How To Rename Or Change Network Name In Windows 10

Every connection in Windows 10 has its own network name. Generally, Windows 10 assigns generic names like Network 1, Network 2, etc., to all your network connections. If you have a router, then Windows might use the name you assigned in the router. When using multiple networks, the default names can be a bit hard to remember or recognize one network from the other. In those situations, changing the network name is quite helpful.

However, you will not find any option whatsoever in the Settings app or Control Panel to change the network name. You have to use the Local Security Policy or Windows Registry to change the network name in Windows 10. It is quite easy to do. Let me show you how to rename a network in Windows 10.

Which One Do I Want

This is highly dependent on what you are trying to do. The original poster of this question was looking for the computer’s “Active Directory domain”, which probably means they are looking for the domain to which either the computer’s security principal or a user’s security principal belongs. Generally you want these when you are trying to talk to Active Directory in some way. Note that the current user principal and the current computer principal are not necessarily in the same domain.

Pieter van Ginkel’s answer is actually giving you the local network stack’s primary DNS suffix . In the 99% case, this is probably the same as the domain to which both the computer’s security principal and the currently authenticated user’s principal belong – but not necessarily. Generally this is what you want when you are trying to talk to devices on the LAN, regardless of whether or not the devices are anything to do with Active Directory. For many applications, this will still be a “good enough” answer for talking to Active Directory.

    Structure Of The Fqdn

If you want to better understand the naming hierarchy of the FQDN, then it makes sense to look at the structure of an FQDN from right to left. The further right a label is located, the higher it lies in the tree diagram representation of the hierarchy. On the highest hierarchical level youll find the root label, also called the null label, or the root of the DNS system. It consists of a blank area, and so is only expressed by a period, or dot. In browsers today, its not necessary to enter this dot anymore, since the browser will add it itself.

On the next highest hierarchy level is the top level domain, for example .com, .org, or .ca. To resolve the address, the name server searches through the directory of the given TLD for the domain on the next hierarchy level. Once this is identified, the host whose host name is listed in the lowest label is contacted to access the given site.

Look Up The Fqdn In Windows

In Windows, you can find the FQDN of your computer under the label Full computer name. To identify this in Windows 10, simply enter the term Control panel in the Windows search bar. Click on System and security and then on System. In the second to last section of this page, youll find the full computer name of your device, which consists of the specified computer name and the domain. If the computer isnt connected with a domain, then only the local host name will be displayed. In Windows 7, you can access this display by right-clicking on Computer in the start menu and then selecting Properties.

You can also display the FQDN over the command line in Windows. To do this, enter the following line and press enter:

    echo %COMPUTERNAME%.%USERDNSDOMAIN%

This will then display your FQDN. If your computer isnt connected with a domain, then only the unmodified variable %USERDNSDOMAIN% will be displayed after the computer name.

Change Network Name In Windows 10 Via Registry Editor

Warning: before making any changes to the registry, please create a quick registry backup so that you can restore the registry as and when needed.

If you are using Windows 10 Home version, you need to use the Windows Registry to change the network name in Windows 10. Thankfully, it is quite easy to change the network name using Windows Registry.

    1. To open the Windows Registry, press Win, type regedit in the blank field and press Enter on your keyboard.

    2. In the registry editor, go to the following location. Windows 10 users can simply copy and paste the below path in the registry editors address bar and then press Enter to go to the target key.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles

    3. Under the Profiles folder, you will see a few more folders with random alphanumerics. Each folder represents a network connection in your system. When you select a folder under the Profiles folder, you will see the network name on the right panel next to ProfileName. In my case, the network name Im looking for is Network 2 and that is represented in the second folder under the Profiles folder.

    4. Now, double-click on the ProfileName value on the right panel.

    5. Enter the new name in the Value Data field and click on the Ok button.

    6. Once that is done, close the registry editor by clicking on the X icon appearing on the top-right corner.

As you can see it is not that hard to rename a network in Windows 10.

How To Find Your Computer Name In Windows

Article by James Swackhammer updated March 18, 2020

    Article

Did you know that your computer has a name? If you were unaware of this detail, now is the time to give your computer the virtual hand shake and introduce yourself. Every computer that deals with a network has a name and an IP address. In this post Ill show you how to find your computer / pc name in Windows.

    Find computer name

Computer names are easy identifiers, whereas giving randomized characters can be difficult to remember. Take your car license plate for an example, it could be some arbitrary like YH2D-P9N. I wont remember that but, having an office computer and a home work station named James-Work and James-Home is much easier to remember.

The computer name is also known as the HOSTNAME in terms of SOLIDWORKS Licensing. Your IT, or software tech like a Javelin Tech, may ask you for your computer name to ensure they have the correct computer.

So how do you find your computer name in Windows? Follow these steps for Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10.

    Joining Or Leaving A Domain

If your computer is part of a domain, joining or leaving the domain wont generally be your job. If your computer needs to be on a domain, it will already be on a domain when its handed to you. Youll usually need the domain administrators permission to leave a domain, so people who sit down to use a domain-joined PC cant just leave the domain. However, you can leave a domain if you have local administrator access on your PC. You wont have administrator access if youre using a locked-down PC, of course.

If you have an old computer thats joined to a domain and you no longer have access to the domain, you can always gain access to the PC by reinstalling Windows. The domain settings are tied to your installed operating system, and reinstalling Windows will give you a fresh system. You shouldnt do this to a work or school PC you dont own, of course!

Domains limit what you can do on your PC. When your computer is part of a domain, the domain controller is in charge of what you can do. This is why theyre used on large corporate and educational networks they provide a way for the institution that provides the computers to lock them down and centrally administer them.

Thats the core concept, although much more can be done with domains. For example, group policy can be used to remotely install software on computers joined to a domain.
