How To Change Your DNS (Domain Nameservers)

Once the whole transfer process is complete and youve tested the website, there are a number of things you must do to finish the transition. Keep in mind that these are necessary steps to ensure that your old visitors keep visiting your website, as well as to be certain that your site is performing as planned. So, let us begin.

Where Can I Get A Domain Name

You can get your own domain name by paying as little as $8.95 a year for registration with ICANN-approved sites such as Go Daddy. You can find out if the name you want is still available by using the free search tool on the sites.

We recommend GoDaddy, DirectNIC, or RegisterFly – or getting a domain name free with hosting at iPowerWeb.

Your domain name can only be registered if it is made-up of the following:

1. Letters ,

2. Numbers and

3. Dashes or hyphens though not at the beginning or end of the name.

4. A minimum of 3 and a maximum of 63 characters for .co.uk & .org.uk addresses. Two character domain names are only accepted if one is a number and one a letter.

5. A minimum of 2 with a maximum of 67 characters for .com, .org & .net addresses.

Updating Your Domain Name Records

If youre sure your new site is good to go, you can begin the process of updating your domain name records. You do this by changing the DNS record on your site.

Briefly, a domain name server record is the instruction that tells the user which IP address to go to when they click on your domain. You want them to go to your new site when they click, rather than your old one.

Your DNS record will be held by a domain registrar, which will probably be the place you first bought your domain. It could be your old web host, but not necessarily.

Switch the information at your registrar to point the user to your new host. It should be easy to do, but make sure you enter the information correctly, or no one will be able to visit your new site, or your old one.

What if your domain is registered with your old web hosting company?

If its the case that your domain registrar is your old web host, you may want to transfer registrars too.

Like changing web hosts, its a fiddly process, but perfectly possible if you are methodical, and follow the right steps in the right order.

Move The Files And Database To The New Host

The next step is to manually migrate your websites files and database to the new provider. To do this, youll need access to your new hosting accounts FTP client.

Pro Tip

Since the database files are in a .zip format, decompress or unzip them before continuing.

To upload your website files:

  • Connect FileZilla to your new hosting account and navigate to the public_html folder in the Remote Site column.
  • In the Local Site column, locate the folder with the site files you want to upload. In our case, this folder is Website Backup.
  • Right-click the folder and select Upload.
  • To upload your website database to Hostinger:

  • Open your new accounts hPanel and navigate to Databases -> MySQL Databases.
  • Create a new database by entering the new database name, username, and password in the corresponding fields and click Create. Take note of these new credentials and make sure not to forget them.
  • Head back to Databases and click on phpMyAdmin. Find your newly created database and click Enter phpMyAdmin.

  • Add your new database details in these lines of code:
  • Save the changes.
  • Is It Worth Transferring Your Domain

A domain transfer can really pay off, but website owners should consider each move on a case-by-case basis. If you find yourself dissatisfied with your domain providers service, its not always necessary to make the switch. Web hosting providers normally offer many different storage or server options . Its therefore often sufficient to simply change to a different package from the same provider.

However, if youre unhappy with the basic conditions of your domain provider, such as the quality of the customer service or the range of functions available, its worth considering the move. Its also a good idea for those who have several registered domains on different providers to consider transferring the domains to the same domain provider in order to keep costs and efforts to a minimum.

This is definitely the most important part of moving your website to a new hosting company. Perform backups of all your website’s files and databases to ensure that you’re covered in case something goes wrong while moving your website. In addition, up-to-date backups will ensure that you will transfer the latest version of your website to your new web host.

After carefully making backups of your website, you can start transferring the files and import databases to your new web hosting. For this process it’s recommended to use FTP programs such as FileZilla to upload the files to the new host. You can also contact your hosting company and see if they provide website migration services in case you don’t feel comfortable with the process.

Quick Tip: While using WordPress, you’re really lucky as there are plugins that completely take care of this whole process. For example WordPress plugins like All-in-One WP Migration will copy / transfer all your files and database to the new hosting company with only a few simple clicks. It couldn’t be easier!

For those who are running a static website , all you need to do is download everything from your existing hosting server and upload them to your new host according to the old folder structure. The move can be done quickly using a FTP / sFTP agent. I recommend using FileZilla if you are looking for one.

The Simple Guide To Transferring A Domain To Another Registrar

One of the most important steps in creating a great website is choosing the right domain name. Popular domain names go quickly so, once you’ve found a great fit for your site, use a domain name search to make sure it’s not taken, or pay the asking price if the owner is looking to sell.

Finding an available name isn’t enough, however, since you also need to register your domain name with a domain name system registrar. In some cases, your registrar can also be your web hosting service, but this isn’t required you can choose to host and register your site with different providers.

But what happens if you want to change your domain registrar? That’s where a domain transfer comes into play.

Second Step: Canceling Our Hosting Service

Enigma of IT: How to change a computer name, join a domain ...

After waiting at least three days, you can return to our site to cancel the hosting service and stop the monthly fee:

    • Login to the My Account control panel
    • Click Billing and Contact Information
    • Click Cancel Hosting Service
    • Choose Finalize Hosting Cancellation and follow the instructions

When you do this, well convert your domain name to a normal domain name only account with our company.

There may be a prorated domain registration fee to cover the domain name registration until it expires. For example, if you cancel a .com website after nine months of hosting service, and you want to keep the domain name for use with another Web hosting company, we would charge you one-quarter of the annual domain name only fee to cover your use of the domain name until it expires in three months’ time.

By the way, we don’t charge any hosting cancellation fees and we don’t have fixed-term contracts, so you’re free to cancel at any time.

You’re welcome to keep the domain name itself registered through Tiger Technologies for as long as you want, even if you use another company for your hosting service. Simply renew the domain name with us when we send you messages saying that it’s going to expire.

    Run The Migration Process

Now its time to start the migration process in earnest. Navigate to https://yoursite.com/installer.php , this should lead you to this screen:

Make sure the installer gives you a Pass for archive and validation, then check the terms and conditions box and click Next at the bottom. This will start the deployment process.

After that, you will be asked to insert your database host, name, username, and password.

You should have those at hand from before. You can use the Test Database button to make sure everything is working. Then click Next again. The plugin will import the database.

In the next step, you have the chance to replace mentions of your old URL with the new one. Make sure the right URL is in the field! Duplicator will then finalize the process.

The final screen gives you a link to log into your site and reports if everything went well. Make sure to log in and check if everything is working as it should. Also, dont forget to follow Duplicators instructions to clean up after yourself.

Point Your Domain Name To The New Server

Lets recap what weve completed so far. You now have a new host and have transferred your websites files and database to a new account. You also have access to your new hosting accounts control panel.

Now youve reached the final step in your hosting transfer process pointing your sites domain name to the new server. To do this, you need to update your Domain Name System settings.

This is a critical step when switching web hosts. If you dont point your sites domain to the new server, visitors wont be able to access your website.

To put it simply, DNS translates websites domain names into IP addresses. A websites DNS record essentially provides instructions to web browsers and informs them where to go to load web pages.

If youre transferring to Hostinger, youll know that your domain is not yet pointing correctly if a message is displayed at the top of your hPanel saying, Your domain is not pointing to Hostinger.

Click Learn more to view Hostingers nameservers, then select Go to tutorial to be redirected to our guide that shows you how to point your domain to Hostinger.

If you dont receive this pop-up message, follow the next steps to change your domains nameservers manually via hPanel. This will update your sites DNS record to match the new IP address.
