Like Im all sparkly and elegant, running my own business. And proud!

And when I work with other entrepreneurs using a Gmail domain for their email address, I feel a little sad that theyre not as professional. So here, please, take a little glitter and set up your domains address via Gmail.

Note: When you purchase your hosting, you likely get an email address, too. If you need help setting it up, let me know.

Head over to your Host to find your email configuration. Heres where you find it on Bluehost:

Log in to your Bluehost account, choose Hosting, then email. Choose the email configuration tab and record the name of your mail servers and supported ports.

From your inbox, choose the gear symbol on the right. Choose settings.

If you are using Siteground, login, head to your cPanel and the Email section to choose Email Accounts. From there, you should see a list of your emails. Click on the more button for the applicable address.

When you choose Configure Email Client, you will see the account details. Leave the tab or screen open to aid you as you continue setting up your account in Gmail.

Heading back to your Gmail

Choose the Accounts and Import tab. Choose Add a POP3 mail account you own.

Enter your email address.

Upon completion, you have the opportunity to send email from Gmail on behalf of your domain account.

Ensure your name is showing, and yes, treat as an alias. Move forward by clicking Next Step.

Forwarding Emails To Gmail Account

Now that we have the necessary data, its time to set the Gmail account so it can receive messages sent to your custom domain email. Heres how:

  • Log in to your Gmail account, click on the gear icon and select Settings -> Accounts and Import.
  • Choose Add a mail account under the Check mail from other accounts section.
  • After you entered your domain email, click Next -> Import emails from my other account -> Next.
  • Fill in the details using the server information we located earlier. The server were using is pop.hostinger.com, and the port is 995.
  • Check the boxes as needed, but we recommend to tick the first three boxes as you can keep two copies of the same messages on different platforms, use a secure connection, and label incoming messages according to its original email destination.
  • Click Add Account to finalize the settings.
  • Youll be prompted with the option to send emails from your custom address. If you only need Gmail to receive emails and choose No, youll be all set! But if you want the platform to be your one-stop destination to receive and send messages, select Yes and continue to the next part.
  • Register Your Domain Name

Choose a reliable domain registrar like or Namecheap. Search for an available .com, .co, or other popular domain with a combination of your full name, or your company name.

Stay away from untrusted or cheezy domains like .biz and others. After youve chosen your domain name, proceed to checkout, and you will have become the proud owner of a new domain name.

If you are setting up your email on a cell phone or tablet, refer to: How to set up your email for Gmail on mobile.

  • Browse to Gmail and log in
  • Select the Settings icon from the top-right menu, then choose Settings from the dropdown list
  • Select Accounts and Import
  • Select Add a mail account
  • Enter your Email address, select Next
  • Select the second option and select Next
  • Gmail will automatically add certain settings, but check that:
  • The Username is the full email address
  • The Password is included
  • The POP Server has mail. in front of the domain name e.g. mail.example.com*
  • Port is 995
  • Always use a secure connection is checked
  • Select Add Account
  • Your account has now been set up to receive your domain email, but you can now continue to set up the account to send mail from your domain. Select Yes and Next
  • Untick Treat as an alias
  • Select Next Step
  • Send mail through your SMTP server? Select the second option. The default setting is to send mail using Gmail SMTP servers, and while this will work, it is not recommended. The reasons are that Gmail servers are more likely to be blacklisted for spam abuse, and certain mail servers will not receive mail from domains that are not associated with that particular server.
  • The current dialogue box opens up to add the SMTP details. Ensure that:
  • The SMTP Server has smtp. in front of the domain name e.g. smtp.example.com*
  • The Username is the full email address
  • The Password is included

The Email Addresses Might Not Be Valid

You can never be sure of the quality of email addresses you didnt acquire yourself.

With a purchased email list, the incentive is often quantity over quality. Even if the emails are valid, people switch jobs, companies switch email address formats and change names.

Despite their best efforts, most data brokers arent able to keep their lists 100% up to date. This means you will likely get hard bounces every time you add emails to your list. If your bounce rate spikes, your deliverability will suffer.

    Register Your Custom Domain

Next, youll create the domain your business provides for customers to interact with. If youve already got a fully functional website or youve registered the domain you want to use, you can probably skip this step.

Otherwise, youll need to select a registrar for your domain that includes email forwarding. While domains vary greatly in cost, many all-in-one webhosting services offer free domain registration as part their hosting package.

Here are a few domain registrars which offer email forwarding:

    • BlueHost
    • Namecheap
    • Siteground

Please note: if your host doesnt have email forwarding tools as part of its service, youll need to transfer your domain to one that does. Most major hosts have processes that make this extremely easy, so worry not!
