You can get domain distinguished name for current logged in user in active directory using PowerShell as below

Get-ADDomain -Current LoggedOnUser

PowerShell Get-ADDomain cmdlet find domain name in active directory for current logged on user.

Whats In A Domain Name

Domain names function on the Internet in a manner similar to a physical address in the physical world. Each part of the domain name provides specific information. These pieces of information enable web browsers to locate the web page. The naming system is closely regulated in order to prevent confusion or duplicate addresses. As demand increased exponentially, a new Internet Protocol version, or IPv6, was created to expand the number of domain names available.

Setting Up The Global Domain Name For Your Network

To set up the global domain name for your home network, go to System > Settings > General. Then enter a hostname for your OPNsense router and the default domain name for your entire network. In the example below, I would be able to access the OPNsense web administration page by going to router.homenetworkguy.com.

Note: It is not necessary to have a real domain name registered if you are just using the domain name internally on your network. However, if you do have a real domain name , you may also use it internally for devices on your network. If you use a real domain name, your local DNS server on your router will know how to resolve names for devices on your local network even if they those hostnames are not included the public DNS records. You only need to add/update the IP addresses of domains/subdomains of public DNS records if you plan to host publicly accessible services on your network.

Even though you do not have to use a real domain name for your local devices, you cannot simply use any domain name you want. The help message says to avoid using local as the domain name since it interferes with the Bonjour protocol, for instance. You should also avoid using domain names of real websites that you plan to visit. I imagine you will not be able to reach such websites since the local DNS server on your router will be trying to resolve that domain name to devices on your local network.

Viewing A List Of All Hostnames

The easiest way to see a list of hostnames for all of your network devices is to go to Leases page by navigating to Services > DHCPv4 > Leases. It will show the MAC addresses, hostnames, IP addresses, online/offline status, and if it is statically mapped. The page is fairly self-explanatory. I am not including a screenshot since I would have to blot out most of my device information .

Now you should be able to refer to devices in your home network by their hostname and domain name !

Most of the time, your computer automatically uses your internet service provider’s settings for DNS servers, but you can edit these through the configuration menu.

How Can I Find Out Or Set My Local Domain Name

Hi all,

How can I find out my local domain name or set one within the router config?

I am using the RAX200 as my DHCP on my local network and the router& modem just as my modem.

Reason for asking, is that i am tinkering with some home automation, NAS and a Pi-hole Ad-Blocker.

If anyone has any thoughts or advice it would be apprecaited.

What does that mean? Domain names are not router territory. Or are you talking about DNS?

If you want your own WAN IP address, use one of the usual tools.

Create Dhcp Static Mappings

If you have any static IPs you would like to set for some of your devices such as your server, you have the option to specify a hostname. This hostname will be used instead of the hostname set on the device itself if the DHCP Static Mappings option is set.

You also have the ability to set a different domain name for the static mapping for the device if you so desire. It is likely unnecessary in most home network environments, but perhaps it is useful if you are hosting multiple domains on your network.

I’m showing below a sample of my Meraki config. The SSID I named “TEST SSID” is on my domain and the network connection is simply plugged into one of my HPE switches. Make sure if you already have a DHCP server on your network to choose “Local Lan” for the client IP assignment. Sorry, i should have been clearer!

In short, I am trying to toying with some home automation and using a Pi-hole. I am using the Pi-hole as a DNS and the RAXX200 as my DHCP. In order for me to get device names showing in phile, without using it as my DHCP too i need to forward the requests to my router’s IP address and it requires a “Local domain name”.

I have had this working on an old router where i could set this, but i kep the default supplied which was “lan”. I.e. ipad.lan

Join The Domain And Log On By Using The It Staff Computer Configuration Method

Domain member users with domain-joined wireless client computers can use a temporary wireless profile to connect to an 802.1X-authenticated wireless network without first connecting to the wired LAN. This temporary wireless profile is called a bootstrap wireless profile.

A bootstrap wireless profile requires the user to manually specify their domain user account credentials, and does not validate the certificate of the Remote Authentication Dial-In User Service server running Network Policy Server .

After wireless connectivity is established, Group Policy is applied on the wireless client computer, and a new wireless profile is issued automatically. The new policy uses the computer and user account credentials for client authentication.
