Is A Domain The Same As A Website

Don't Miss

What Is A Domain Name

Redirect Multiple Domains to the Same Website with cPanel and WHM

In the vast world of the internet, a domain name plants a stake in the ground for your business so your target audience can more easily find you. The domain is your address online, and the name that customers type in when they want to find your business. Its the Domain.com in the URL in the address bar at the top of this page.

Domain names were created as a stand-in for a websites Internet Protocol, or IP address, which is simply a unique series of numbers identifying the specific computer server where the website is hosted. Its much simpler to remember a name than a string of random numbers, and it looks much better on a t-shirt.

Where To Get A Domain Name & How Much It Costs

How and where you decide to get a domain name from will dictate the cost of your domain name. You can register a domain in a couple of ways, from using a domain name registrar for around $9 to $15 per year , for free with a web hosting plan for around $3 to $5 per month , or for free through the best website builders .

Pro tip: Dont make the classic rookie mistake of buying a domain before getting web hosting. Most web hosting plans come with a free domain name. On top of that, it will also save you the headache of manually connecting your domain and web hosting.

Internal Dns Not Resolving External Website With Same Domain Name WordPress

The help desk software for IT. Free.

Track users’ IT needs, easily, and with only the features you need.

My internal domain is identical to the external domain and . The website is hosted outside with GoDaddy. External user can access the website with or without typing no problem. But internal users must type www.mydomain.com. I would like internal users to be able to access the website by typing mydomain.com.

We have internal DNS server that is Authoritative. there is an “A” record for www.mydomain.com pointing to web server which allows users to type www.mydomain.com. Users however cannot access it by typing mydomain.com.

Here are a couple of emails I have received regarding this issue.

“Site is till going to mydomain.com not www.mydomain.com

Also when I do a DNS lookup for www.mydomain.com it points to xxx.xx8.47.225 but I cant go to the site via the IP address so I still cant get it to from our network at here”

I offered a redirect solution and the response email was:

“Redirect it to where? My local DNS will redirect it toobut what IP? There is no direct IP to the websitethats the whole issue”

We are using WordPress for our website and have been told that because WordPress automatically redirects that could be an issue.

So here are my questions after reading and doing exhaustive research on split zones and flushing numerous times.

Potential workarounds from the Dev side….

Would totally appreciate any help on this……

This path is otherwise known as going with a hosted website builder.

This path is common among website owners. Its convenient. Its simple and it makes a lot of sense for many website owners.

Publishing Your Finished Site

Domain Name And Website Are The Same

Now that you have the basics under your belt, lets discuss how a website goes live online. Whenever you surf the Internet, web browsers send file requests between special servers, known as Domain Name Systems .

While its easier for humans to read words, computers communicate with numbers. DNS servers translate domains into numerical identifiers, or IP addresses. This complex exchange helps a server validate a site and URL, and it takes place in seconds.

DNS servers have unique IP addresses. Thats why its important to point your domain name to the correct DNS servers to publish your site. Simply put, its a way of telling other servers where your site lives online. You can use the same domain name even if you move to a different web hosting platform.

Your web host platform may take care of this final step when the provider also hosts your domain name. If youre working with two separate providers, your website host will tell you which IP addresses to target.

What Is Domain Hosting

Domain vs. Website: Whats the Difference?

Domain hosting is a service that provides domain names for websites. A domain hosting service sells domains and registers them to an owner in exchange for a yearly subscription fee. Different types of domains have different prices, from as low as around 10$ reaching up to the $1000s. Depending on how common or uncommon the domain is.

A domain is set up like this www.YOURWEBSITENAME.com. It has different sections separated with dots. What a domain does is direct visitors to a specific website, much like the address of a house. Every domain has a matching IP address that sets its location on the internet. Of course, its much easier to remember and share a domain name than an IP address.

Domains are categorized into levels. The most common are top-level, generic top-level, and second-level. All web hosting providers that also offer domain hosting all have top-level domains, some generic top-level domains, and some second-level domains. The usual domain names are .com, .net, .org, .edu, .edu

There are also specialized domain hosting providers that offer all sorts of second-level domains, and generic top-level domains like .photo or .media.

Domain names and web hosting are two different things however, theyre closely connected. You need both a domain name and a web hosting account to create a website. This means that you cant build a website without any one of them.

To get started, you can choose a domain name and register it with a domain registrar company. With most domain companies, you can register a domain name for a minimum period of 1 year. You need to renew your domain before expiring to continue using it.

Next, you can buy a hosting plan and link it with your domain name. After that, you can install a website software , install tools and plugins, and add content to your website.

Be Careful What You Choose

There are a couple of warnings to heed before you register a new domain name. One is that the initial cost can be considerably cheaper than the renewal charge, so be sure to check that.

The other issue relates to domain reputation. Some TLDs are notorious for the spam emails that originate from them. In other words, bad actors tend to abuse certain types. The current culprits on the badness index are .MEN, .TK, .FIT, .DATE, .GQ, .WORK, .WANG, .GA, AND .ML.

What

A domain name is simply a name like “thesitewizard.com”. You pay adomain name registrar an annual feefor the right to use that name. A website is, on the other hand,a set of documents placed on a computer that is permanently connected to the Internet. When you associate a domain name, like thesitewizard.com, with that set of documents, others can view them by simply using a web browser to go to that domain. For example, when you connect to thesitewizard.com using your browser, you end up on this website, and you can read articles that Imake available here for others to read, like the one you’re currently looking at.

You can do a lot of things when you buy adomain name of your own. For example, if you own a domain like “google.com” , you can make “gmail.google.com” point to a different website from “www.google.com”. These names,”gmail.google.com” and “www.google.com”, are just subdomains of the main “google.com”. That is,once you own the main domain, like google.com, you can add any number of subdomains you want, and have them pointto different websites. Alternatively, you can also have them point to the same website if that’swhat you prefer. For example, both thesitewizard.com and www.thesitewizard.com point to the same website.

Do I Need A Domain For A Website

The answer is yes. A domain gives your website a unique and searchable address, making it accessible to internet users. Without a domain, your visitors would have to look for the IP address at which your website is hosted. Since an IP address consists of a string of numbers and characters, this can make it hard for your visitors to remember.Remember that choosing a simple yet memorable domain name can help create a professional first impression.

What Is A Url

Why Not The Same Domain Registrar As Web Host

The address bar at the top of a web page, commonly called a URL, is the universal resource locator. This includes all of the information your computer needs to find the right page, image, or document on a website. Your domain name is included in the URL, but a domain is not the same thing as a URL. Simply put, a URL is the whole string of characters, creating a map that leads your computer where you want to go online.

The example above is a URL, a computer would start reading the letters .COM, also called a top-level domain . Then, it would move left to include the domain name, Domain.com to find the right website. Once it locates the servers where the website is hosted, it checks the characters after the TLD, in this case, the /domains/ in order to locate the right web page to display.

The https:// stands for Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol. A protocol is a command that tells your computer to read the following information as hypertext, which is a structured language that uses logical links, called hyperlinks, between different nodes on the web page that contain text.
