Godaddy Shared Hosting With Domain Registed At A Different Registrar

I’ve got a shared hosting account on GoDaddy, however my domain name is registered at a seperate company. Assuming I already know how to point my domain name to whatever I want, how do I set up GoDaddy to accept the whatever domain name I want, and how do I find the proper address for my GoDaddy hosting so that I can point my domain name to?

When you sign up for Godaddy shared hosting they usually send you and email afterwards with the server’s IP. Once you have the IP address go to the site that is hosting your domain name and change the Host Record within the DNS setting to reflect the new IP address. It will take an hour or an hour and a half based upon what the TTL is set to.

GoDaddy’s Change nameservers for my domains support article will tell you what nameservers to use based on where your domain is registered and who your hosting provider is.

Registering Nameservers For Your Godaddy Domain

Log in to your GoDaddy Account Manager. Next to the Domains area, click Launch. Choose the domain name you would like to use to register the custom DNS nameservers. Head to the Host Summary section and click Add. Enter the hostname you want to register in the Host Name field. If your domain is domain.com and you want ns1.domain.com as your nameserver, enter ns1 into Host Name.

The next field is labeled Host IP. GoDaddy wont let you register nameservers with a single IP so you must have two different IPs. In the two Host IP fields, enter those two namerserver IPs. If you are not sure what these are, contact your host. Once you are done, contact your host anyways to ensure that the ns1 and ns2 DNS Zone A Record entries were properly created on your host server.

It takes a few hours for the nameservers to take effect and propagate. .COM and .NET domains will take about 4-8 hours, while other TLDs could time up to two days.

Once you have created your custom DNS nameserver, you are now ready to set your DNS nameserver for your domain.

  • Click Web Hosting.

If youre looking to connect your GoDaddy domain to your website you will need two things: a domain, and a hosting account. The hosting account is where your website will live. GoDaddy is where you might buy your domain and youll need to point that to your server.

If you dont have a host yet? For a small to medium website, Id suggest BlueHost. For more complex web apps Id suggest you look into something like Heroku, Digital Ocean or AWS. If you get stuck at any point Id suggest you just email your hosting company, as they should be able to help with your specific website.
