Should I Put A Dash In My Domain Name

How to Choose a GoDaddy Domain Name (& What to Do if Its Already Taken)

In normal, everyday written language, there are a lot of ways to separate words. A space, for one, but also all sorts of punctuationcommas, m-dashes, underscores, asterisks, apostrophes, dots, and more. But in a domain name, you really only have one option: -.

The hyphen, commonly known as a dash , is the only spacing character allowed in a domain name. That makes it the only option for when you want to register a domain name with two words in it and you dont want toor cantmash them together with no space between them.

But should you register a domain name with a dash in it?

What Characters Can Be Used When Registering Comau Domain Names

Domain names can contain up to 63 characters, enabling you to register domainsthat reflect your product names, campaigns, or slogans in most cases.

The valid characters for use in domains are:

  • Any letters of the alphabet example: abcdefg.com.au
  • Any numbers 0 to 9, example: 369.com.au
  • You can also use a hyphen , example: domain-registration.com.au
  • Domain names cannot begin or end with a hyphen
  • You can use a combination of numbers, letters and hyphens, example: open24-7.com.au
  • You can use multiple instances of hyphens, but not a double hyphen
  • Domain names can begin and end in a number, example: 9-5.com.au
  • Other forms of punctuation, symbols or accent characters cannot be used.
  • The name’s length must be between the range 3 and 63 characters

The easiest way to remember most of these rules for your future website address is to think “LDH” which stands for Letters, Digits, Hyphens.

Domain names are not case sensitive. This means you can advertise your web namein upper or lower case or a combination of both. For example domainregistration.com.au is the same name as both DomainRegistration.com.au andDOMAINREGISTRATION.COM.AU

Can You Trademark A Domain Name

If one cannot duplicate a phone number or street address, then why should one have the power to duplicate a domain name? Domain names, similar to words and symbols, can be used to identify a sellers products and distinguish them from the products of another, and are thus viewed as trademarks. The Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals recently ruled that a business must use its domain name to sell goods or services in order to protect the name even if a competitor starts to use the name after you registered the domain. In other words, merely reserving a domain name isnt enough. Thus, its important to register your domain name, because if your domain name has a trademark, the URL has protection under the USPTO.

An Introduction To Multilingual Web Addresses

Intended audience: content authors, Web project managers, and general users who want to get a basic overview, without getting bogged down in gory technical details, of what happens behind the scenes when they use non-ASCII characters in web addresses. This article addresses both IDN and IRIs, and how they work together.

is used to point to a resource on the Web such as a Web page. Recent developments enable you to add non-ASCII characters to Web addresses. This article provides a high level introduction to how this works. It is aimed at content authors and general users who want to understand the basics without too many gory technical details. For simplicity, we will use examples based on HTML and HTTP. We will also address how this works for both the domain name and the remaining path information in a web

Currently Web addresses are typically expressed using Uniform Resource Identifiers. The URI syntax defined in RFC 3986 STD 66 : Generic Syntax) essentially restricts Web addresses to a small number of characters: basically, just upper and lower case letters of the English alphabet, European numerals and a small number of symbols.

The original reason for this was to aid in transcription and usability, both in computer systems and in non-computer communications, to avoid clashes with characters used conventionally as delimiters around URIs, and to facilitate entry using those input facilities available to most Internet users.

The Trademark Act of 1946 prohibits uses of trademarks that are likely to cause confusion about the source of a product or service. 15 U.S.C. §§ 1114, 1125. Moreover, to establish a trademark infringement claim under the Lanham Act, a plaintiff must establish that defendants use of a mark is confusing similar to plaintiffs. Id. Example Of Idna Encoding

IDNA encoding may be illustrated using the example domain Bücher.example. This domain name has two labels, Bücher and example. The second label is pure ASCII, and is left unchanged. The first label is processed by Nameprep to give bücher, and then converted to Punycode to result in bcher-kva. It is then prefixed with xn-- to produce xn--bcher-kva. The resulting name suitable for use in DNS records and queries is therefore xn--bcher-kva.example.

How to Create an Email Address with Your GoDaddy Domain Name

Consumer confusion occurs when another company has a domain name close in spelling to your domain. The other companys name might different by one letter. Generally, consumer confusion matters only if a domain name thats similar to the one you want to use is a protected trademark. To be protected, a trademark must be distinctive. If the trademark owner has been able to register a name with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, it is probably distinctive. Can You Use Hyphen In A Domain

You can use a hyphen in a domain but not 2 consecutive hyphens in the third and fourth positions. For example, buy-company-name.com is acceptable but mynewcomputer.com is not a valid option.

Although hyphens are valid in a domain, it is strongly advised not to use them. People can easily type the version without the hyphens and you can lose traffic. If you decide to use it after all, just use one that connects 2 words.

I would like also to mention that a hyphen doesnt affect your performance on search engines . They evaluate websites based on content and other factors. A website with a hyphen can succeed if the content is good or there is a clever marketing approach.

Here are some examples of domains with hyphens.

Hosting A Domain Name With Compound Characters

The Plain

Stéphane Bortzmeyer

06/08/2020

In a previous article, we saw that it is perfectly possible to use compound characters in a domain name. Examples of this are réussir-en.fr, académie-française.fr, and many others. These names are handled like any other domain name and can be used, for instance, online in URLs or web addresses such as http://réforme-retraites.gouv.fr/. For the end user, they are just like other domain names and have no distinguishing features, unless the software is very old or contains bugs. However, for a technician configuring the software behind the hosting of these names, and the associated services, this is not always the case, and often they have to be handled differently.

