Contact The Domain Registrar Or Participate In An Expired Domain Auction

Where to Buy Your Domain? Best Domain Name Registrars 2021

Most domain registrars offer a 20-30 day period for domains that are expired before placing them into an auction. Note that the rules between domain name registrars may vary when it comes to reclaiming lost domain names.

If less than 20 days after the domains expiration date, try contacting the domain registrar. They often offer assistance to reclaim and renew the lost domain name.

However, the cost of reclaiming the lost domain will not be at the annual renewal rate, so expect to pay roughly around $100 or so to reclaim the lost domain name.

If the domain has gone to auction, youâll have to participate in the expired domain auction. Get ready to hope and pray to outbid others at a reasonable price, not outside your budget.

Youre starting a business or undergoing a rebrand, and youve come up with the perfect domain name. The only problem is that the domain is already registered. In this case, you have one of two options: You can either choose an alternative domain name, or you can fork over the cash to the current owner. If your heart is set on your first choice, this article will explain how you can go about acquiring that domain.

Beware of buying the same domain with a different top-level domain.

One unfortunate occurrence I see all too often is when buyers decide to go with a different top-level domain of their first-choice domain. At first glance, this strategy makes sense. After all, its the same name, and its much cheaper! Registrars like GoDaddy.com and Domain.com will often suggest this option when you search for a .com domain that is already taken.

It is a fact that internet users typically enter .com at the end of the domain name when they type into the URL bar. This means if you decide to go with a .net or a .biz, users who end up at the .com could have a much harder time finding you. All in all, I believe its a better decision to pay up for your first-choice domain, and if that doesnt fit your budget, go with a different name altogether.

Visit the domain to see how its being used.

Find the owner of the domain.

Registration date.

Verify Domain Name Ownership

The final step is to verify the domain ownership through the email address you used when registering the domain. The email usually arrives within a few minutes after finishing the domain setup. Simply click the verification link in the email to verify your contact information.

If the email doesnt arrive, resend the request from the control panel. We recommend doing it immediately, as waiting for 15 days or more will lead to a temporary suspension from the registry.

Thats all there is to it. Now you know how to buy a website domain name and complete the initial registration process.

Expert Tip

To make the most out of your newly acquired domain, consider authorizing it with the Google Search Console. This will provide you with important analytical insights and make it easier for Google to crawl the content of your site.

First, log into your Google account and head to the Search Console page. If you want your entire domain to be crawled, enter the URL in the bar on the left. Once thats done, click Continue and youll be presented with a code. Then, copy it and do not close the tab.

Now, log into your Hostinger account, head to the hPanel, and on to the DNS Zone Editor. Under Manage DNS Records, select TXT as the Type. Unless youre only adding a specific subdomain to the Search Console, leave @ as the Name. Next, copy the code youve received previously as the TXT Value. We recommend leaving the TTL Value as the default. To finish it all off, click on Add Record.

Before we go any further, its worth noting that its only possible to register an existing domain name with a valid domain extension that other people or businesses dont already own.

Were going to dive deeper into the steps to register a domain name from where to get a domain name to finally getting into the website registration process.

Here are the five steps to buy domain names:

Your Domain Isnt Registered To Your Name And Address

If your domain isnt registered to you, most likely it will be registered to your web designer, IT administrator or a member of your staff:

If its registered to someone else that works for your company, then simply ask that they transfer it to one of the directors of the company someone who has a legal responsibility towards its interests. Whilst this might be a difficult topic to raise, its a lot easier to handle it now than to wait until the person leaves or has left especially given that a disgruntled ex-employee could choose to disable access to your website, or divert traffic to a different location.

To transfer the domain to someone else, they just need to get in touch with the Domain Registrar shown on the listing. Depending on your domain the process will vary slightly and may incur a small fee.

If your domain is registered to a company or agency that you work with you have a couple of options. Firstly, you can get a statement from them, in writing, that you own the domain and that they will hand it over to you on demand. Alternatively, you can ask them to update the domain records to reflect your name and address.

The worst case scenario is that you cant get in touch with the person who your domain is registered to either because theyre refusing to respond to you, you dont know them, or theyve just disappeared.

Keep An Eye Out For Renewal Reminders

ICANN policy requires registrars to send you two renewal reminders approximately one month and one week before expiration of a domain name. Here Are The Things You Need To Know Before Buying Expired Domains

Here are the important things you must check when you buy expired domains from any marketplace.

People are selling GoDaddy expired domains on various platforms, but they will only show you right parameters of the domain and hide all other important things.

make sure you read these 5 points very carefully before getting into domain flipping business.

