    Creating A Free Custom Subdomain

How to add a custom domain to your Minecraft server!

We have a video tutorial for creating a subdomain for your Minecraft server:

In order for a player to join your Minecraft server, they need to have your server address to enter on their Minecraft client.

By default, a server address looks something like this: 192.168.2.1:25611 but that can be confusing. You want something that can easily be read and recalled. To do that, you can customize your server address by using a domain or subdomain . However, using a domain requires that you purchase one from registrars like Namecheap, GoDaddy, etc. and this might be something that isn’t in your budget.

We got you covered! Here at Shockbyte, we provide a free service to let you create a subdomain of your choice with several domains to choose from so that you no longer have any difficulty remembering and sharing your server IP to others.

Before we make our subdomain, we first need to identify your server IP and port. You can find this on your Multicraft server panel labeled as Server Address.

For this example, the server address is 192.168.2.1:25611.

Let’s get started on how to make our custom subdomain by following the steps below:

  • Navigate to the Subdomain Creator page:
  • That’s it! You now have your very own custom subdomain for free! Please allow a few minutes and up to 24 hours for your subdomain to work.

If you have your own domain, you can check out our other tutorials on how to create a custom IP for your server:

    Creating The Dns Records

Once you have found the DNS for the domain you want to use, these steps will walk you through the record creating process. These steps assume you are already at the Custom resource records section of the DNS settings.

  • Make sure that the dropdown box is set to A
  • Confirm that the record got added in the list below the entry boxes.
  • Change the dropdown option above the list to be SRV
  • In the text box with the @, you will want to put _minecraft._tcp.If you made the A record with a subdomain, you will want to put the subdomain immediately following the _tcp. Example: If you have your A record set to be play.example.com the @ box for the SRV record would need to be _minecraft._tcp.play
  • In the box labelled Service parameters you will want to put the following in it: 10 5Note: Stay in this text box for the next couple steps as we will be adding more information into it.
  • Get the port of your Minecraft server, this is the number following the colon in the number IP address. Example: If your port is 12345, then you add that to the SRV record to make the second box: 10 5 12345.
  • Get your full domain for how people will be connecting to the server, if you did not use a subdomain it will just be something similar to example.com. If you used a subdomain in your A record, you will need to use something similar to play.example.com
  • Option #: Custom Domain

  • On your domain’s Advanced DNS page, click on the Add New Record button to create an A Record with the following values:

    Host:@

  • Port: Your Minecraft server port e.g. 25463Target: Your domain e.g. shockbyte.comTTL: Automatic
  • Click the Save All Changes button to save the new records you’ve created.
  • If you’ve entered the correct entries, you can now use your custom domain to connect to your server. Once saved, your domain should normally be ready to use. However, if it doesn’t work immediately, allow up to 24 hours for the changes to take effect.

    Which Is Best For You

    • Custom Domain – This allows you to use the domain itself as your server address. This option is best if you do not have a domain yet.
    • Custom Subdomain – If you already own a domain but you cannot use this as your server IP, you may instead use a custom subdomain . A subdomain as a server IP is ideal to use if the main domain is pointing to your server’s website.
    • Free Subdomain – Since most domains require for you to pay for its registration, you may opt for a free alternative using subdomain creators. This allows you to use a subdomain as your server IP without having to pay for the domain itself. You can create one for your server using Shockbyte’s Subdomain Creator.

If you choose to use a custom domain or subdomain, you will need to create an A and SRV record through your domain registrar’s DNS manager.

If you do not have a domain yet, you can register one from a reputable domain registrar. A few notable registrars are Namecheap, GoDaddy, and .

Once your domain is ready, please refer to our tutorials below depending on your specific domain registrar or DNS manager:

    How To Create A Subdomain

Nearly all domain registrars have the same configurations when it comes to setting up your domain/subdomain. As they are all very similar, we will cover how you can set it with GoDaddy.

    Configuring/adding your subdomain

  • On this page, you will see a section labeled All your products and services. Under this, look for Domains.
  • Under Domains, you are going to see a listing of all the domains you have on your account. To the right of the domain, click on DNS. On this page, you are going to see a section named Records. There are two records we will be adding, the A Record and the SRV Record.
  • A Record

  • In the records section, click ADD and choose A from the dropdown.
  • You are going to see a few required values that will have to be filled out.
  • Host: Defines the subdomain, e.x play in play.mydomain.comPoints to: Defines the IP address the A record should resolve to. This will be your Minecraft Servers IP address.TTL: Defines the average time it takes for the changes to propagate.

  • You will want to first set Host to the subdomain you want. For example, if you put in Play for the Host, it will set it as play.yourdomain.com.
  • Next is Points to. You will want to set this to your server IP address .
  • After you set that, set the TTL to ½ hour. This will define the average time it takes for the changes to the domain records to propagate.
  • Here is an example of the end result:

    SRV Record

  • In the records section, click ADD and choose SRV from the dropdown.

Make A Minecraft Server On A Linux Host

If youre not inclined to host a Minecraft server at home, you can spin up a Linux hosting plan to do it instead. This way youre not responsible for managing any of the hardware, plus youre not exposing your private home network to the public.

As mentioned before, a Linux VPS hosting plan from GoDaddy is a lightweight option if youre experimenting or not expecting a lot of players to join your server. If, however, youre expecting a lot of players, you should look at using a dedicated Linux server instead.

To follow these steps, youll need to connect to your hosting with SSH.

What If You Dont Want To Host Your Server At Home

Hosting any kind of server from home means youre exposing your home network to the world.

If youd rather not take that risk, then you can use a hosting provider instead. Youll need to pay a monthly or annual fee, but you wont have to deal with the hassle of managing the server hardware.

A GoDaddy Virtual Private Server is a good fit if youre just getting started. Just keep in mind that youre sharing hardware with other users, so keep an eye on resource usage.

If you need a little more oomph and you want to hook up a lot of players, you might try a dedicated server instead.
