions of domain names that are already in circulation, some are very popular. There is a secondary market for the purchase of domain names put up for sale by their current holders. The most generic domains can sell at very high prices, depending on the sector they are linked to. The price is set by the seller, and generally takes the commercial potential of this domain name into account. One of the most popular SEO strategies is to buy back a domain name, which enables the new holder to benefit from its longevity.