Can An Expired Domain Name Be Bought

  • If the expiry date is 1-30 days in the past, it is within the redemption or grace period. This means it can be recovered by the most recent Registrant of the domain, but for a greater fee than if the domain been renewed on time initially.
  • If the previous Registrant fails to renew their domain after 30 days, they forfeit ownership of the domain. Anyone who has registered an interest in purchasing the domain name will be informed when it comes up for sale, and invited to make a purchase.
  • If there are no backorders placed on a domain, or the person who placed the backorder is no longer interested in purchasing the domain, it is usually auctioned off to the highest bidder. The auction period tends to last 7 days.
  • Any domain name that is not sold during the auction period is referred to as a closeout domain name, meaning it is entered back into the Registry. Resellers like Novanym are like middlemen, able to hold domain names from the Registry and transfer ownership of a domain to any person or business who purchases that domain.
  • A deleted domain name, in the context of expired domain names, is one that has been dropped from the Registryno record of it exists. So long as you get in there first, a deleted domain name can be registered in the exact same way as any other unregistered domain name. There is, however, considerable competition for dropped domain names, meaning the most effective method of acquiring a domain name is through a reseller.

    Run A Domain Name Search

Now that you have found a registrar through which to register your domain, the next step is to perform a domain name search.

When choosing a domain name, make sure to pick the right domain extension as well its the suffix at the end of a web address. Domain name extensions are also referred to as top-level domains .

There are different types of domain extensions available, such as:

    • Country Code Top-Level Domain . This kind of TLD represents a specific country, letting both users and search engines know that a site is designed for visitors from a particular region. An example of this is the .us domain, which is the ccTLD for the United States.
    • Sponsored Top-Level Domain . Its a type of TLD restricted to certain types of groups and organizations. Some of sTLD examples include .mil, .gov, and .edu.
    • Generic Top-Level Domain . Its the most common type of TLD it doesnt rely on a country code and can be used for general purposes. A few examples of gTLDs include .com, .org, and .net. This category also includes new extensions, such as .xyz, .club, and .online.

When deciding on the extension that is suitable for your domain, look for a TLD that represents the purpose of your website. Choosing the wrong suffix can confuse visitors and make your brand name prone to being misinterpreted.

Will My Website Go Down During A Domain Name Transfer

    Nope!

When you transfer a domain name from one registrar to another, thats literally all youre doing. Youre not moving your email or hosting. During the domain transfer process, your nameservers dont change theyll stay pointed to the same pre-transfer nameservers.

Now, its another story if youre changing your hosting provider along with your domain registrar. If you decide to change your website host, follow these steps to avoid site downtime:

    • Import your DNS records to your new hosting provider
    • Double-check to make sure the DNS information is correct.
    • Change the nameservers at the originating registrar.
    • You may have to wait for propagation it could take 24-48 hours.

Another scenario to consider is if youre using the default nameservers of your current registrar. Many registrars offer access to free nameservers so long as your domain remains registered with them. If you decide to transfer your domain, you could lose access to those nameservers.

If youre unsure whether youre using default nameservers, ask your registrar BEFORE you transfer your domain. We recommend keeping your domain pointed to your hosting providers nameservers.

    Uncovering Secrets With Dns

How to Buy & Sell EXPIRED Domain Names! | The Journey

Every domain has DNS info that is public. You can browse this on many sites but I like to use leafdns.com. DNS is what points domain services to different servers like pointing your email to Google and your website to Bluehost. This may not tell you who owns your domain but it can tell you HOW your domain is being used which may be an important step in recovering your website files if youve lost those in addition to the domain. I often use this when Im on a call and a prospect doesnt even know where their site is hosted. It makes me look really smart!

    Placing Ads On The Site

If youve ever typed an address into your browser expecting or hoping a legitimate site would appear and instead were greeted with a site full of Google or Yahoo! ads, you probably encountered a squatted domain. Some squatters purchase domains that contain common, everyday words in the hopes Internet surfers will land on their sites and click their ads. Other times, domain squatters will buy common misspellings of popular websites with the same intentions. For example, back in 2007, a man owned weddingshoes.com for the sole purpose of displaying ads related to something that surely thousands of people search for every day. Many years later, this domain is still up for sale or rent.No matter how the domain is acquired, advertising revenue is a very common reason people squat on domains.

More Naming Tools To Come Up With Concepts

Stuck? Dont worry. This is a tricky process.

My recommendation: Listen to this podcast episode with Anthony Shore from Operative Word, a company that specializes in naming things.

Hes named the on-demand fitness system Tonal and Virgin Voyages . He uses a variety of tools, too, which Ill list here:

OneLook.com This is like a thesaurus juiced up with killer capabilities and wildcarding options. Say you want a name that starts with Bl and ends with rd, and its seven letters long you can literally search for that.

RhymeZone Pretty self explanatory. Bet you didnt know that Quick Sprout rhymes with six out, big trout, this crowd, clear out, and sixth round. In addition to rhymes, you can also find synonyms and adjectives.

Sketch Engine This is very intense corpus linguistics database it uses a large body of real world language that it runs through a computer to organize and tag that language. Anthony sets his to all the news articles from 20142017. You can look up words that are used near or in relationship with other words. Basically, youre finding words that are already natural together. This makes your name more relatable, credible, and adoptable. He talks about it more on the How Brands Are Built podcast.

MRC Psycholinguistic Database He talks about this more in the podcast its a pretty advanced way to search for words with certain criteria. You can use it to find words that start or end a certain way for example.