This article is therefore intended for those technicians, for example, the system administrator of a HTTP server used to serve a website whose domain name contains these compound characters . It focuses on free software, like Apache or Nginx, since they are essentially the basis for Internet services infrastructure.

Can We Have Underscores In Url

Underscores can’t be used in domain names, as the underscore character isn’t permitted. Google’s web crawlers don’t like complex URLs that are filled with unnecessary characters. If you aren’t careful to encode special characters, the content management system that you’re using will encode your file names for you.

Idna 2008 Protocol Introduction

As a consequence of the implementation of the IDNA2008 standard protocol that supplemented the previously deployed IDNA2003 protocol, new characters were introduced to be supported when registering a .eu domain name while others were phased out.

This section aims to explain both the changes from the supported character perspective and the legacy policy for characters or sequences of characters that were phased out.

ß and

The IDNA2008 protocol supports both the German Sharp S and the Greek ending sigma on input as fully allowed characters. Due to the introduction of the homoglyph bundling mechanism, both characters are part of the homoglyph bundling algorithm, meaning that registered domain names containing characters ss or the Greek normal sigma prevent domain names with German Sharp S or Greek ending sigma from being registered.

However, considering the limited support of the German Sharp S and the Greek ending sigma by many web browsers, a registrant who has registered a domain name containing the characters ss or the Greek normal sigma , or vice versa – German Sharp S or Greek ending sigma – can request to register also the corresponding domain name at any time. The two names must be assigned to the same registrant. They will coexist and both will be invoiced to the registrar.

EURid regularly checks that the domain names are assigned to the same registrant and if not, revokes the domain name registered by the latter registrant.

The Question In Detail

There are various forms of the question. One version has the reader asking me whether he should geta domain name of the form “hereisamultiplewordedexample.com”or “here is a multiple worded example.com”. Others asked if a domain like”here.is.a.multiple.worded.example.com” might be superior to a name where all the wordsrun into each other.

For those wondering what a domain name is, it is just a name like “thesitewizard.com”. It forms the address of yourwebsite. You get one by registeringa name of your choice with a domain name registrar. This is usually the first step one takes whencreating a website.

Sleekcraft Factors Of Likelihood Of Confusion

Can I register domain names with hyphens, dots or spaces?

To evaluate the likelihood of confusion, including initial interest confusion, the Sleekcraft factors considered are:

the similarity of the marks

the relatedness or proximity of the two companies products or services

the strength of the registered mark

the marketing channels used

the degree of care likely to be exercised by the purchaser in selecting goods

the accused infringers intent in selecting its mark

evidence of actual confusion and

the likelihood of expansion in product lines.

Courts consider these factors within the totality of the circumstances through the eyes of the reasonably prudent consumer in the marketplace, not a person with a legally trained mind. Dreamwerks Production Group, Inc. v. SKG Studio, 142 F.3d 1127, 1129 .

In the context of website domain, courts have held that the three most important Sleekcraft factors in evaluating a likelihood of confusion are the similarity of the marks, the relatedness of the goods or services, and the parties simultaneous use of the Web as a marketing channel. Interstellar at 942.

No one factor is to be considered conclusive and the relative importance of each individual factor will be case-specific. CompareBrookfield, 174 F.3d at 1061 with Interstellar at 943 .

What Are Some Successfulexamples Of Long Domain Names

Some good examples are onlinevideoconverter.com, internetdownloadmanager.com, leagueoflegends.com, teacherspayteachers.com . These sites get a lot of traffic and have a big success even if their domains are considered as long. The characters are more than the ideal number but still, there are not more than 3 words and the domains are easily memorable.

Handling The Domain Name

Domain names are allocated and managed by domain name registration organizations spread around the world.

A standard approach to dealing with multilingual domain names was agreed by the IETF in March 2003. It is defined in RFCs 3490, 3491, 3492 and 3454, and is based on Unicode 3.2. One refers to this using the term Internationalized Domain Name

Internationalizing Domain Names In Applications

Internationalizing Domain Names in Applications is a mechanism defined in 2003 for handling internationalized domain names containing non-ASCII characters.

Although the Domain Name System supports non-ASCII characters, applications such as e-mail and web browsers restrict the characters which can be used as domain names for purposes such as a hostname. Strictly speaking, it is the network protocols these applications use that have restrictions on the characters which can be used in domain names, not the applications that have these limitations or the DNS itself. To retain backwards compatibility with the installed base, the IETF IDNA Working Group decided that internationalized domain names should be converted to a suitable ASCII-based form that could be handled by web browsers and other user applications. IDNA specifies how this conversion between names written in non-ASCII characters and their ASCII-based representation is performed.

An IDNA-enabled application is able to convert between the internationalized and ASCII representations of a domain name. It uses the ASCII form for DNS lookups but can present the internationalized form to users who presumably prefer to read and write domain names in non-ASCII scripts such as Arabic or Hiragana. Applications that do not support IDNA will not be able to handle domain names with non-ASCII characters, but will still be able to access such domains if given the ASCII equivalent.
