When I purchased my domain name, MelyssaGriffin.com, I had the option of creating an email address through my webhost

That is, until I realized I could have both! Id heard that it was possible to use Gmail with a custom domain name, but always put off learning how to do it because I expected it to be difficult and time-consuming. Luckily, it was neither of those things, and I was able to create two professional, custom domain email addresses within minutes.

Without a domain, you cant get a business email. Before you are able to generate work emails for yourself or your team members, youll need to buy a domain name. The good news is that it can be well worth it, allowing you to register with certain other business-exclusive products like pro business invoicing.

Contrary Way To Set Up Gmail And Your Custom Domain Email

Step 1:Go to Google domains and click on setup, which will take you to a page where you can choose what type of email you want to set up.

Step 2:After selecting your mail account, select set up. It will direct you to a page to complete the setup.

Step 3:On the next page, enter your information. If you have an SSL certificate, enter that into the appropriate field.

Step 4:Enter the password for your new email address and click next.

Step 5:Click continue.

    Some of you may have wondered how I got my own domain name for my email address. I thought it was kinda cool to have an email address with a domain names based on my condominium where I live.     And since Ive bought my domain from www.GoDaddy.com, Id be sharing how youd do it if you bought your domain from GoDaddy too. But Id imagine the steps would be very similar as well if you bought your domain elsewhere.

    2. Register for a Google Apps account

    Create A Regular Free Gmail Account

    To get started, create a regular free Gmail account e.g. username@gmail.com. If you already have a Gmail account, you can use your existing account.

    However, remember that the emails for your custom domain will be mixed in with any emails to your regular Gmail account, so it might be simpler to create a separate account if youre already receiving a lot of email at your Gmail address.

    Connect To Your Outlookcom Account In Outlook

    How to configure Gmail with my domain?

    Youre done with the web configuring part and now it is time to get everything into Outlook. This is an easy process by using Auto Account Setup.

    • File-> Add Account

    Depending on your version of Outlook, youll get one of the dialogs below.

    When you get this screen, fill out your email address and press the Connect button. When youve already stored your credentials for this account in Windows, the account will be added directly. If not, youll get prompted for your password. When you have Two-Step Verification enabled for your Outlook.com or Microsoft Account, then youll also be prompted for additional confirmation such as by entering a code obtained via an SMS text message or the Authenticator app.

    When you get the dialog shown above, fill out your name, email address and password. When you have Two-Step Verification enabled for your Outlook.com or Microsoft Account, then youll have to use a special App Password instead of your regular password.

    Can I Switch My Free Business Email Account To Another Provider If Needed

    Yes, you need to first setup a professional email account using the steps mentioned above. Then you can use email forwarding to auto-forward any incoming emails to your Gmail, Yahoo, or other free email accounts to your newly created custom domain email address.

    You can then use the new business email to correspond with clients while ensuring that any messages to your old email account are also received in the new account.

    Id heard rumors that you could do this, but I could never figure out how! I hated my hosting email interface, but I wasnt willing to give up the professional domain email address, so I set up Mac Mail to work with my hosting email. Its ok, but Ive often lamented not being able to use the awesome features that work with gmail, like Boomerang. Now I can have the best of both worlds! Thanks!

    Verifying Your Domain Name For Google Workspace

    To sign up for Google Workspace and start using its services, you must first own a verified domain. This ensures that no one is using your domain name for Google services without your permission. Note that, if you bought your domain name from a Google partner when signing up for Google Workspace, its already verified.

    If you have no clue about the verification process, do not worry. Google Workspace has a setup wizard with instruction on how to verify your domain name based on your domain host.

    Smtp Service For Sending Emails

    How to setup a custom email address using your own domain name with Google

    The next piece of the puzzle is to have an SMTP service for sending emails.

    If you have setup an email inbox at your web host, then you can use their SMTP settings. .

    Alternatively, if youre wanting to use a separate dedicated email sending service, a great option is Mailgun. Mailgun offers the first 1250 emails per month for free. If you think youll go over that, then additional emails are only $0.0001 so an additional 1000 sent emails will only cost $1.

    There are others out there that offer more emails per month on their free tier such as MailerSend which offers your first 12,000 per month for free HOWEVER MailerSend cant be used with Gmail because it doesnt allow you to choose the username that emails will be sent from.

    If using Mailgun, when you setup the domain, do NOT setup a subdomain, like they recommend. Instead, just set up the main domain. In addition, do NOT add the MX records that they recommend in the DNS settings. If you add those, it will kill your email forwarding!

    To setup the domain youll need to add DNS entries to verify the domain for sending. Once you add the DNS entries, it will generally take about 5 mins before the domain will be verified. Sometimes though the DNS changes might take an hour or two to be picked up.

    Setting Up Email On A WordPress Domain

    Given that something like 70% of websites are hosted using WordPress, lets cover how to set up email on a WordPress domain. For the sake of the demo, were going to demonstrate how to use their Professional Email service. At the time of this edit, the service cost $3.50/month.

  • Open up WordPress and login to your account.
  • Now, go to My Site > Upgrades > Email.
  • Locate Professional Email and select it.
  • Now, fill out the information and click Add Email.
  • You can click on Add another mailbox if you need it.
  • Go through the payment process and then click on Manage email.
