How To Check If Domain Nameservers Are Pointed Correctly

How To Find My Domain Name | How To Search A Domain

In this article, youll learn how to check the nameservers of your domain and whether theyre correctly pointing to your hosting service to prevent DNS issues. You can use either WHOIS lookup tools or your system console to check whether or not your domains nameservers are properly applied and pointing to the right server.

What To Do If Your Domain Name Expires

In case your domain name expires, you should contact the registrar that provided your domain name registration services for possible renewal options available to you. To determine your current registrar, conduct a WHOIS search by visiting whois.icann.org, as we already explained in the post.

Note: Keep all your important business information permanently recorded somewhere safe. That includes your registrar name, login username, password, and domain management somewhere with your most important business papers. Ensure that all your information is properly added when registering your domain name.

Do I Have To Use These

Setting your domains name servers are basically just letting your domain Registrar know where to send DNS requests for your domain to. So technically it is not required that you use our public name servers in order to have your domain name hosted with us.

If you already have access to directly modify your DNS records for your domain, you can simply modify your DNS records so they directly point to the IP address of the server youre using with us.

So in our case from the earlier example with InMotionHosting.com we saw the IP address we were getting back from our public name servers was 199.250.205.41.

If we update the NS records for InMotionHosting.com to use ns1/2.MyCustomDomain.com instead of our public name servers. As long as we still have an A DNS record pointing to 199.250.205.41 on those name servers as well, the website would still be pulled from the same physical web server.

DNS is a naming system that maps a servers domain name, like example.com, to an IP address, like 203.0.113.1. This is what allows you to direct a domain name to the web server hosting that domains content, for example.

To set up a domain name, you need to purchase a domain name from a domain name registrar and then set up DNS records for it. Registrars are organizations that have completed an accreditation process that allows them to sell domain names. Registrars typically offer services to manage DNS records as well, but once you have purchases a domain, most registrars will allow you to manage your DNS records with other providers.

DigitalOcean is not a domain name registrar, but you can manage your DNS records from the DigitalOcean Control Panel. This can make record management easier because DigitalOcean DNS integrates with Droplets and Load Balancers.

Dns Records Vs Name Servers

DNS records and name servers work in tandem, but are two different things: DNS stands for domain name system, and DNS records hold the information about which IP addresses match which domains. A name server is a library, and DNS records are the catalog.

The process for updating your DNS records is different for each web host. That said, most leading domain registrars and web hosting providers have resources to guide you through the process. Its usually no more complicated than copying and pasting the name server address into the right field.

Are Dns And Nameserver The Same

The DNS stands for Domain Name System or Domain Naming System, Domain Name Service depending upon whom you talk to. It is a global system that translates the IP addresses to human-readable domain names.

On the other hand, a nameserver is used to locate the DNS server. A nameserver is the address of the DNS server that hosts the records for that domain.
