How To Point A Domain Name To Your Website

Following my article on What Does It Mean toPark a Domain Name? Domain Name Parking Explained, I received a few queries from visitors on how they can associate their newly acquireddomain name with their website. The visitors haven’t actually designed any website yet, but they have already signed up with a web host andare ready to “transfer” their domain there. This article describes how you canpoint that new domain name to your website.

Enter The Name Servers Into Your Registrar’s Settings For Your Domain

Once you have the list of name servers, go to your domain nameregistrar and log into their system. You will obviously need the login name and password that you created when you first registered your domain.

Once logged in, you will need to look for some option to either set your domain’s name servers or change them. Every registrar has adifferent way of doing this, and there is no standard method, so it’s not possible for me to give you a detailed blow-by-blow account ofhow to get to the appropriate screen. What I’ll do instead is give you some idea of what to look for.

In general, try the following to get to the page on your registrar’s site that lets you modify the name servers:

Once you manage to find the correct page to change your name servers, you will probably see a form that lets you enter thingslike your “Primary Name Server”, “Secondary Name Server”, “Tertiary Name Server” and maybe even more . The exact words used may not be the same, but it should mean basically your first name server, second name server, andso on.

Point Name Servers To Hosting Account

Web hosts have name server associated with them. When you want to use a domain on a web host, you need to take the web hosts name servers and give them to your domains registrar. This will route the domain to the web host, thus allowing the web host to host the domain. Without the name servers, the web host will be unable to host the domain, thus making it impossible for the domain and its website to be accessible via the internet.

Youll need to go to your domain registrar to change the name servers. Refer to your domain registrars instructions for changing the name server. If you used Pair Domains to register your domain names, you can look at their Changing Name Servers article for instructions.

It may take some time for the name servers changes to go through, so your site may not be available right away. However, once the changes do go through, your domain and its site will be able to go live.

How To Link Your Custom Domain To Our Server

After adding your domain, click on Check DNS status. A window will appear.

Under Create a CNAME record, you will find 2 fields: Name and Value.

Add the values of these fields to the DNS page on your domain management platform.

If youre adding a root domain, you can type in your domain in the first step and continue to the next step to obtain A record.

If you currently do not have any website hosted on your domain, we strongly suggest selecting the option to redirect your www traffic to the domain you are connecting. This will give you the option to add a CNAMErecord as well as an A record.

In short,if you want users to reach your website or landing page whether or not they type www in the address bar, we suggest you add both A and CNAME records to your DNS page.

Once the records have been correctly set up with their respective Name and Value fields, click Check DNS records.

Remember it may take up to 24 hours for your DNS settings to become active worldwide, depending on your hosting provider.

When To Add A Root Domain Or Subdomain

If your custom domain doesnt have a functioning website published on it, you can use the root domain for your landing page or website built in MailerLite. For example, my-domain.com.

If your custom domain already has a functioning website published on it, you can still add it, but you will have to add it with a subdomain because a root domain cannot be connected to more than one page. For example, subdomain.my-domain.com.

We use only use my-domain.com and subdomain.my-domain.com for example purposes only. You should not use them and use your own custom domain instead.

Note: A subdomain like www might override the content on your existing domain. We recommend using this type of subdomain only if you don’t have any websites currently on your root domain.

Find A Domain Name Registrar

The non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers oversees the entire system of domain names, and it allows outside companies, called domain registrars, to sell and manage domain names. You will need to register your domain name through a registrar.

Some of the most popular domain registrars include GoDaddy, Bluehost, and Domain.com, although there are many more to choose from. Be sure to carefully consider pricing and policies for each one before choosing your domain registrar, as it will be managing your domain name.

Manage Your Dns Records

When you click MANAGE DNS on the Domains page of your dashboard, youll see two DNS records and options to add many others.

Heres the full list of DNS record types that you can manage on 10Web dashboard:

How Does Dns Work Anyway

First, lets figure out what its all about.

DNS stands for Domain Name System.

When you enter a domain in your browsers address bar, the domain name system finds the nameservers that contain information about the requested website.

The browser then connects to one of those nameservers and looks up the domain to find the respective IP which looks something like 192.0.24.51. It sees a record connecting those two and reaches the server to access the website.

Simply put, DNS translates alphabetic/alphanumeric domains to numeric IP addresses.

When you make a change in DNS records, it will take time to work. This period is called propagation time and usually takes a couple of minutes but can sometimes last hours, 24 tops. The length of this process depends on the DNS provider and domain registrar.
