Web Site Evaluation: Domain Suffixes

Prior to the early 1980s, in order to visit a host on a network, the user would be required to type in an IP address, which is a numerical string of code consisting of digits and periods. Computers on this early network were able to communicate and locate one another using these numerical Internet Protocol Addresses.

Since, at the time, there were not many computers on the internet, this system was manageable. With that said, it was still not easy nor efficient because you needed a way to keep track of every single IP address in the network. If you did not have the IP address, there was no way to visit or communicate with the desired website. An early internet user could not query a site, or go surfing the web as we do today, rather you were restricted to the sites that you already knew how to locate.

Basically, it was equivalent to having a map of a foreign country, but that map only listed the directions to a handful of cities. This limited where you could go and made discovery outside of the context of the given directions impossible. Thankfully, computer scientists of the Internet Engineering Task Force gathered together and decided to simplify the system.

As Great Available Urls Become Rare Start

Before 2005, who’d ever heard of an “etsy?”

That’s all about to change. New rules from a group that oversees domain-name administration have opened up the domain-name playing field, and countries with appealing suffixes are licensing the rights to use their names in the United States. There are URLs such as Nest.io , Letter.ly , and Turntable.fm .

Specifically, the .co name, which hails from Colombia, is catching on with start-ups that think it can help them burnish their brands and stand out in Cybespace, where it’s often hard to be heard among the crowd of competing names.

“I wanted to keep the MyTab name, and I was not going to change my company name to accommodate ,” says Heddi Cundle, founder of MyTab.co, an online travel gift card site based in San Francisco, which changed to .co about two years ago.

Cundle says she spent months tracking down the person who owned the .com with her business’ name, and when she did, the owner wanted $100,000 for it. She told the owner that she was bootstrapping a business and would rather plow the money back into her business and focus on satisfying her customers. That plea fell on deaf ears, and several weeks after .co came out, she says she snatched up her company name with that suffix, for about $30.

Part of what Cundle and other start-ups like about .co is that is generally understood to mean “company,” and hence is unlikely to create confusion.

Need A Domain Suffix Here Are 30 Ideas Just For You

Before I explain what a domain suffix is and give you a list of my favorite ones, let me just acknowledge one sad thing Finding a good domain name for your online business or blog can be a tough task these days. It seems like every decent domain name has already been taken.

Just so you know. If, for example, youd like to put your hands on any three-character domain, you can forget it. If youd like to have a general dictionary word domain , you can forget it too. Unless, of course, you have $5M to spare.

Moreover, it doesnt get any better with various keyword-rich domains. If you happen to be a guitarist and want to share your experience with other likeminded people, guess what you can forget about learnguitar.com.

That being said, the situation is not that hopeless either. Thats because you can use a domain suffix and put it after your ideal phrase when you register a new domain.

I first created this list as a resource to help me whenever I need a shiny new domain. I hope youll find it equally valuable. Also, remember that choosing a domain name is an important decision and that you should research all the possibilities before you make the final choice. Alternative Domains Have A Stigma

There are a wide variety of alternative suffixes that you can use other than a standard .com address, but you may be risking your brands reputation by doing so. While internet users tend to trust TLDs such as .com, .net, and .edu, many others are viewed as suspect due to the actions of others in the past.

Some of these alternative domains have a natural stigma by default. Suffixes such as .xxx and .sex fall into this category. Others have earned a stigma because they have been used either for spam, malware distribution, or other illegal activities. A domain suffix such as .wtf, .pink, .online, or .room could be viewed as spammy regardless of how clever a domain name you hold.

    Why Does It Matter:

TLDs are important to understand both from a cybersecurity perspective and to know how constituents will engage with and access your web presence. Certain TLDs, namely “.mil,” “.gov,” and “.org,” are more reputable and have an inherently higher level of trust associated with them. One way election offices can ensure they are taking steps to ensure trust in their website is to register a “.gov” domain. The “.gov” domain suffix is restricted to verified U.S. government entities, which helps ensure legitimacy for visitors browsing U.S. government websites. Additionally, .gov domain owners are required to maintain a higher level of security and the federal government has implemented several cybersecurity controls in the underlying infrastructure, as compared to gTLDs, such as “.com” or “.net.”

Acquiring a “.gov” TLD and training constituents to expect to see a .gov on official websites can help combat potential cyber-attacks and misinformation. Due to the restrictions for registration, .gov domains cannot be typosquatted within the same TLD, leaving illegitimate website replicas to use a gTLD, such as “.com.” Additionally, as many users seek to access election office websites to obtain accurate information, “.gov” registrants can advise constituents that any website resembling their domain that does not end in “.gov” is illegitimate.

Google Loves A Com Domain Because Its The Oldest And Largest

The .com domain extension is by far the most used and valuable domain suffix. Put bluntly, Google is biased towards websites with a .com TLD.

Although businesses may wonder why .com is still afforded so much authority by Google. The answer is within human interaction with the search engine. Cognitive fluency favours a top level domain thats easy and familiar.

A website with the domain name yourbusiness.com is likely to be afforded more authority by Google than yourbusiness.co.uk or yourbusiness.business because users are more likely to type in yourbusiness.com than yourbusiness.co.uk or any other TDL for that matter.

Despite sharing its birthday with suffixes like .net and .org, .com has become the default domain extension, and therefore the most memorable. This, in essence, is why .com is the best domain extension for SEO.

As .com domains are the most powerful, they have become more popular. As with custom licence plates or the new fad food, this has led to an increase in competition for the best .com domains. Many .com domains are now only available at a premium price, or will already be taken, meaning finding your ideal .com domain can be difficult.

Which is what leads many businesses to seek their domain name with a less popular suffix. This might seem reasonable for branding purposes could be detrimental to your sites online visibility.

.org is the generic top-level-domain used by nonprofit organizations such as NGOs, educational, charities and other open-source projects. It was also established in 1985 to represent the organizations that didnt match the intent of other domain names: not an educational institute, not the government, not military, not commercial and not in networking. The restriction of .org exclusively for nonprofit organizations is removed in August 2019, so anyone can register .org domain for the purposes other than nonprofit.

    Dedicated Forest Root Domain

A dedicated forest root domain is a domain that is created specifically to function as the forest root. It does not contain any user accounts other than the service administrator accounts for the forest root domain. Also, it does not represent any geographical region in your domain structure. All other domains in the forest are children of the dedicated forest root domain.

Using a dedicated forest root provides the following advantages:

In a multiple-regional-domain environment in which a dedicated forest root is used, the replication of the forest root domain has minimal impact on the network infrastructure. This is because the forest root only hosts the service administrator accounts. The majority of the user accounts in the forest and other domain-specific data are stored in the regional domains.

One disadvantage to using a dedicated forest root domain is that it creates additional management overhead to support the additional domain.
