Find A Domain Name For Your Business

How to Renew Your Domain Name

Choosing a domain name can be a tricky task. Several hundred million domain names are already reserved, and used worldwide â so you need to consider whether the domain name you choose is available, and how relevant it is to your project. If the domain you want already has a domain owner, you will need to find an alternative internet domain so that your web users can find you. Otherwise, you can find out about domain ownership details via a domain Whois search, then get in touch with the current owner to check whether you can buy a domain name off them. You can find more details on this below, in the âdomain name marketâ section below. Generally, a generic domain name with competitive keywords will already be reserved, or it may only be available on the secondary market â further information on this is also available below. For this reason, when you register your brand, it is important to ensure that your trade name or company name is available to reserve as a domain name. It is usually the easiest name to assign to your web address, and one that your visitors will easily remember. Keep in mind that your domain name should be short, and easy to understand â it must be memorable for visitors and customers. You can reserve several domain names and subdomains to suit your web-presence, and redirect to the server your website is hosted on.

    Heed The Warning Signs

You shouldnt be surprised when your lights go out if you havent paid your electric bill. An expired website shouldnt be a surprise either — your expiration date appears in the information you receive when you register a domain name. Record that information in a secure location. You can also visit a website that searches a WHOIS database that contains information about every site that exists on the Internet. When someone registers a new domain name, details about that name go into the WHOIS database. Websites such as Who.is and Register.com contain search boxes that enable you to enter your domain name, query the WHOIS database and view data about that name, including its expiration date.

Was The Domain Name Originally Registered Before 2000

Having personally practiced search engine optimization and building websites since the mid 1990s, I have to say that domain names that were originally registered before 2000 have aged. Theyve been around for a while, tend to be more trusted by the search engines nowadays , and would have some value to someone who is going to put content on it. If its had a website on it, there is a good chance that it has even more value.

Register, Transfer and Renew your Domain Name from leading ...

It is all too easy to overlook the fact that a domain name registration is a temporary thing. Even though at the time, the domain name is yours, and could be for years, there is still a chance for that domain to pass out of your control. There are a variety of ways this might occur:

    • Renewal reminder notices: If you have switched off renewal reminder notices, you could be setting yourself up for disaster. While auto emails and notifications can clutter your inbox, they can also be lifesaving. Even if you manually switched off renewal reminders , Domain.com will begin sending reminders by email to your listed email address approximately 30 days from the domain expiration date. We guarantee you will receive at least two reminders before the expiration date and one within five days after expiration. So, pay attention to your inbox, or alter your settings to flag the words, expiration, or renewal, to ensure you dont miss these important reminders.
    • Auto-renew is not enabled: By going by your account information and switching your domain name to auto-renew, you save yourself from possibly forgetting. When auto-renew is in use, it will automatically renew your domain name prior to the expiration date, generally a day before expiration. This feature will continue to run and auto-renew unless changes are made or if there are issues with your billing information.

So What Happens If I Miss The Deadline

So, your domain names renewal date came and went, and it wasnt set to auto renew. The first thing that happens is that your website disappears! A domain name is an address: remove the address and browsers cannot find your site any more. If you had a domain name email address, you would equally lose access to your inbox and all your emails.

Whats worse, unless you manage to get your domain name back, youve also lost all the traffic and reputation your website had built up over the years. For a business, its a total nightmare situation.

The next stage depends on your registrar, as each tend to have different rules. Typically though, they will grant a grace period of around a month, during which time it should still be possible for you to renew the domain name at the standard fee. Theres no guarantee though: sometimes theres no grace period at all.

Pay attention to email headers from the company that issued your domain name. One of those may be a reminder to renew your domain name. Go Daddy, for instance, sends multiple warning emails to customers. Many registrars also provide customers the option to sign up for automatic renewal. Look into that option if you prefer not to renew manually. Renewing manually often requires nothing more than logging in to your account at the registrars site and using an automated renewal tool. If your domain name does expire, you may have a limited amount of time to reclaim it. Review your registrars documentation to learn how it handles expired domain names.
